$500 a Carat for Lab Grown? Idk Diamond pricing. Is that high or low?

    • First google result says 1 carat is $1200USD and I can't be bothered looking any further

    • +2

A bit more goes into the pricing

F means it is colourless, though the lowest grade of colourless - Faint color detectable by a trained gemologist

VS describes the clarity - in this case, some inclusions (though only slight)

Assuming excellent cut, Blue Nile is quoting $20k USD for a natural diamond, or $3650 USD for a lab grown diamond (both 2 carat).

      • Also, this company won’t sell the diamonds individually, so the cheapest ring is an additional $975 AUD

And this company might not be an excellent cut - in which case it should much cheaper than $4k

      • Those numbers are meaningless. How much will they buy them for?

Diamonds in my mind are a terrible investments anyway, if you were a true OzBargainer, you’d just get a cubic zirconia, if your fiancée complains, obviously isn’t a bargain hunter….

          • +2

@ozbking: I would argue moissanite, price vs longevity.

            CZ’s are crappy glass

            • +1

@Andoes: Given my wife now only keeps her diamond ring in storage, I don’t think moissanite or CZ really would matter…

I actually asked the diamond jeweller after I bought the diamond ring if she could create an identical copy made from CZ - she just ignored me…

              • @ozbking: If the ring is insured, would she wear it almost everyday?

                • @azngamer: The ring is insured… the concern is now actually scratching the children with the diamond

                  • @ozbking: Children are a horrible investment! a true ozbargainer would save the $100,000s it takes to raise them, imagine how much cz you could buy with that 😆

            • @Andoes: The hardness scale isnt linear and a diamond is still much more durable so for a platinum setting lab grown diamond, eveything else moissanite is way better than cz.

      • Are natural and lab grown diamonds distinguishable other than based on certificates? I would have thought crystalline carbon is crystalline carbon?

        • +1

Depends on your expertise. Natural diamonds can have fluorescence, lab grown ones generally don’t.

However, looking at it under the naked eye, you can’t tell the difference.

On the other hand, most lay people would struggle to tell the difference between diamonds and moissanite.

Diamonds were only made famous by de Beers in the 20th century.

          • @ozbking: Fluorescence indicates trace mineral impurities that are UV reactive. So it can be argued that it is an undesirable trait. That being said, fluorescence even in natural diamonds is on the rarer side. The reason that lab grown diamonds rarely fluoresce comes down to the fact the environment where they are made is much more controlled so there is a smaller chance of impurities.

            • @FuRyZ: I’m aware of this, but it’s one of the few qualities that really separate natural vs lab made.

Are natural and lab grown diamonds distinguishable other than based on certificates?

The natural diamond companies produced equipment that could tell the difference. Over time, the lab-grown diamonds got better and better, and the natural diamond companies made more and more expensive equipment to tell which was natural and which was lab-grown.

Now the best lab-grown ones can't be told from natural ones by their characteristics, so the natural diamond companies have given up. Now De Beers are "branding every diamond over 0.2 carats with the De Beers Marque and individual number".

          https://www.debeers.co.uk/en-gb/our-story.html

Sounds like an admission of defeat to me.

You can tell, in a way. If you see a really sparkly diamond and you don't think the owner is particularly rich, it's probably a lab-made diamond, or one of the diamond substitutes.

Diamonds shouldn't be as expensive as they are. How diamonds rose from being a "rubbish stone" to the most-desired stone, is taught in marketing courses, to show how marketing can make people believe something almost worthless is valuable.

        • Based on my observations, individuals wearing authentic gemstone jewelry often display increased confidence and a sense of calm. Conversely, I've noticed that people can sometimes appear slightly uneasy or anxious when their non-genuine jewelry receives attention.

As others have said, newer lab grown diamonds are indistinguishable these days. Diamond is diamond, regardless of how it was made.

I myself got my wife a lab grown diamond for her engagement ring. Mostly because I could source a much higher grade diamond with near perfect clarity and colour, at a more reasonable price. A natural diamond of that rating would be exceptionally rare and extortionately expensive.

I take more pride in the fact the diamond is near flawless than how it was made.

  • F is not good and who knows what inclusions are in these diamonds or the grade of cut, symmetry or polish. Blue nile diamonds are also pretty average. Have a friend who bought one and its average af
