Switched Gas Provider from Alinta to Covau Due to High Prices; [Stupid] Covau Didn't Switched Even after 40 Days

Hello folks,

Today I received my Energy Gas bill of approx 1000$ from Alinta, they informed me that they will be raising price from 1st August insanely; So, I switched the provider on 28th July 2023 by selecting CovaU from compare.energy; Now, even after 40 days, I was not switched to CovaU, and now I ripped off by Alinta šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”

On 28th July 2023, I received email from CovaU that they will take care the whole transfer, i don't need to bother

What happens next?
Just relax and we'll take care of the rest. After your 10 business day cooling-off period, we'll arrange the transfer of your energy supply to CovaU and let you know once the switch is complete. You'll be saving in no time.

Today i called to CovaU they mentioned the meter reading was not done on time and most recent meter reading scheduled today 6/Sep/2023, and they didn't even transferred yet!!!!

Basically someone didn't do their job of reading meter on time.

What's the point of changing the service provider, if system still allow the previous provider to rip-off?

Whom should I complain on this matter?

PS
I am new to this country
It looks to me Aussies are paying most of income to feed energy providers

First of all.. who the hell is ā€œCovaUā€?

  • Emmoji and username donā€™t check out.

Why do you feel ripped off? Are you having to pay for something that you didnā€™t use?
Have you tried contacting CovaU and what did they say ahout the delay?

    • I did contacted them, they are saying the reason for delay is they didn't do meter reading to switch.
I paid why too high price by Alinta, because I was not switched on time
      ps.
šŸ˜” is my expression for temporarily

  • If you wanted you could have probably paid extra for them to go out and do a special read, obviously the meter reader contractor didn't do it until today. Not much they could have done other than organizing a special read which would have cost more.

It's very typical for it to take a while to change over gas

  • Satisfied with complaining at ozcomplaint yet?

You were, or will be changed to the new provider on your scheduled meter reading, which as you said is 6th Sept. Gas meters are read every 2 months so most retailers just wait for the scheduled reading, unless you want/request a special read to hurry the transfer along.
Electricity is different, with a smart meter the transfer happens as soon as your cooling off period ends.
Canā€™t blame Alinta they did nothing wrong, and you used that much gasā€¦ to use $1000 of gas in 2 months regardless of the rates Alinta is charging is a lot of usage, I would suggest less heating and more layers of clothing..

Edit: just compared rates in my suburb for Alinta vs Covau and my gosh Covau is much more expensive then Alinta..

    Alinta Supply Charge: 92.68 cents
Usage rate (First 100mj) 3.6 cents MJ
    Covau Supply Charge: 108.9 cents
Usage rate (First 100mj) 4.13 cents MJ

Gas prices in Victoria are a disgrace. I was on a fixed plan that expired in July, the balance step (>50MJ per day) for my area was 1.52c/MJ. Current pricing is 3.5c/MJ. It's not hard to run up $1k for a winter bill if you have ducted gas heating, especially if it's an old unit. Based on these new rates, if you have gas tank storage hot water I think a $300 summer gas bill is to be expected. Increase is due to gouging but also the Andrews govt ban on searching for new onshore and offshore reserves.

    • Current pricing is 3.5c/MJ.

So 12c/kWhr. Welcome to globalisation, no more cheap gas. You win some, you lose some.
We used to use oil for heating, and when that got too expensive, switched to gas.
It has been more than that in WA for many years, so gas heating has mostly been replaced with reverse cycle aircon.

      • The more than doubling in price is rude and doesn't give people take up time to migrate to efficient electric. Gas is widely used in Victoria. Reverse cycle is definitely the go though, even though the air is not as nice.

        • I understand it must be a big shock. Our houses are usually poorly insulated too. Building standards are still not good enough as it is very hard to improve later.

  • complaints are done through energy ombudsman, you best bet is also to complain about the large bill and prices

    • Thanks for sharing, will do that
