    • Maybe! Cold backup storage should prove it right?

I bet everyone who is saying this isn't true still double checked their account balance when they read this story. Obviously this isn't true, but I bet most of us still checked to make sure.

  • +2

    any updates on this story?

    • +2

Dude is absolutely feeling very negative, in a bad place and can't get out of bed. Apparently.

Seems like the impending doom of the AFCA has been realised.

    • Nothing since the 9th as far as i know.

Family was reporting they are very distressed.

Whatever has happened their families really need to get them two kinds of help:

Psychological help for their mental anguish, whatever the cause may be.
And i would suggest that they get that help seperately as well as together, as in 3 councillors of some kind: her councillor, his councillor, and their councillor.

And law enforcement help, for whatever has gone down.

      • +3

if this is a scam and the couple realise they screwed up bad, is it possible for them to turn back?

Can they just email CBA and say "its all sorted, no need for further investigations, thank you"

Or will they get sued regardless

  • While it is hard for me to imagine something like this happens in the strict & standardized banking system, it is also impossible to make every judgment at this level.

However, based on the below quote from CBA, it is logical to tell that the account in question does not actually hold such balances. The only way to know that is to perform a counter proof on both sides. E.g. How the couple makes up the $90+ balances leading to the "doomsday" and how the Bank holds up its historical transactions since the beginning which surely the Bank has such proofs in the system.

'The account in question (or any other account held Mr. Murphy) did not have a balance of $96,000 (or an amount close to it) at the time of the relevant transfers or the 12 months prior.

I just hope that this couple does not fall into the Fraudster's scam which using their own fabricated application.

"Conspiracy theory": Require to involve someone with high level skills and access into the banking system to pick this specific account and remove their transactions from the system. Unless there is an internal breach then it is highly impossible.

    Just my two cents.

    • +2

It would take more than 1 person internally to facilitate this sort of conspiracy, no one person has access to that many systems, whats more it would also require them having access to the bank they were transferring to as they too would have a record of the bounced transaction if it was real. So for it to be a conspiracy you need multiple people at multiple banks with high seniority and levels of system access and they are doing all this to scam a couple out of 90k instead of doing it to a corporation or millionaire who may not even notice it.

$90k for a bank is absolutely nothing. I’m certain if there was a chance it’s a bank error CBA would have rectified it avoiding further public backlash.

    • -5

I dunno. When people get tricked by scammers into bypassing security like 2 factor authentication they have started putting their foot down and refusing to pay.

      • +10

Yeah but the couple aren’t claiming they were scammed, they’re claiming the bank lost their money, which are two different things.

        • -6

Youre right they werent. However in recent comments their friends and family have said they now "understand they've been scammed"

“He’s not in a good place … and now it’s turned negative,” a friend said.
A source said the couple engaged with the media on the advice of a lawyer.
“They wanted to get things rolling and they did. And they’ve got more information this week than they’ve had in the last two months. And it’s helped them understand that they’ve been scammed.”

“To have money and then all of a sudden it’s gone missing. From what it seems, he’s been scammed somehow,” his mum told The Daily Mail. “And to think that people now think that he’s the one lying. It’s devastating.”

@bargain huntress: Bhahahahahah, SCAMMED!!!! By TAB app? Or local brothel :)

          • +4

@bargain huntress: Scammed? They said the transaction history was wiped? They printed documents of the transaction receipt and not of any transaction statements? A scam of that complexity would mean that they were visiting a fake commbank website this whole time and they have never used the app.

Commbank can easily catch them out in a lie by asking them to provide proof/information of the BSB/Acc No they were paying money into. There's absolutely no way around that they screwed up by launching this investigation.

            • @Pikaloo:

Scammed? They said the transaction history was wiped?

I know, their story has changed at least three times now if you count the comments by family and friends. It looks super dodgy.

              • +1

@bargain huntress: Can you please share his 3 revisions of his stories? I couldn't keep up

  • +16

Their screenshots are sus. The dots and balances should all be right aligned with the same gap from the edge.

    • +4

Yeah, and the smaller balance shown below the available balance is not in bold in the app. What a poor forge job.

      • +3

The odds of an interest earning account having a .00 rounded balance are also low (1%), they do give monthly interest to the cent.
But maybe that is just the media creating filler photos themselves.

    • +4

I just looked at my account, that's a terrible job they've done. The font/size is the same on all three accounts and should look like the $0.75 text they have in there.

Commbank should have dobbed them in for fraud.

