How is synthetic sapphire vs mineral crystal? Are they the same thing named differently?

    • +3

      Different things.

Mineral crystal is cheaper, and scratches more easily.

Sapphire is second on the Mohs scale only to diamond, so it is much more difficult to scratch. And, of course, is more expensive.

Mineral crystal is however more shatterproof that sapphire, so is more able to take knocks that might smash a sapphire glass, which is why you often find it on divers.

Moissanite beats sapphire on Moh's scale, for the sake of completeness. But everything you said here is correct for watches. I do think that mineral crystal, specifically Hardlex, does get a bad rap moreso than it deserves. Although I do dislike Seiko pumping out >$1000 watches in the Prospex line with mineral crystal when sapphire would cost them tens of dollars extra to include.

      • So when manufacturer says synthetic sapphire or just sapphire, they meant the same thing?

  • Looks like a normal watch. What makes it a pilot watch? I don't see any UTC or any other functions.

    • You'll need some kush

    • Large, easy to read numbers

    • +2

What makes it a pilot watch?

Just the face. Flieger Type B. Some examples.

Nice one. My forever fav in Pilot's is the IWC

"Dive watch" and "pilot's watch" speaks more to historical design cues than modern practical use.

Virtually no divers or pilots use these watches to dive or fly, today.
