What do you intend to do with it?

    Pedal Viking Hardtail Mountain Bike?

  • Depends on how/where you want to ride.

    STEPS.

    Research your needs
    Narrow the list
    Buy second hand

Bikes (all kinds) are treated as disposable assets. More go to landfill than ever

    • This ^^ lots of bike were sold during Covid, good chance a number of them will be available on the market due to infrequent usage. Look on FB marketplace and gumtrees.

      • Local tip shops too.

  • New bikes are like new cars - they lose value as soon as they roll out of the shop.

Have a look online to see what size bike you'd need and then checkout Marketplace for second hand bikes. You should be able to find perfectly capable entry level bikes for $300-600. Just stick to the big names - Giant, Trek, Scott, Avanti etc

If you like the sport you can use the money you saved to upgrade to a dual suspension e-bike with all the bells and whistles.

    • Except new cars haven't done that for about 5 years.

  • Since JV is a bit late to the party I'll do the honours just this time…

Obligatory description useless without information- what do you want to do with this bike? Ride to the shops or shoot Redbull extreme sports videos with it. Or something in between?

  • OK, if I had $800 and was starting out, I would look at a Giant Talon 1 or 2 (the 1 has a higher spec, but might be out of the budget) the 2 is fine to start.

However if you can get these second hand even better, try and find a Giant Fathom.

Second hand bikes will need a $200 round trip to the local bike shop, you will always find the previous owner might have treated them rough.

Otherwise BikesOnline have great budget bikes - try and find one with a DEORE drivetrain, future you will thank you.

I'd steer clear of 99 Bikes, they tend to have these really cheap no-name brands.

    • lol what?? 99bikes stock Cube, Merida and Norco.

Description says nothing. A budget of $800 is the bare minimum if you want to ride proper mountain bike trails. It won’t be until around $1500 until you get into quality bike for riding off road.

An $800 bike is a pretty decent quality bike for general runabout use, cycling with kids etc. you’ll likely get better bang for buck from 99bikes/anaconda but you’ll get better after sales service and support from a bike shop brand like Giant, Specialised, Merida, Trek etc.

If you want to ride decent MTB trails at $800 there is no substitute for a second hand bike.

  • Go to the used market. You can get plenty for $800. A few months ago I got a Giant XCR Composite (carbon fibre) mountain bike off market place. Might be old, but was over $5000 when new, and rides perfectly.

    • While maybe you got a bargain, purchasing an old carbon bike has its pitfalls. You’d want to be fairly handy with bikes to know you’ve got a good deal. Quite easy to pick up something like that with a cracked frame or worn out drivetrain or suspension.
