Your opinion on YouTube blocking home page, saying "Your watch history is off"

Hey what is people's opinion on
YouTube blocking homepage feed, for users who have their watch history off

Is it like Google putting more privacy measures now that google is unable to give recommendations without having watch history on ? - I personally highly doubt that because it shows relevant videos in any video page (just not homepage). It used to be able to give feeds on homepage easily a week before or so without that watch history enabled also.

Or is it Google just trying to get more data desperately and thus doing dodgy practices to get data now ? - If you think so then kindly give your opinions are comments below.

This only comes users that have watch history disabled (only started like a week or so ago)

Thanks

  • Why is your watch history off? That's very suspicious. I hope ASIO is keeping a close eye on you.

Once a data is breached its gone forever,
Rather have that option disabled than to be leaked with other data like optus data breach.
And who knows what google/youtube is going to do with that data (like sell somewhere share with someone to make money etc).
Rather have it disabled than regret them mishandling data

Additionally YouTube has no issue in showing content in Home page with No user signed in (but problem only when signed in, tested with Incognito on)

    They're all trash recommendations anyway.

Just go to your subs and watch from there.

So to clarify, you've disabled your watch history - and aren't happy that they've turned off features that (they say) rely on it?

I see it this way. Google are giving you the option to stop tracking, because they have to under the privacy laws in some jurisdictions… but they don't like it, and will actively encourage you to turn it back on.

Unfortunately this is the power that big tech companies have. If you don't agree with their practices and choose to not participate in some of the fundamental ways they monetise/pay for the service, then the only choice you have is to stop using their product.

Well, if you want content related to you, enable it? I don't see the harm YouTube recommending videos based on your watch history.

Google has way more data on you just by signing up to an account.

I have an Android phone, google home devices, TV's with Google TV, google has enough info about me already. So what if they have a suggestion filled front page?

    • where does it stop? this is just them conditioning YOU to think it's ok to keep giving them more and more and more

I like it this way. Stops me from watching random video and scrolling endlessly. Hope they do this with shorts.

I still have a feeling that they still keep the history behind the scene no matter what the setting is. They just flag it and not show it to you if it is off.

  • The blank screen is actually an improvement, like the original google search.

  • nooooo YouTube stopped blocking the home page. They also blocked shorts but reverted it not too long after
