How does this compare to the Philips XXL? my Kmart one just broke, dont know if i want to wait for the XXL to go on special.

    • +1

I have used both of these. I would say they’re pretty much the same (i.e. this is much better value).

The vortex is slightly bigger and heats up faster. It’s also easier to use because it’s digital (could splurge for the digital Philips one but it’s $$$).

Only thing the Philips has against the vortex is that there is a “track” for the basket. The vortex fully comes out when you open. Maybe just personal preference but I prefer the track. No big deal though

      • -1

Vortex is 1700w whereas Philips is 2200w. I highly doubt the vortex heats up quicker.

        • +6

Not sure what to say. I've used both day to day for months/years and the Philips definitely takes longer to heat up. Maybe it was just that unit.

          • +2

@Thranrond: I have also used both and I feel the Vortex heats up quicker. The Philips takes ages but I do also prefer the track. The plastic door on mine warped though and now there's a gap between the sides of the drawer and the unit, so wasn't a fan of that. Also the Philips (I feel) also has a smaller useable basket.

            • @workhappens: Agree with everything. Mine is slightly misaligned too but we just push it into place

      • +1

Would you say it's big enough to fit a whole chicken?
The Philips XXL promo material shows it with a chicken inside, so if this is bigger I'm assuming so?

      • Purchased vortex, died after 3 days, probably just unlucky. Got Phillips. Happier. Ease of use and tray is good as you can put alfoil at the bottom even though they say bit to I can't figure out why not. If you can wait and afford Phillips go for it. However, if you are happy with the Kmart go back.

    • +1

The Instant is vastly cheaper, heats quicker and has a larger basket.

The Phillips is a more sophisticated design with inner and outer baskets and vents and stuff.

I love the touch menus on mine and hate the bubble buttons on the Phillips, hate them.

I own the instant and have used the Phillips.

      I prefer mine,

  • Damn this is big. Does it have shelves?

    • no

    • +1

I initially bought the smaller brother of the Vortex, now discontinued because I thought this one was too big. I loved it so much I bought the bigger one anyway.

I thought it would be huge but got it home and it is was quite compact, much. Smaller than a microwave.

Hope the Instant Vortex Slim Air Fryer comes on sale this is great model

Going from Kmart to this feels like a dream

How does this one compare against the Ninja Air Fryers?

  • I bought the recent Ninja https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/792179 deal and my only regret is not buying one sooner. Air fryers are amazing. I use it every day.

    • Too cool what? I’m struggling to find healthy stuff to cook, it’s all pre-made crisp coated junk?

      • I make potato chips for the kids in ours.
Cook chicken wings and drumsticks that I've marinades or dry rubbed myself
Home made pizzas using wraps with tomato sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you want.
Reheating proper pizza is also good

Could do cauliflower "steaks" if you want super healthy. Bit of salt n pepper and parmesan on them.

Gotta expand beyond the pre-made.bought stuff.

God, I need your recipe book 😂

          • +1

@BatmanAU: No, you need the internet. So many recipes.

      • +2

Anything you cook in the oven, you can cook in your air fryer - no recipe book required!

        • Typical roast vegies, light coat of oil, rosemary, parsley - bingo bango.
        • Cut up broccoli medium pieces, light coat of oil a nice seasoning comes out crispy, and a little crunchy on the ends - perfect side for a steak.
        • Chickpeas, wash them in a colander, light coat of oil, season with whatever flavour you want - delicious and healthy snack.
        • Sweet potato cubes, can par boil or dump them straight in raw.

Literally, just think of anything you cook in the oven and there's a 90% chance it can be done quicker and sometimes better in an air fryer.

    • Why tf you deactivated

I would advise against purchasing this.. no matter how carefully you clean the internal tray the coating will start to fail and flake off.

Mine lasted 4 months of moderate use before it became useless.
Changed to a glass basket air fryer and so far has performed just as well

    • +6

      Had mine over 12 months
      Tray goes through the dishwasher
No issues with flaking at all

      • thanks for the feedback!

      • +1

It appears there may have been a bad batch.. as alot of the older reviews don't seem to have the issue.

The parent company in the US have filed for bankruptcy if that concerns you

        • +1

Bought in January, coating was buggered within 3months. Never went into dishwasher, only ever hand washed. Kinda bummed because I love it in all other respects.

Need to buy some liners, either silicon or disposable ones. Anyone have any recommendations?

      • +1

        Same here

    • mmm, how come so many positive reviews then?
What glass basket would you recommend?

Haven't got an air-fryer so looking at the value in this one…

      Thanks

    • My Tefal wok's non-stick coating eventually started to became less than new but it's still a great wok. Such is life.

