Value signalling … comes at a cost! 🤯

      • +13

Is there a difference between value signaling and buying products from a company that genuinely tries to make a difference in the world?

        • +18

People who make comments about value/virtue signalling are the kind of people who are happy not to try and affect any positive change to the lives of others. They use it as a slur towards people who make more effort than they do.

          • +2

            @eraser215: What an ironic statement.

          • @eraser215: Not true, you can do the 'right' thing without the need to broadcast the fact to strangers

        • -2

If by chance they were boycotted for what ever value signalling they did, watch this company backpeddle. It's all about the money at the end of the day. They don't give a crap about what they are signalling about.

          • +5

@Sammyboy: Didn't the founder transfer 98% of the company to a nonprofit, essentially meaning the profits from the company are going directly to a nonprofit..

            • @tommynolips: lol….tax dodge!

              • +2

@franco cozzo: the not for profit profits go to charity …. they guy was rich and decided he had more then enough. some people get into philanthropy, like bill gates , some don’t.

              • +3

@franco cozzo: If it's a tax dodge, then any money they're saving on taxes will be spent on environmental conservation, fighting climate change etc.

While an act like this is exceptionally rare these days, it's true in the case of Patagonia. Look it up if you're skeptical.

              • +1

@franco cozzo: Lmao I love how people throw this around as if it's an explanation. When really it makes no bloody sense to attribute people's philanthropy completely to a tax deduction.

You get to tax deduct your donations. Which is great, except that you're only getting back the marginal tax you would have paid on the income you've deducted from. So let's say your marginal tax rate is 45%, you've still given up 55c from every dollar you donate. You can't donate your money and end up ahead.

            • @tommynolips: He had a taxation issue which was resolved by him divesting his family of the sharehoding in Patagonia IIRC

          • +2

@Sammyboy: Sorry dude, but check what others have said.

As of last year, Patagonia's profits are funneled into a 'non-profit' which uses the money on environmental conservation, fighting climate change etc.

Patagonia is one of the few mutli-national companies you can feel good about buying from, if that's something you care about.

  • +13

100% polyester. Wouldn’t even pay $30 for that.

  • +1

Toms Outdoors have it for $159 pickup

I agree with comments above as well; not a fan of recycled polyester.

Tom's also has more sizes and more colours
