Budget Torque Wrench for Road Bike

I'm looking to buy a Torque wrench for my carbon road/mountain bike. It would be for very occasional use (adjusting seat post/handlebars etc).

There are a few budget options on ebay for $30 like this or this, just wondering if anyone has any experience with these or if I should steer clear.

Otherwise, the "full price" option would be something like this for $99 Azur Bicycles Torque Wrench Set

This might do for seat and handlebar adjustments.

  • You mainly need one for low torque (usually around 5nm). I mainly use the IceToolz Ocarina on my bike. I have the bigger types of torque wrenches, but never bothered using it for the big stuff (pedals/cassette lock ring/etc..)
I got it ages ago for $30. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/263046837797

The cheap one you suggested don't go low enough. 5nm is still hi, I have a nukeproof collar that's 2.5nm and those other ones arnt real account either. Buy it once buy a better one . I have " Venzo " it was about $75 of ebay

  • I've got a simple beam type torque wrench.

A bike mechanic friend gave it to me, and said that he used something similar more often than the chunky ratcheting ones purely from a convenience point of view. Turns out, it's the same for me- I have two lever-style ratcheting torque wrenches, but taking them out of their cases, faffing around looking for the correct hex bits means that I just use the Topeak instead.

    • Those are great when you just need a rough idea of the torque. Which is always on bikes. (.. carbon maybe not? )
As a bonus, you learn what 5Nm etc feels like, so you can do it without a gauge in future.

  • I picked a basic one up from ebay, does the job.

The number of things we'd just hand tighten in the bakeshop once you're dialled in was pretty incredible, right up to $20k road bikes.

Yeah, but not all pastries and cakes have nuts.

Get some luggage scales and you can turn anything into a torque wrench.

I've had one of these for 10 years and been very happy with it

Yes, this is the one to get.

I bought it for AU$61.59 back in the good old days (July 2020) when Wiggle used to be the cheapest and their website was easy to navigate.
