Lots of empty calories, er, joules.

You're just full of Hot Air

        • +2

blow it out your air fryer.

        • +3

          Air from there is taxable…

  • So do these things use oil, if not, aren't they just baking the food???

    • Maybe at chef school they're gonna start learning a new method of cooking; air frying!

I was keen on these when they first came out.
Compared to the Actifryer, they're almost the same. Just the shape of the chamber is quite different, so some things may cook better or worse as a result. But for chips - they're pretty much the same.

Whether or not they need oil: If you buy the frozen chips from the supermarket - they don't need extra oil (they are already coated). But if you're using freshly cut potatoes, you'll need to lightly coat them in oil.

      • Appreciate the helpful comments bolt_krank :-)

I Think this might be on sale to clear way for a new XL model of this Philips has just released, which has a much larger frying/carrying capacity than the current model which is admittedly small and can at best, for us anyway fry just enough chips to feed two hungry men. It does fry/air blast them damn well though!

is it recommended at this price?

    • does it still use oil ?

      • No oil needed if you buy supermarket fries.
But in my case I use Tefal Actifry.

        • Becuase they are frozen in oil anyway. Same as the Actifry doesnt require oil for them

        • +1

arghh u beat me to it! :D

      • i got the tefal activ fryer but it's the same concept. you dont need oil for the frozen food but it'll taste better if u add oil to it i reckon.

      • Even though it says oil free cooking, still, in my experience, always needed a small bit of oil when doing say chicken wings. Though things like frozen chips already drip with oil so none needs to be added hence the "oil free" label.

JV is very health Cautious. No oil in Indomee, no oil in his chips. You must be a fit dude~!!

        • lol

They give a "deep fried effect" with significantly less oil than a deep fryer - they recommend a teaspoon of oil per 1kg of chips.

      • +1

Are you thinking of buying one, jv? Or have you got nothing better to do with your life than comment on every deal?

Why would I want to take Philips air fryer off of him for $197? The poor guy just wants to cook his chips.

  • Do these things require a filter (hence change of filters)?

  • +2

I've got some friends who own this. They are very happy with it given the end result of the food is quite good and fast to cook the food too. One of them reckon is better than the Tefal one. The price is quite good. If you can arrange 100 people to buy direct from Philips, you will be able to get it down to $179 each including postage to one location.

    Philip J. Fry?

  • Doesnt a fan forced oven "air fry"????? why would you need to spend $200 for this?

    • +1

Doesnt a fan forced oven "air fry"????? why would you need to spend $200 for this?

because you don't have an oven?

    • Because, given the size, one of these would be a whole lot cheaper to use, rather than pre-heating your oven each time just for a snack of chips or whatnot?

    • They are quicker than many ovens and they also agitate and rotate the food allowing it cook more evenly than on an oven tray.

Tefal Actifry is also on special for $1 more at Harvey Norman, so take your pick if you think one is better than the other :-)

  • This is not some form of a microwave then? I thought I heard something once, and seeing as it heats up instantly it is a little sus. I'm probably completely wrong though!

  • Bought one of these things. Good for family upto 3 ppl.

    Really healthy and convenient.

  • Almost read it as Phillip J Fry

  • Has anyone used both this and a turbo oven (the rounded glass ones that sit on benchtops)? How does the end result compare to the turbo oven?

  • Whats a airfryer? by reading it, it sounds just like a convection oven?

  • just for you guys information

the last Philips modle is 9225 while this is 9220. they are almost the identical but 92250just has one more filter

    good deal though

Why are these glorified popcorn makers still so expensive is my question.

    • Because they are fryers not popcorn makers

      • +1

Yeh, i know but the concept is the same.. blast the food with hot air.
Dont get me wrong, I think they're a great idea, just overpriced in general.

        • +1

If you are aware of Dyson fan, you will know why some people would pay premium for the technology. Because not many people make them, it is still expensive.

        • +1

You could say its a niche market
