Any recommendations for Portable Air Conditioner

With this summer looking to be a hot one, we are looking at buying a portable air conditioner - and looking for any recommendations. We are renting and landlord will not add one, we do have ceiling fans but there is always the odd day or two where it just feels like you are in an air fryer.

Thanks!

Sydney, I see, so fan is not enough.

But portables are not great. A window-mount aircon should work a lot better than a portable. Is that possible? I had one when i was renting.

    • Yep anything that I can take with me when I leave is fine with me!

      • There are vertical ones, which may be easier to install with sliding windows.
What are your windows like? Is security a big problem?

I'd recommend getting reverse cycle too.

    • I concur that portable aircons suck. I bought a fairly expensive one but it was useless - very loud and more like a cold air fan than an aircon as it wouldn't cool the room properly. I couldn't give the damn thing away and now sits gathering dust in the shed. A window mounted aircon will be 100 times better than a portable one.

Just wait until one of the 40 degree plus and put it on marketplace and you will get rid of it in no time.

  • so our place is a bit tricky. We have a combination of sliding windows for the bedrooms, living areas are the types of windows that slide up and down to open/close. If that makes sense.

    • Sash window? That makes it easy. Pull window up, put box aircon in window. You may need to cut a couple of timber pieces to support it on window sill.

Lower window to meet aircon. Install a simple window lock. Now you hopefully just have a small gap to side of aircon to fill, using commercial kit or a piece of plywood or plasterboard.

I was looking into this a few months back.
Do not get anything that has one host for intake/outflow - they will be shit.
    Two hoses are best.

You can get AC mounting/window kits on Amazon - this is to block of an open window except the hose that needs to feed out.

Cant be any more help :)

    Honeywell Portable Ac
I did some research back in 2019 while i was renovating
It a good balance of effiency, cost, coldness and quietness
Try to get them on facebook market winter time, while it cheap
    Really expensive during summer

  • Portables are mostly one hose & one hose portables suck. They pull cold air in & expel it through the hose to dump hot air outside. The negative pressure that results constantly pulls in new, warm air from outside the room. You end up spending big $ to cool air you immediately pump outside.

Get a second hand box aircon of FB marketplace. Put it in a sliding window, seal it with foam/plywood. They are loud but they work.
