I recently purchased this item from jbhifi for $999 not the all time low but no complaints. It’s an expensive vacuum and debatable if it’s worth it. For me though I have no regrets it’s absolutely amazing.

    • Purchased the V8 origin recently for $345 and no complaints as well

      • I got the original V8 as well! But I'm thinking about returning it and getting either this or the V12 slim detect! Read a couple of reviews and although the V8 is not bad, the new ones seem better. Factoring in the price difference I'm not sur if it's worth it though!

That’s a bit of a hard call if it’s worth upgrading from v8 to gen5 as it’s a big outlay and your v8 might still be perfectly fine. V8 to v12 I wouldn’t do as suction is only an extra 35 air watts and the bin is tiny. The v12 does have a lot more features but if your going to spend v12 money you may as well buy gen5… the only negative to gen5 is it is quite heavy at first but you will find that you adjust to the weight.

V12 would work well if you lived in a unit.

        • How do you return it after using it?

  • Purchased this a month ago and works great. Upgraded from a V6.

Dyson is overpriced and suction is no where comparable to wired vacuums. Remember that battery will have to be replaced every year and it’s very expensive. In fact for the price of battery you can get another decent brand of handheld vacuum.

spoken like every anti dyson person who has never even owned one.

      I have the V8, V10 and Gen5 Detect
The V8 was 5 years old when it finally required a battery replacement and that cost a grand total or $50 for an aftermarket one that has proven to be superior

The GENUINE batteries range from $120-$200.. so could you please provide a link to a "decent" brand of handheld vacuum that holds a candle to the Dysons performance within that price range..

      Thanks

      • If after market battery is superior than Dyson’s original battery, then that says a lot

        • Battery tech has progressed/increased since Dyson released their V8

The newer battery is higher capacity

      • $50 aftermarket superior in what way?

If it lasts anywhere near as long as a genuine I’ll eat my hat be incredibly surprised.

To start your post saying that Dyson are no where near comparable to wired vacuums is foolish and shows you have not used a Dyson for many years. Your post should have said Dyson offer similar suction to wired vacuums but at this power level the battery only lasts for 5-10 minutes. Using this level of power all the time will increase the number of charge cycles in a year and wear out the battery. The new models are auto power level and come with very effective heads.

This combination allows for very energy efficient cleaning and does not require the suction level of a wired vacuum. In saying that if you want wired vacuum power you can run it on boost mode all the time and buy a new battery when it dies outside of warranty period.

This! Handheld wireless vacs win on practically. Wired vacs wins on cleaning power and longevity. If you allergic to dust and wants proper clean go grab a miele for half the price. I tend to use my dyson ( now viomi) more than my miele just because wireless is so much more convenient.

        • Yea hand held vacuums make it hard to go back to corded ones. In saying that when I want to do a deep clean of my bedroom carpets running the gen 5 on boost sucks amazing levels of fine dust. Just need new battery tech to make so you can run it on boost for longer then 10 minutes lol.

  • I own a Dyson v10 and battery died within 20 months of very minimal use. Replacement battery is $149/-. When I asked Dyson’s customer service, they said they consider Batteries as consumables and we are expected to replace it as and when required. If you think that other brands vacuums don’t perform as Dyson’s then you’re mistaken. Have you even tried any other brand?

    • I revived my V6 with an eBay battery and a soft tool with gen5 like led. All up $80 very well worth the spent

We’ve had our v10 for more than 4 years now and it’s still going strong.

20months seem defective, you'd expect degradation but not outright not working at all. You probably could have fought for warranty regardless of customer support, they say those things to shoo you away from fighting for your rights.

    • Pretty much every youtube review with genuine tests has the dyson come out either on top or close to it..

Their one complaint is almost always about price.. Not performance

So Yes dyson are expensive.. I don't think anyone denies that. But they are proven over and over to perform

" Genuine Dyson replacement batteries for your vacuum

If your machine is less than 2 years old, it is likely that your vacuum cleaner battery replacement is covered by the guarantee. Please contact us to see how we can help. "

So if your only lasted 20 months its still under warranty

      • Yeah. This is odd. Batteries are considered consumables but definitely covered in AU under the Dyson guarantee. Defo get in touch again.

  • I bought this model recently, after 5yrs of Cinetic Big Ball Animal (and it is still going strong), and have been more than impressed.

The core reason: tired of the paint damage to walls, skirtings. I live in an apartment now, and as effective as the Big Ball and any corded vacuum cleaner has been, you ALWAYS have a cord and the body dragged around past every corner.

    :-)

    • I’m actually thinking of buying a used big ball Cinetic for the odd job where I need high levels of suction for more then 10 minutes. Is the big balls suction similar to the gen 5 on boost? I am finding the gen 5 crevice tool isn’t great for cars and it works better with a extension tube. Once you factor in the car cleaning kit that comes with awkward crevice tool extension tube and soft cleaning tool for $100 bucks you can buy a cinetic big ball used for another 50.

      • Short answer about the suction comparison: Yes.

We chose the Big Ball Cinetic Animal for the fittings - we have a dog, but has since moved out with my sister, but he occasionally 'holiday' visits me.

The Gen5 is big for a car cleaning job, so the Detailed Cleaning Kit with the stretchy Extension Hose makes it a lot easier get around/over/under in the car for sure, so just hanging out for someone/somewhere do a discount on the kit.

My holiday project: design and build my own stand for Gen5.. the 3rd-party steel ones bends and flex like the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Dyson ones..

        • Thanks for detailed response. I’ll keep an eye out for a sale on the kit.

The cinetic Dyson does interest me as it apparently does not need its main filter cleaned for at least 10 years. How true that is I don’t know. Sounds like a good vacuum to have if your doing project work and have fine material you need to vacuum up.

          • @Dave3296: I think the Big Ball had gone through several revisions, the location of the filter might be on the side with the latest models.

            • @beedee101: Thanks to my understanding the newer ones only have a hepa filter that’s deep in the machine. Can be replaced but not user friendly. They don’t have a pre motor filter. Funnily enough I didn’t realise they say not to vacuum fine material like flower. I assume the cinetic filtration can’t handle such fine material.

  • I just order another one for my family, you could ask for loyal customer discount for $20 on top of $999 + free shipping. They said $20 is the max on-sale product they were authorised to give. The price I got is $979 + free shipping.
