Borescope - Inspection Camera Recommendations?

Hi All,

I'm seeking guidance/feedback on a borescope/inspection camera that I can utilise to view the extent of voids under the concrete foundation of my home. Alas i came to realise these voids existed and were the near certain cause of quite extensive cracking in sections of the home.

If you've had a good or bad purchase of a borescope/inspection camera I'd welcome hearing about it?

FWIW I've already got an extensive series of holes drilled through the concrete foundation (were used for sub-slab termite treatment injections and this was how the voids were first confirmed) – approx 10mm diameter.

The idea being to reopen these holes (currently top capped with mortar mix), insert cam and ideally gather an idea of the depth and extent of these voids, which will be indicative as to the best method of filling and also the areas to be prioritised and the progress made when filling these i.e what is working, whats not, much more to go etc.

Length of the scope isn't really an issue, as there's hundreds of holes to use – but I'm unsure how any scope other than an articulating one will go as when inserted it will go straight through the concrete foundation and eventually enter the void and then the aggregate/soil that SHOULD be supporting the slab (but isn't) – so unsure if the mirror attachments might assist seeing side to side or if through inserting and bending one can see at right angles a little?

Articulating obviousy cost a lot more – though cheaper one available from AliExpress and you use your mobile as the viewing device:

Local rental places seem to really only have pipe inspection cams, which have very large heads on them – cost a fortune just to rent.

If anyone has experience with whats ok or not – that'd be great, needs to have decent light – image quality doesn't need to be outstanding as really I'm just looking for the extent of the voids, which should be pretty apparent.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts :-)

I have this with the autofocus lens and 1m cable and no complaints. Of course you don't get the same picture quality of a flagship smartphone but just to locate things in a dark and narrow space it is good enough.

I don't use it often (used to check few things in the ceiling and wall cavities) so my experience is limited but when I was doing my research Teslong came up as a decent brand among the Chinese ones on AliExpress and Amazon/eBay. I think you can purchase direct from their website too.

Otherwise you have the budget models sold in tool shops and even Jaycar but I think their resolution is sub-par and usually comes with tiny screens.

I've been considering the teslong dual camera. It has a camera on the front, and one on the side, so sounds like it would be perfect for your application.

I would start with the $20 Chinese ones that have a USB plug to go into a phone or camera. Good chance it will do what you need, without spending more, and if it doesn’t, well, $20.
I would tie some cotton around the head so once the head is poked through, you can gently tug to bend the head to an angle.

    • Thats a very innovative way to make a poor man's acticulating version! Nice thinking indeed. I'd tweak slightly and use fine fishing line for a tad more strength - but that you for the idea.

You might be correct RE: getting the cheapie first - as I really only want to know if there's a void there or not, I'd imagine even cheapies will show this just as well as expensive ones, which clearly for detail oriented higher res imagery would be vastly superior.
