Tesla 3 Owners, Who Are You Insured with? How Much Do You Pay?

Tesla 3 owners Who are you insured with? How much are you paying?

I invite any suggestions or advice for best value insurer for 40s male full no claims , no accidents, never lost licence etc . I'm in NSW if that makes a difference.

My usual go to Budget Direct price beat by Coles or Woolies isn't that sweet.

    $1800 with NRMA in NSW

    • $1800

      per month :P

    $1400 with RACV in VIC

    • $950 Model Y with RACV, Regional VIC.
It was a bit of a cheat but works every time.

      • What is your cheat?

        • +6

Go RACV website and get an online quote. Increase the excess to the max to bring the premium down. Save the quote and get the quote number.
Go into an RACV store, provide the quote and request to purchase the insurance. Ask them to read through the details.

I have tried it on different cars and home insurances. The premium will remain the same and the excess is now reset to their minimum.

Pay and walk away with a happy smile. Use that savings to pay for the VicRoads EV BS.

          • @SuspiciouslySquishyG: Wouldn't they just give you the same amount as stated on the quote?

            • @SlartiBartFozz: When getting the quote online, increasing the excess reduces the premium.
However, when you go in store to pay, you pay the same premium according to your quote but for some reason the excess resets to the minimum.

              • @SuspiciouslySquishyG: Honestly, I would have kept that information for myself and close family members if I were you. I’m sure they’ll find out fix the bug when too many people know the loophole and use it.

          • @SuspiciouslySquishyG: Legend. No more EV tax btw.

$2100 NRMA (but i do more than 60k per year)

    • Does that mean your Tesla warranty lasts just over a year?

      • Yep

      • Not sure how they get around our ACL’s

        • They don't. The L in ACL stands for Law.

Having said that, there's nothing stopping them from trying to dodge their responsibilities under the law - it's up to the consumers to hold them to it and/or report them.

      • Don't they have 4 years or 160k? not just 60k.

    • How many kms on yours? Curious about battery degradation if you care to share.

      • +6

        Nearly 70,000. Degradation 3%.
Model 3 LR, I charge to 90% daily and drive it down to 50% every day.

    • Why does kms per year vary the price. I drive 50k kms per year and it makes no difference to my policy?

      • Because the more you drive the more chances you have to damage your car i guess. I am sure there are other contributing factors to the policy pricing though.

        • But my insurer doesn't even ask how far I drive per year.

          • +1

@Muzeeb: Oh fair enough. I just assumed mine was high for this reason. NRMA was the cheapest for me

          • @Muzeeb: Usually they ask you to estimate.

            • @Naigrabzo: I just did a mock online quote to payment stage with racv and was never asked about annual kms.

              • @Muzeeb: Fascinating. If I was the insurer, I would be asking. There is a difference in risk between car that runs 80k per year vs 5k per year. I know nothing about risk but can easily tell. :) RACV might be a compelling choice for peoplein VIC who do high kms!!

          • @Muzeeb: I thought all insurers ask this ? I recall having to change it when covid hit as our second car kms dropped <10K kms p.a

    • +1

Wow. Why so many kms? I've never seen a Tesla Taxi.

      • +2

There are a lot of Tesla Ubers going around

  • +1

$1,200, comprehensive, Qld with Suncorp. By far the cheapest option for insurance for me.

  • +1

Amazing! NRMA insurance is actually the cheapest for a model Y in NSW..that’s a first haha

Had to get such a high excess as if I left it at around $1k it was tough to find any policies for under $2k/yr

Annual Premium $2,561.87 for Garaged Inner West Sydney, upto 20K kms/year.

  • +2

    Allianz $1860/year, $1100 excess

EV owners, I'm kinda guessing what's happening in the UK re EV insurance costs isn't good news for us here in AU if we follow suit, e.g., the new government guidelines…

recommend EVs with damaged batteries should be "quarantined" from other vehicles due to the risk of battery fires (that) pose a risk of “thermal runaway”… creating temperatures of up to 400C.

    which means

Just two damaged electric cars can fit into the same space that would otherwise fit 100 petrol or diesel cars, under (current) guidelines.

    and on top of that

Claims for damaged electric cars cost insurers 25pc more than their petrol counterparts, the report found. Electric vehicles also take 14pc longer to repair.

Was the neg because you don't like me sharing what's happening in the UK, or because you disagree with the UK's new government guidelines for EVs? 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • AAMI
    $1386/year
    54 yr old M
    40xx postcode
    $1300 excess
    $76k agreed value
    15,000km/yr

Previously with BD. Went from $1100/yr to over $2800/yr on renewal.
