Recommendations for a Petrol Road Scooter

Howdy OzB

I'm in the market for a scooter, fell in love with the convenience after riding throughout Phuket recently (I used to give scooters a bit of stick).

I have my full riders licence and years of road riding experience.. however I have zero idea on what to look for in a scooter, brand, model, minimum CC etc

I'm 100kgs, will often have a pillion.. rides will normally be quite short, maximum 20 mins with most streets not being more than 70kmh. Thinking 2nd hand, I don't want to be too precious about the bike, maybe a budget of $6,000?

Any recommendations or guidance is appreciated

    Ducati Panigale V4

    • Haha, thanks. Something i wont be precious about though. If I got a Duc it would be a street fighter

If you want a good Duc just for riding to work and back, get a 400cc Scrambler. You will get one for around that $6k budget.

Having owned a shitcati, I'd rather walk which I had to do more often than not.

          • -1

@pharkurnell: Having owned about 20 of them, I beg to differ :)

I will say though, from about the late 90's and older, yep, they can be a handful. But their modern bikes are very solid… If you dont mind the service and parts pricing.

            • +2

@pegaxs: 22 warranty issues in 18mths… worse pile of shit out of all the bikes I've owned… Frasers had it for longer than I did.

Worse thing was the boss at the shop warned me what they were like… Should have taken his offer at the time on the VFR in the crate.

              • @pharkurnell: Which model?

              • -1

@pharkurnell: Wow… that sounds like my Triumph T595. I owned it for about 12 months and of that, it spent 8 months in the shop. Warranty issues were for everything. Cracked frame, porous sump and block, fuel tank leaks… the list was endless

At one point, it was so bad that they flew two guys out from the UK to see what the fudge was wrong with it. They couldn’t understand why my bike was so bad.

Traded it in on a Ducati and never looked back. Never bought another Triumph.

  • Need post for best life insurance policies next

Maybe we should do a post to educate drivers to be motorcycle aware too? Think of how much we would save insurance companies.

  • Without a doubt this is the scooter I'd buy

    Italjet Dragster 200 Malossi Edition

    https://www.bikesales.com.au/editorial/details/italjet-drags…

  • You may live slightly longer on a 3-wheeler but not sure if there are any used ones about

  • +1

Yamaha Xmax (300cc) if you can stretch the budget abit higher
Decent lil scooter (actually a pretty chunky thing)

    Or its smaller brother -

Yamaha Nmax (155cc) brand new probably around 6k and can carry two people pretty well and easily sit on 70kmph (although it’s working harder at higher speeds)

  • +1

What about electric? If your max ride is 20min surely an electric scooter would cover that easily. Will also have more torque off the line than a petrol one.

    • -1

The only decent EV scooters in this segment would be the BMW CE04, and at $20k+ for a used one, out of the budget. Another would be the Fonz Arthur 3+… but again, it's out of the budget for a new one, maybe a used one? Super Soco CPx… but again, out of the budget. Maybe used?? even then, hard to find… Then there is Horwin. They have one that will do the speed OP needs, but I am not sure on range, but again, price becomes a factor. Lastly, Benzina Sport. Only new to the market, so there would be no used ones, and new ones are still almost $8k…

I own the Fonz Arthur 2+, and it is good for what I do, 8km round trips to work and up to 80km/h if i need it to, but for 20 mins each way and 70km/h sections, OP would have to get the next model up.

I am waiting to see what Zeeho bring out to Australia. Zeeho is the electric arm of CFMoto. Kymco are also said to be releasing some electric scooters later this year or ealy next year…

      • Cheers. I didn’t have any idea of cost etc not being in that market at all.

  • +2

Kymco Like 150R… All the coolness looks of a Vespa, without the eye watering, butthole puckering prices… Kymco are basically the Kia of Motorcycles.

Does it have to be a scooter? Would a motorcycle work just as well? You can get on a brand new CFMoto 300NK or CLX300 for $5.5k, if you went used, you can find them around $3500 to $4500 for a 12 month old bike with less than 3000km on them. CFMoto are in bed with KTM, so you are basically buying a KTM, with without the dry stick in the poop chute prices. (I own a 300NK and a CLX700)

    • +1

Wanted a scooter for its lower centre of gravity, seat heights for both rider and pillion and under seat storage. But the CFMoto look good and would suit the mrs who's looking at getting her licence. Thanks for the recommendations!

    • Kymco all the way! They are brilliant engine manufacturers.

  • I have been looking at kymco, and want something with CVT

    • Is a 125 powerful enough to be comfortable if carrying 150kgs?

      • +5

Not really. If you are going to be carrying that kind of weight all the time, I would be looking at 200cc+ scooters. 150cc is the sweet spot for basic transport. 200 if you are transport and carrying weight. 300+ if you are doing motorways/highways/etc.

      • you will be full throttle and struggle to keep up with anything but stop/go traffic

2 up on a 400cc is a breeze, can do a bit of touring too, the yamaha tmax will take pretty much anything you throw at it

  • Suzuki Address or Honda Dio.

  • Recommendations for a Petrol Road Scooter

    These are good…

  • Im up to my fourth scooter, a Suzuki Address (110cc, air cooled, injected).

The 110 size scoots will be fine for you, but as you've often for a pillion - look for something 150cc up (and water cooled). My pick would be a Honda PCX or Yamaha Nmax.

  • Honda Integra. 670cc, 6sp dual clutch auto with manual override and city/cruise ranges. Handle like a dream. Can get 2nd hand for around $5K.
    I had one.

  • Thanks all for the tips. Slim picking of 300cc Yamaha's or Kymco around Sydney with low Kz and good condition, just need to keep looking for the right thing, or may have to get a 200cc and be fine with slow ascent.. can't really break speed records in the local street's anyway.

  • I had a Vespa GTS250e - I think they're 300cc now. But basically there are what they call the large body Vespas and the small body Vespas. Get the large body one.

  • +1

I have a Yamaha NMAX but I would've gotten the Honda PCX if it had been available at the time. Something about ABS laws changing for motorcycles and the PCX still had a rear drum brake. The NMAX is good but Yamaha and my Yamaha dealer haven't been good.

    • So, you prefer a drum over a disk?

      • +1

I don't prefer drum brakes, I just wanted to buy from Honda and not Yamaha. So I wish that Honda had updated their PCX to have rear disc brakes.

If you do consider an NMAX and plan on storing your helmet under the seat, make sure it actually fits beforehand. I wear a size L and a standard full size helmet doesn't fit in there. Oh and the scooter to phone bluetooth connectivity om the NMAX is a gimmick that you'll never use, just pretend it doesn't exist.

Sorry for the long reply, I do like the NMAX overall but I definitely know what I don't like about it.