    • Geeze yall have better eyes than me. I cant really see anything wrong.

    • +7

app screenshot from google play https://play-lh.googleusercontent.com/ID3k2ULKt-zAeg5rShgRMB…

comparing the two, it does look doctored. The balance looks like it has been squished to fit in to the right of "Balance" instead of moving everything to the left + not bolded

      • +2

It looks like a very poor photoshop.

What they don't realise is that there is likely a hard coded margin where the amount is so it shouldn't be possible for the .00 to be in the location they've put it.

        • +1

Exactly. Having some background with web dev I can see there is padding applied to that box meaning their balance should have the same spacing as the other side of the box, which it doesn’t.

          • +2

@ipiok: flip side is you should also know how something simple like that could have been in a previous version and fixed with an update, if they caught that screenshot within that period it could be totally legit (doubt it).

            • +4

@Willy Beamish: Or, it's all part of the bank's scam.
The bank gave them very specific styling in their app, so that their screenshots would be called out as "doctored" later on.
This is a big bank conspiracy. CBA against the little guy.
              /s

      • Where is their version to compare it too? I can only see one statement on mckauls link?

    • +4

I'm so confused. Didn't they say it was a NetBank Saver? Now it's Smart Access?

    • +1

Checked my CommBank and you are 100% right!

    • +2

Wow, good eye. Just looked at my app and you're right. Interesting..

But also this picture may be faked by one of the news outlets.

  • +1

Initially I thought it was just him being dodgy about the $, but didn't she say she attempted to do transfer? I think they're wannabe scammers and in it together. Maybe they were inspired by the homeless vet GoFundMe scam. They certainly milked the media that's for sure. Find it hard to believe a lawyer would have suggested that.

  • I still want to believe them, however this link might be useful for their loved ones. How to Stage an Intervention for a Loved One with a Gambling Problem

  • +4

The most likely scenario is that one of the two probably has full control over the account, gambled the money away, and then falsified statements to their partner to hide their dodgy antics.

However, probably when the unknowing partner started wanting to go on a spend, the culprit had to go big with the lie or face the music and bust up the family. Thus blaming the bank.

    • +2

But why would they leave it 1-3 months until settlement day to fail the transfer and cause bigger dramas?
They had plenty of notice to stage something better, like putting an obvious virus on their own computer so they had a more convincing story that hackers took it or plausible denyability that they had been using a spoofed website all year.

More likely this all started with "a little white lie" about savings to qualify for a loan and an assumption that banks are chill and will just expand the mortgage on settlement day.

  • +3

Looks like a duck, sounds like a duck.

  • +2

I'll contemplate their plight once a real news site reports it.

    • So far its been channel 7, the herald sun, the chronicle, 3aw, news.com.au and the dailymail. What are examples of 'real' news sites according to you?

      • +2

I notice you quote the Daily Mail frequently so I guess that's a real news site for you at least.

        • +3

I don't think even people that read the Daily Mail or for that matter news.com.au think they are 'real' news sites, they are light entertainment.

      • +2

Oh… I thought this was actual news reported in a few places not your daily rag?? None of the sources you mentioned are good quality news sources lol.

If you're relying on those for your sources then you're probably on the fence wondering how CBA scammed these guys.

        • None of the sources you mentioned are good quality news sources lol.

Same question again; what are 'good quality' news sources according to you?

          • +9

@bargain huntress: I would say the ABC and Fairfax papers for a start. News.com.au, DM and the Herald Sun are rubbish.

          • @bargain huntress: For me The Guardian, Michael West, Al Jazera and at a stretch the BBC. Really depends on the topic though. Most Australian 'news' sources are complete and utter garbage that are heading into the same toilet as to what passes for news in the USA.

      • Certainly none of those. Sorry!

      • All of those are frequent purveyors of clickbait and outrage articles.

    • +1

I don't think your contemplation is worth the time you spent writing your comment.

  • +6

LoL the sister thinks there was a deliberate act by CBA to wipe out transaction data for 90k
$170b company, which is subject to so many layers of regulation, going all in for 90k.
    =/

  • +2

    Hmmm no updates here.

    • +5

Dont really need any updates, the way the bloke keeps changing his story its obvious he spent all their money on something. The real mystery is what he spent it all on, my guess is magic beans.

Sadly no updates anywhere i know of. Please let us know if you know of a new source?

Update please, can someone call the news.com.au and ask for an update?

    • I volunteer you please

    • +2
