Alfa Giulia - Any Owners on Here?

I'm wondering if there's anyone on here who owns one?

I'm looking at the standard model, just the 2L turbo.

I really like the look of the cars, and they're really affordable on the used market.

Maintenance issues are interesting, there's mixed information on forums.

Any feedback on costs of running the car would be appreciated.

Thanks

and they're really affordable on the used market.

    There's your answer

    • That's a generalisation.

      • That's wishful thinking

      • The used car market is the best source of information. Money talks.
If the used car price is substantially down from its new price (relative to its age), then in general, they either break down a lot, or otherwise if they do break down they cost a lot to repair (either hard to work on, or specialist tools or knowledge is required which the average mechanic would prefer not to do - but will do the job if the pay is exorbitant).
By the sound of it, you have already decided to buy it, so do not want to hear objections.
Looking for the good old confirmation bias.
In saying that, if you can pick it up cheap enough, then sure, go for it. Just drive it till it stops (or if you like DIY then anything can be good).

No, it's basic common sense. What vehicles are cheap?

        Nissan dualis/pulsar with cvt
        Holden Cruze/Captiva/Trax/astra etc
Mid to late 2000s Audi A4
        BMW 318i
        118tsi vws
        Alfa romeos

What do these all have in common? Propensity to have expensive failures, and overall high maintenance cost and low reliability.

  • What are the potential costs if you get, say, 20% of all the issues you have read about on these forums?

    Still affordable?

really affordable on the used market. (ie. cheap)

Maintenance issues are interesting, there's mixed information on forums. (ie. unreliable)

You just need add 'buy one sight unseen privately without a professional inspection' and you'll be yet another to accomplish the OzBargain Holy Trinity of Crap Used Euro Car purchasing.

  • They do seem like great value second hand. You can get a 2019 Stelvio Q for around 85k, which is very tempting.

Not sure I'd call that great value. If you want an $85k SUV with ridiculous amounts of power and ugly interior you can buy a new Model Y for less than that. That at least won't come with a repair bill for a twin turbo ferrari engine any time soon, and will be a lot more comfortable when you're stuck in traffic.

Granted, it is a nice looking car and I suspect the pricing isn't due to anything being wrong with the car, just a lack of people going through a midlife crisis and wanting a budget ferrari with space to carry groceries.

      • It’s a stunning suv, interior is not bad. Yes, you need luck on your side otherwise could be a bad purchase

  • I've been tempted by these too. If you love the car and it's at the right price just go for it, find a good independent mechanic, DIY what you can and enjoy.

  • https://redriven.com/cheat-sheets/alfa-romeo-giulietta/ explains why you should not buy one.

    Run away!

Edit: This was for the Giulietta - sorry!

My Father owned a bunch of Alfa's going back 30yrs+ and they're always the same. Truly stunning styling inside and out, great performance for the $$$ but maintenance costs will be above average & can be disasterous if you get a bad one.

    • Are you my brother? Lol
Same here. Father and older brother has had a few Alfas since the 80s. My dad still has a 156.

  • More pertinent question..how many have one in the garage and when was the last time it was on the road.

  • Alfa Giulia - Any Owners on Here?

None that would admit to it.

Any feedback on costs of running the car would be appreciated.

You only buy an Alfa if you can do your own work and are prepared to pay high prices for parts.

  • Our 2003 147 is a brilliant car, but Mazdas of the same year have aged better.
