HSBC User Experience Trash

How on earth in this day and age does a global bank such as HSBC get away with an abysmal UX, either website or app. It’s so difficult to navigate, self service etc.

Am I the only one who feels this way? CBA is light years ahead. So sad that I made the switch, if only cba had better mortgage rates.

From someone who moved all banking from CBA to HSBC about 3 years ago; you’re not wrong.

CBA’s tech stack is exceptional and probably unmatched in Australia - so imho you’re comparing to one of the best. HSBC’s is mediocre in comparison, but it isn’t that bad once you get used to it.

I kinda hate everything about hsbc except the rate :)

So complex and an unnecessarily ugly website.

Their user interface is not good I agree but I don't agree they are abysmal.

Their navigation needs some time to get used to but every service you are looking for are there in the similar way of CBA.

You want home loan, they offer $3,288. CBA doesn't. You want accrued interest recorded daily, HSBC got it. I don't know about CBA but BoM doesn't have that feature.

You want to transfer money instantly, they have just implemented SCT although banks transfer coming INTO HSBC aren't immediate other than certain banks such as NAB. For example, Westpac to HSBC transfer isn't instant.

You want ATM, you can withdraw money at big 4 with no fees.

Yes it doesn't have PayID. Something they said they are working on.

Their homeloan rate was cheaper than mine at BoM and certainly at CBA.

The only thing they don't have is extensive branch network but CBAs are closing branches here and there.

I continue to believe people stick with CBA because it used to be Govt owned / Dollarmite and no other reason other than apathy. When people are being asked about what's "exceptional" or "unmatched", what are they referring to? Are they able bypass Responsible Lending rules (which I continue to think they are stupid at 3rd world country grade) to approve Credit Card? If so, I would be interested.

I have the exact same question. Sure, NetBank looks good, but its functionality is limited beyond common banking transactions - ie cannot add a TFN to a company bank acccount, nor close accounts, without calling CBA. Then you get the exceptional experience of waiting 1 hour in CBA's abysmal telephone queues. Is this really exceptional?

As far as tech goes, I think Up and Macquarie leave CBA for dead. Macquarie does however lack proper Osko support, which leaves a very few number of payments not being received instantaneously.

One feature that I miss when I left CBA was the ability for the app to send notifications for every credit or debit card transaction.

I liked it because it removed the need for me to routinely and manually check my transactions for fraud or misuse.

          • @mboy: Both Macquarie and Up have this feature. Even NAB does too.

  • Yep HSBC is a pos. I moved away.

Kind of got used to all the crap, that many companies do now that a UI/UX issue, is the least of the concerns.
I'm from a 3D/graphics background, so those things stick out like a sore thumb.

Being on OzBargain long enough that, I learnt to just "use" them, like they use us.

Only give 6 month discount, fine, I'll change company/provider just before it expires.
Doesn't have PayID, I'll join another which has it. Do my spending there instead.
Charge international transaction fee, join one which doesn't.
Similar to others, if the home loans weren't good, will just change to others.

It is a pain to manage multiple accounts, and changing few times a year, but its the day and age we live in.

I know this is a bit off topic but can I just remind also they offer Premier accounts (free Credit Card / Children Accounts / preferential Exchange / status parity with overseas HSBCs - allowing opening of HSBC account overseas / concierge service) which are easier to obtain in my opinion than others. Their HSBC Star Alliance is very good at least for the first year where it gives you the Gold perks of airlines (express checkin / express immigration / lounge / extra luggage / priority boarding / free seat selections on some airlines /etc).

They are not perfect by all means but they are bearable imho. It's better this way tbh because HSBC is leaving NZ and we sorely need competition in the banking industry with the big 4 cartels happening.

Yep have complained to them a few times over the last 2 years. We're moving away from them when my fixed term is up in a month, i've given them two years to get their act together and they haven't.

Such simple things like being able to lock/unlock cards, manage card features like online purchases, and just to support PayID. How hard is it?!?!

I agree with you completely - I can't actually use their website on my desktop PC as it seems to fail at the security checkin/has to be reloaded a few times before it lets me login properly.

Can't wait to move away from them.

Wait till you try to close an account in-branch. It took over half an hour, and I was the only customer in the branch.
    It shouldn't be that hard.
