Porting an IP Phone No to a Free Provider

Hi Ozbargain,

I have a PSTN no that was ported long time ago to an IP Phone Provider (pennytel->mynetfone) and been carrying that for many years with a provider with no ongoing services charges (except PAYG call charges). Recently the provider (Vonex owns mynetfone) has changed their free tier plan and now I am asked to pay monthly service fees though I don't use that service except sometime I need to use that. Checking to see if someone has faced the similar problem or know how to port this to a free provider and can keep my long time number?

If I don't have any option rather give up my long time IP no, but though of checking here if there is anyway to save the number. BTW - I used to use Zoiper as a Soft phone to use the IP Phone.

Many thanks

Cheapest option is probably Crazytel, at 35¢/month. More info can be found in the Telephony section of the Whirlpool forums.

    • Thanks @Colin2905 looks like there is a monthly fee of $1 to keep the number, porting is free though.

      • Ah, looks like the 35¢/month offer ended a couple of weeks ago. Sorry about that. $1/month still isn't too bad though.

  • If you're primarily retaining the number for incoming calls then the cheapest option is probably the PAYG plan offering from your own ISP. If you're ok with receiving all calls on your mobile you can just go with a 3rd party VSP such as Crazytel and make use of the CLI overstamping which most offer. That saves you the monthly cost of the number. One issue with ISP VoIP plans is that they tend to offer less features though coming from MyNetFone functionality will be similar except that many ISPs don't allow their VoIP service to be accessed from outside their own network and and some require that you use the router they supply. I'm informed that ABB now offer their VoIP plans including their $0/month PAYG stand alone plan which includes a number and allow their service to be accessed off net. If you have an ABN you might options from other ISPs. Another low cost provider is Siptalk, contact support and ask for the Whirlpool rate. You can also consider Australian Phone Company who also offer a $0/month plan without a number and their $3.95/month plan includes a number and local/national calls.

  • Sorry for the late reply. I signed up for the More NBN 100/20 for 3 months free and the reamining 9 months at $79.90.