      • Less than new coating is very different to flaky and on your food in specs

        • +1

What does flaking mean? If you use metal utensils in a non-stick coating it eventually disintegrates. We all make that mistake.

    • Mine is as new but I wash it by hand.

A dishwasher is an extremely harsh environment for this type of non stick. None will survive long.

    • this one? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C2NSCLGY/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1…

review states a gap between the drawer and housing, is yours the same?

      • That's the one I have now..

Yes small gap but doesn't seem to have any negative effect on cooking

Agree it's heavy but basket and mesh into the dishwasher and comes out super clean

    • Tell me more about a glass basket air fryer that's easy to clean ?

We have a Phillips XXL which cooks really well and is very solidly built, but is an absolute nightmare to clean (and has reached the point where it's pretty much uncleanable).

      • Basket and tray into dishwasher… Clean.. don't really know how I can break that down further.

Even hand washing you just soak the basket and tray and everything comes off

    • We love our air fryer silicone baking tray. Game changer. Yeah you lose out on a bit of the airflow but it really barely matters in such a confined space anyway.
I think we lightly wash the actual Air fryer bits every couple of weeks - if that.

  • -2

Really miss having a removable tray (connected to the handle) to get food out… this one is awful! I wouldn't buy again.

  • +1

I believe Instant Pot company applied for Bankruptcy in June this year, so keep that in mind in case warranty is required.

    • did some one buy them out ? they selling to get rid of stock ?

    • +2

"Chapter 11 is a legal tool in the United States that enables companies to continue operating as they strengthen their financial positions in an efficient and orderly manner," the press release states. "It is different from restructuring or administration processes in other countries and does not mean the Company is going out of business."

It also only impacts their US parent company not Australia. So I wouldn't stress about it just yet.

    • Under ACL, consumer guarnatees are handled by the seller - not the manufacturer. And Amazon would have no issues giving you a refund if it died and Instant were no longer around.

    • warranty wont be an issue with amazon but likely mean a refund if they do disappear

  • Mine had a burning plastic type of smell when using it for the first weeks, it did go away though. The smell is mentioned in the manual.
Seems to work well, non-stick coating is great (unlike the cheapie Mistral K-Mart one I previously had which was virtually impossible to get clean).

  • Is the entire basket dishwasher safe?

    • I have run mine through the dishwasher and the non-stick coating inside is fine. But the outside metal is wearing out and looks crap for some reason. So I stopped running it through the dishwasher.

      • I wouldn’t recommend putting in a dishwasher.

    • The whole basket i wipe out with papertowel easy

The driptray always goes in the dishwasher no probs

    • Nope, manual says don't submerge it since it contains electronics. You need to wipe it out by hand, pretty easy due to non-stick.

  • Thanks OP. I grabbed one.

  • +3

I went to this from a Phillips with a mesh based basket, and this is SO much easier to clean. The machine isn't too big overall, but the internal dimensions are great. Nonstick was very good quality so the barest wipe with a soapy cloth would clean it easily. Another thing I liked about this model was how lightweight the basket was for how well it cooked and its size.

Word of warning - if you tip the basket by the handle e.g. to pour chips out, the perforated 'base' can fly out, so please be careful.

    • +1

Same. Hated the mesh basket on the Philips and even more so the "star fish" shaped grooves at the bottom that makes it impossible to clean.
The Vortex cleans in just a minute

Anyone knows how it compares to Germanica's 7.5L?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/germanica-7-5l-air-fryer?…

  • +1

allright, ill bite - now whats a good thing to cook in one of these so the wife doesn't kick me out

  • Does anyone know what is the max temperature this would go to? 200 degrees or higher?

  • +2

I recently picked up a Ninja Foodi AG301 air-fryer + grill. Absolute game changer! The grill function in particular is amazing, the meats are absolute perfection. I would seriously recommend to anyone.

I think they're only $199 at the moment (I got mine second hand to appease the wife, in case we never used it)

  • Instant just folded and couldn't find buyer right? No big deal as an air fryer (especially at this price) is not something you are likely needing to go back to manufacturer for, but it's worth noting - and probably means most of their products will be going super cheap.

    • +1

It's a Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the parent company. This is a form of protection for the company whiles it restructures. If they cannot fix / sell the company whole it will be parted and sold (Likely when Chapter 7 is inacted). The company is still operating as normal

  • Chicken tonight

  • I have this one and I love how easy it is to use and clean. Use it most days. Highly recommend

  • Is there a Air Fryer with stainless steel pot?

  • Thanks Op! Was waiting for this to to come dow again. Just got one!

    • Did you get this for 129? It is showing as 160 now

  • Back again at $129.99

  • +1

Showing at $158 at the moment.
