New Car Suggestions

Ok so my rego is due to expire on a 2012 Toyota Yaris towards the end of September. I have 32k from an inheritance so far that was sitting on for a while now.
edit: but also want to buy a house however i'm in Sydney and worried about the house prices.

The Yaris is still not a bad car but definitely outgrown it and I would probably prefer to be in say small medium SUV but concerned about the wait times and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on the wait times in this category. I don't have children personally but open to a family in the future and have used my Yaris with a full contingent of people which was rather uncomfortable.

Kia Seltos my be just right but Kia Stonic/hyundai venue too small? We still have a Hyundai IX35 at home but the Kona seems tiny compared to it Volkswagen T cross also looks big enough. Don't trust Haval/Chery/MG but feel free to change my mind.

Wondering where to go from here factoring in the car delivery times?

edit: can I also add won't use all the inheritance on the car, need to think about a house deposit, also okay if I have part of the car on a loan.

You have no reason to replace your perfectly working car. You will understand the value of money when you've had to work for it as opposed to it being given to you for free.

  • What do you want in life?

As an objective observer, invest the money.

Bruh, buy house first and car later, thank me later

    • instructions unclear. thank me later first or car later first?

  • then next question is how to afford a house in Sydney as well as at least upgrade to a car that is just a small medium 5 seater recent enough to have android auto/apple car play.

Salary currently around 70k and potential inheritance payment of 32k with further amounts due by end of September which may potentially double that. Looking for better paid jobs already, recruiters offering 80-110k roles with competitors or similar roles.

Now we're getting somewhere. If all you really want is android auto/apple car play, then you could spend less than $1k to have a new stereo with those features on it installed into your 2012 Yaris.

Looks like you don't even need a fascia kit, it's already a double din slot.

Go and grab one of the Sony units (they're doing a cashback sale) and find a local auto electrician to install it for you.

Just keep saving and never give up

    • The answer to that is you don't at 70k. Sydney house prices suck ass.

Don't buy a Toyota. My 2022 Hilux has 10k KMs and toyota have called me and said it's no longer under warranty with them as I have not had it serviced within a 6 months period. Dogs

So you didn’t follow the service schedule? That’s on you bro. It’s km or time for servicing you don’t get to choose.

      • It blows my mind people are like this. Spends tens of thousands on a new vehicle, and doesn't even consider servicing costs when researching? It took me a minute to find the Hilux has 6 month intervals. Bit ridiculous Toyota requires that.

        • Yea i agree its a bit ridiculous. I find it strange that they did not apply this requirement to our 2019 prado. Toyota are bonkers imo

  • Don't buy a new car as you're literally throwing away money. Try find a decent second hand and run that into the ground over the next 10, years. My suggestion look for a 2016 onwards Impreza with around 60k KMs on the odometer that will last you a while should be able to find one around 20k or under

OP, don’t waste your inheritance on a depreciating liability. Keep that for deposit for a house. If your current car works well for your needs (not for your friend’s kids) keep using it. It’s a toyota after all and will keep running.

  • Keep the car. It's a yaris and will run another 10 years easily. (i have a 2008 Mitsubishi lancer. Paint sucks, mechanically solid, still has many years left most likely).

Invest in something else or just into a decent % savings account for now really.

But if you really had to, entry level Seltos new or maybe a couple year old mid range mazda cx-5.

  • I ran a two door manual starlet for 17 years, ten of those with kids. My father had a Yaris for over ten years till he died. They are small, great visibility and the gearing spot on. Flatten the back seats and you've practically got a covered ute. Never had a mechanical problem.
Drive your Yaris till you can't no more or pass it to your mum she'll love it.
