Home Security Cameras (Battery, Outdoors, Wi-Fi)

Hi everyone

Looking at home security cameras for the house. I need at least 3 cameras

I already have a ring doorbell if it makes a difference.

I am wanting a system where the cameras connect to the wifi first (I have mesh wifi) and then connect to the base (see below issue with Arlo that connects to the base). Even better if there isn’t a base.

I don’t mind if the data is stored on the base or cloud.

Battery operated is fine, as I don’t want to hard wire. Might get some of those solar attachments.

I originally looked at Arlo, but my friend had mentioned his system is rubbish. The cameras connect to the home base first and then the base to wifi. His house isn’t large, and the cameras don’t get a strong signal to the base , even though the base is quite central. He refuses to buy a new base considering some of the cameras are 5 meters away (through a paper thin wall)

We have a Eufy system, which was easy to install and use.

I might be mistaken but wasn't Eufy the brand that allowed any of their customer's footage to be viewed from an un-secure web portal by anyone?

    • Do the cameras connect to the base first? Or connect to the wifi?
I am worried if the base is not close to the cameras

      • No idea.
If memory serves me, I believe we connected the base to our router (via ethernet cable), then had to pair each camera with the base station.
I don't remember having to connect each camera to wifi, so am assuming each camera connects directly to the base station.
The base station is right next to our router, and centrally located in our house. Camera's are front and back, but haven't had any issue with them connecting/disconnecting.
The base station has a battery backup, so if power goes down I believe we still have cameras. As such I would assume cameras are not on wifi (direct to base station).

TL;DW: read the video description for the recommendations.

  • I switched from Arlo to Eufy and found that the signal strength from the Eufy back to it's Homebase is better (but your mate with 5 meters issue sounds extreme, I didn't have that issue).

We have a large-ish house and the Homebase is situated centrally. The two cameras I have at the furthest opposite ends (driveway and backyard) are both 3/4 signal strength.

    • Which eufy model do you have?

      • I have the 2 Pro with homebase 2.

  • I have five Arlo cameras. If you're paying retail I think they're too expensive. But in terms of operation my setup works fine and I don't pay any monthly fees. Arlos use less power connected to base that on wi-fi. If starting from scratch I'd go Wyze Battery Cam Pro new product, not yet sold directly into our market.

Remember cameras designed for battery spend most of their time not recording to reduce energy consumption, they only "turn on" when they detect movement & record a clip. This process of turning on & recording can significantly delay any alerts the cameras send out, I have seen minutes long delays or even no send at all from some battery/solar cameras. Some models will also start their recording seconds after the movement is detected, leaving you with a clip of an empty frame in the wrong circumstances. It also wont record when the movement threshold isn't tripped.

Cameras designed to be wired in are usually far better in this regard.

    • The wireless battery cameras are basically like a sensor light that records when triggered by motion.

Eufy cameras have let me down multiple times by recording only part of the event or failing to record anything at all.
Also, there is too much delay with the notifications sent to my mobile phone.

  • I have 4 google cameras. They are continuously recording and plugged in. If you are in Melbourne, the battery cameras won't work long in the winter.

I didn't want to have the recorder inside the house. Also went with the big G assuming that they will pay a bit more attention to security than a smaller one like eufy.

If you already have a ring doorbell, you could look at the ring cameras.

  • I bought the solar powered Eufy :)

I had 2 for back yard.working fine and good price. You can consider.

  • Highly recommend Reolink over Eufy and Arlo. Better value for your money and excellent performance.

  • I have the Eufy Security Floodlight 2K installed by the electrician. It has limitations but overall is great.
I also have eufy doorbell and security cameras installed. The system itself works fine.
Better have the devices under the same system so it's easier to monitor :)
If you already have the ring doorbell, you can consider ring security cameras. My only concern with Ring is the ongoing subscription costs so I end up using Eufy.

  • I have 3 ring cameras and they’re great
