Is Anyone with a Bank That They Don't Want to Headbutt?

Hi All,

I've had some extremely painful situations with the Bank of Melbourne and NAB recently.
A combination of low staffing and primitive processes has resulted in me wanting to move to another bank.

Every time I have entered a bank in the last 12 months there have been lines out the door, minimal staff members, and all customers are frustrated as all hell.

My ideal list of requirements in a bank are as follows:
- Should have physical branches OR ability to withdraw bulk cash from time to time.
- Ideally not have to wait more than 30 minutes, and when I get to the front of the line I can actually get help (had an experience where I waited 30 mins and was told the person that could help was on lunch for another 45 mins - this was for a request to update details because they wouldn't allow it online..)
- No monthly fees, none of this 'deposit X and we'll spare you from paying us a fee' crap.
- Don't care about interest.
- Don't care about international transaction fees, i'll use UBank for these transactions.
- Ideally not want to headbutt them.

I'm happy to sacrifice some of these for improved service..

Does this bank exist? Am I too greedy?
Feel free to share your trauma.

No thanks. AusPost and government services are worse to deal with than any bank, with the possible exception of ANZ.

I want a bank that allows you to have a password of any length and content and proper 2FA that is NOT SMS and decent savings rate. As good as impossible.. Not good enough.

A recent overseas trip with sms 2fa on a vredit card was a real pain in the arse, and unfortunately not avoidable

Yep, as you found that's problematic, but mainly SMS 2FA is weak and exploitable. It frustrates me that as any company that actually cares about security is moving away from this, Aussie banks and others praise themselves implementing it in 2023. As I said, not good enough.

If you need to go INTO a branch, either your bank is shit or you're doing banking wrong.

  • I was going to suggest Bank of Melbourne is best because I have never had to line up, always fast and friendly service and free lollies too but now I’m genuinely shocked to see that it is the Bank of Melbourne you are complaining about.
Completely opposite experience to mine— I always have to wait in mile long lines at Commonwealth Bank- they even have the cheek to ask people to come back in an hours time on Fridays when they close early!!!! Unbelievable. NAB seems to have long lines too.
I avoid Commbank branches like the plague now by banking with them through Post Offices which are a sanity saver.

  • You have to look around your local area to see which branches have no lines. Despite branch closures everywhere there's a St George close to my work that never has a line, I only use it to deposit cash.

  • HSBC is fine for me, I've never had to go to a branch but they are around. They are always almost empty. No fees.

Been with UP bank since beginning. No regrets and amazing.

  • CBA is #1

  • I'm a massive fan of Up and their app. They're primarily digital but it looks like it suits your requirements, you can actually do your in-person banking (with them or anyone else) at the post office.

  • Why do you have a need to visit the branch? I don't think I've needed the branch for anything bank related because you can do 99% of things online.

  • I'm sure you are a valued customer lmao
