What Is The Best Bright/Zoomable/Rechargeable Torch?

Hi, I'm looking for a very good torch. I've looked at some comparison lists etc, but I don't see much in the way of zommable torches. This seems like a very handy function to me, to be able to change the width of the beam depending on what I'm doing. Is it a gimmick, or worth going for?
If it's a worthwhile function, which I'm leaning towards, then which torch would be best? I want rechargeable, and a good battery life, and super bright. A nice medium size that fits in the pocket too. Budget is probably under $100.
Thanks!

  • I guess I'd be willing to accept a torch that takes a few AA batteries, as I have a bunch of those, and a charger. But they aren't so good with camping, as easily lost, harder to charge etc.

  • What are you using it for? I would have thought for camping a head torch or lantern is more practical?

What do you think you need a adjustable/zoom function for?

    • Idk, just a general all purpose torch that will last me many years. just seems like an essential/useful tool that I wanna own. Camping is one thing, but it might also help for work when I do night shifts.

Wait until the torch fanatics discover your thread. They sit just below coffee fanatics in terms of taking things extremely seriously

    • haha yeah i got a machine and joined some coffee machine fb groups, and its crazy how specific and in depth they go about it all.

    • Yes, it will be 'Torch-er'

What are you going to use it for? Rummaging around at home? Camping/hiking? Caving? Helping navigate ships around in the dark (I have a friend who bought a torch for this).

    All require different considerations.

    • All of the above, hence zoomable would be nice. It'd make it more versatile wouldn't it?

The number of products that are well for all of those options listed is exactly zero. Think about it- that last category gives you a flashlight that's about the size of a jug of milk.

And no, zoomable is not useful in many situations beyond casually walking around at night. If you want flood and zoom, you get get a decently made torch that has two sets of LEDs and lenses.

Olight is always a good place to start. Good quality, big enough range.

One of the best of a handful of lights out there at the moment is the Olight Seeker 3 Pro.
It's on special now for $139 at Olight aust store. Bright with variable settings. Beam has good throw with good spill so you can see periphery well.
Only downside is you have to use their Olight batteries & charger. It's fits in a large pocket and has good heft. Brief 4200lumens is blinding.
Quality is up there and many reviewers like it, plenty of good Youtube reviews.

    Hope that helps.

    • Thanks, I've been considering Olight. Only other downside is it's not zoomable. I was hoping for something equivalent that also zooms.

Convoy Z1. Solid build quality, bright, zoomable, range of LEDs to choose from (B35AM if you want max CRI, SFT40 or Osram max throw, SST40 balance between everything). Uses a rechargeable 21700 battery but needs an external charger.

    • That could work, as I think I have a couple chargers for those batteries. Actually mine are for 2650. I wonder if they would work. I'll have to check out the loading mechanism

  • Your phone. Zoom just by walking closer to what you want to illuminate. Zooming out is just as easy, just step away from what you want to zoom out from.

    • lol phone lights are not good torches. more awkward to hold, and don't shine very far at all.

i used to have a rechargable eveready one with a detachable end which had the wall charger inside it
it even had a blackout setting where you could leave it plugged in on charge and if the power was cut it would light up so you could find it in the dark

  • Here's a budget one and it's USB-C
