Brands That Are Expensive but Crap

So special thanks to immrnonamehello for posting this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/794905?page=1#comment

it got me thinking what brands market themselves to be 'quality' or charge a 'premium' price but is a 'sub-par' quality product compared to its peers.

The obvious ones for me are 'certain' European [German] cars which charge a premium price but are not nessarily better quality then other then say their Japanese or Korean counter parts.

Gillette is another brand ive found to be 'expensive' RRP but not better then less known shaving brands

up market clothing brands also tend to be a bit over rated - Polo, Rahlp Laurne etc all charge a lot but ost of the ive found to be 'made in China' and not much better quality then id entry brands…..

After going through so many badges, they don't mean much anymore, but I understand why some people place a high value on having one.

    Gibson guitars.

They make god-tier pickups, but they don't seem to be able to reliably build a good instrument. $4.5 k guitars with worse fit and finish than a sub-$1000 guitar. I've gone through entire stores trying to find a Gibson without quality issue and failed.

    • Hilarious, I just commented the same thing. Sounds like you've worked in a shop. The biggest jokes of all are the Murphy Labs. 100% agree about the pickups too.

      • The Murphy labs do my head in. I toured the Memphis factory before it closed, so I know the sequence they build the instruments in. I can’t believe they aren’t discarding some of the instruments before the paint job.

  • Yeah I'm going to disagree on German car comment.
I currently have a French/Korean Renault koleos, had a Japanese Honda Civic and Toyota Camry, drove Ford's Holden's and Kia's.
And the BMW 2 series. It's a no comparison advantage.
Honestly I've had it for 3 years now and still by far the best car I've owned. I haven't paid a service since I have purchased it and has been all inclusive.

If that's only a 2 series I can imagine the pleasure of driving a 3 or above series.

The pleasure increases with the number.

      • Yep I can imagine. Tried the ix3 when servicing my 2 series and was a beautiful drive .
        I'd be happy with a 3 4 or 5 honestly
Beyond that and it's above my pay grade.

I've owned and tracked M2 M3 M5 M6 with the level of driving enjoyment also in that order, I'd say the bigger and heavier it gets the less fun it is to drive. Try going up in specs rather than size if you don't really need the extra space.

    Range Rover

Having worked at a LR dealership, I have no idea why people pony up an excessive amount of cash to buy them.

Their tech is rubbish compared to the germans. Their reliability is trash. The resale is horrendous.

They don't even drive that well.

@ people who complain about Samsung, it's true that their flagship products often come with a hefty price tag.
However, it's worth noting that their A series phones are available for under $500. Considering this price point, it's a challenge to find another reputable phone that offers comparable value.

Try Motorola - I've often surprised myself and family. I don't really understand why they're so overlooked at the low end.

        Love my Moto

  • BoConcept. Poor quality furniture that doesn't last. Absurd for the price. Live and learn.

  • Apple.

  • Daniel Wellington. It's a heap of junk for what they are charging.

  • Marcs clothing. I recently bought three items at the $150 - $180 retail range and they are useless after less than a handful of wears - split stitching in the pants, balls all over the jumpers. They are fit for the bin. Fast fashion at a premium price.

    That shit looks crap

  • This should have been 2 threads. It seems to be dominated by the "rip off" part and the "Sub par" quality component is overlooked.

If something costs $5 to make but is worth $100 to me - that's not a big issue IMO. That covers the vast majority of gripes in this thread.

If a company charges premium for lemons - then that's the bigger issue.

MVMT watches is a master class in marketing as their watches are such low quality.

  • German cars, maybe except Porsche, I got a soft spot for Porsche, though it’s way too expensive in Australia compared to the states or even Canada.

  • Dyson. Slick-looking plastic products that have mediocre performance and sky high prices.

Another thread today about air purifiers reminded me of this. Their 'air multiplier' idea fundamentally doesn't work with air purification because almost none of the air goes through the HEPA filter.

And even as fans, they are not that good. I've compared them to various Vornado-style "air mover" fans, and the air movers are better. For the same noise levels, the air movers are far more effective.
