American Express No Longer Accepted for Afterpay

Just got this email from Afterpay, looks like we can't double dip Afterpay deals with Amex points anymore. :(

"Hi ,

We wanted to let you know that from 2 October 2023, American Express will no longer be accepted as a payment method for Afterpay. It’s important that you update your payment method before this date in order to avoid late fees and continue to check out with Afterpay in-store and online.

ACTION REQUIRED:

To update via your Afterpay app, tap here or follow these steps:

Head to the My Afterpay tab;
Tap the settings cog icon in the top right hand corner;
Select Payment Settings and add your preferred payment method (e.g. debit card)

If you have recurring payments set up:

Next, go to Orders and select Recurring payments;
Click on the merchant;
Click on the existing Payment method, choose the add new card option (e.g. debit card).
To update via the Afterpay website, tap here or follow these steps:

Head to Account;
Click the Payment methods tab;
Click Add payment method to add your preferred payment method (e.g. debit card).

If you have recurring payments set up:

Next, go to Recurring payments;

Next to Payment Method, click Change to add your preferred payment method (e.g. debit card).
We’re sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you for continuing to be a valued part of the Afterpay community!

Cheers,

The Afterpay Team."

      The only gross part are places that don’t accept it.

    • Amex, Harvey Norman and Paypal: The trinity of devils!

    Use alternatives such as Zip and Step pay…

    • Doesn't exactly work for Afterpay sales

      I have a Zip Money and a Zip Pay account and was certain they don’t accept American Express. Just tried it again after reading your comment and confirmed - Zip does not take Amex.

      And StepPay is CommBank only - and only operates via direct debit, i.e. NOT Amex.

      • Really? I did read somewhere that Zip Pay takes amex but zip money doesn't but I can't check because they declined me for some random reason.

    Goodbye Afterpay

      Agreed, this was one of the only positive differentiators of Afterpay for me.

    The reason American Express cards are no longer accepted may be due to the widespread usability of the new Afterpay card, which American Express may not approve of. I assume the decision to discontinue acceptance comes from American Express, not Afterpay.

    • I very much doubt the issue is with Amex but I think think you're on the mark with the comment about the Afterpay Plus card. That's a product that's going to shoot up the Afterpay volume at the expense of their margin (swapping the merchant fee for a monthly fee). Combining that product with American Express billing probably is a very tough combination to maintain. Rather than simply blocking Amex for users of that plus product, it's easier to communicate and a good excuse to simply cut all Amex support.

      For the rest of the normal Afterpay users, Afterpay pay cutting Amex support when they charge merchants 6% is an absolute laugh. The difference between processing an Amex card vs a credit card from Visa/Mastercard is 0.5% at most, assuming Amex hasn't done a special deal for Afterpay.

      • $10/month for Afterpay Plus and can't use Amex. No thanks

        • Hmm interesting timing cause Afterpay Plus just came out which appears to be a Mastercard facility. One can only wonder the decisions inside Afterpay.

          Sad that AMEX no more.

  • I didn't get an email or any notification, and I have payments scheduled for after October 2. So what were they going to do? Just charge me late fees? I also just searched their Help section and there isn't any mention of American Express or it's change in status with them. Very interesting.

    • Repayments on existing Orders made prior to 2 October 2023 can continue to be charged to your American Express until the payment method is terminated on 29 November 2023, unless you update the payment method earlier.

      Just got an email with that in it.

      • Well that's great to know. I'm not getting any such emails!
