      What's wrong with it?

      • +3

        Just… Better.

Better tracking, higher resolution (worse colours though), lighter, and of course can function as a standalone.

You do really need to buy a headstap though for the quest, so that needs to be factored in which is about $50-120 depending on what you get.

The last one is a big one though. Despite my initial intention, I basically never do pcvr these days, the convenience of just throwing it on and playing something is fantastic. Bit more limited in game selection and the oculus store is pricey though.

        • +2

You can still do pcvr on quest 2 :)

          • @ihuntbargains: Yes, you can do PCVR on Quest 2, but the hassle is turning on the computer, getting Oculus running, getting Airlink connected, waiting for it to actually connect properly, making sure you then launch things in the right way so you are in Oculus or Steam VR's home, depending on which you want, and then getting down to gaming.

Oh, and then mucking around with audio if it's having sound come out of the computer still, but you wanted it just via the oculus headphones.

            It is phaffing about.

It is awesome when it works, and Half Life Alyx for example, is stunning… but I still haven't actually completed it, because whenever I have some time to game, I just can't be arsed getting everything up and going for PC VR.

            So, I'm with Ezuku…

You wouldn't think the actual minimal amount of mucking around to get it working would be such a barrier, but it really is… it's just such a pain.

Crouching down at the PC keyboard with the headset half on your head because SteamVR didn't start in the right way and so now you have to kill and restart things to get Airlink working properly.

Compared to… put on the Oculus…. that's it.

@spoco2: I have friends who are quest 2 pcvr gamers that I game with almost daily.
Also, I was merely pointing out that buying the quest 2 automatically mean you can't play pcvr games.

              • @ihuntbargains: Absolutely I could play pcvr, and I have to play squadrons which was great and much more immersive than pancake mode (with the exception of the tie fighter which was disappointing).

But having a quest makes you realise just how much messing about there is from pcvr. Incidentally, the big killer is that for me (and probably meant others) the computer is in the study, and the only large enough space is the lounge room. Yes, I could work around it and actually pick up my laptop, disconnecting it from all my peripherals and the monitor, but it's just too much effort when i can just grab the quest and start pistol whip (objectively the best vr game in existence). I don't even have to remember to charge it with the bobovr battery packs.

Maybe if I actually had the time these days to sit down and play a AAA experience like alyx (and i wasn't afraid of barnacles) for hours at a time I might feel differently.

            • @spoco2: Pay the money for Virtual Desktop in the Meta Store. It’s configurable and I’ve had zero issue with it from HL, flight sims, kayaking, platformers and other FPS games. Also, use it to do other stuff on the desktop and just play videos stored on there too. I don’t have wifi 6 and I play upstairs with computer connected via Ethernet to the router both downstairs. I tried Airlink but it never ran that smoothly for me - I think the Virtual Desktop app is worth every penny for using PCVR.

  • Oh wow totally forgot about these guys.

    2019…so 3+ years old?

Yes 2019 was 3+ years ago

        • man, I remember the days when 2019 was only 2+ years ago…

          2019 > 2023 imo

      • +7

        Big if true.

  • +3

Decent deal. But these headsets are really last gen technology now.

  • +1

Great deal, Still $1300 from most PC retailers.

Doesn't need base stations so great for more casual players and limited space.

Way worth over the Oculus in terms of quality while in VR games.

    • +1

I rather wait for Quest 3 than buy this. I have the Rift s and it is a paperweight if I try to sell it.

      • +2

Agreed Quest 3 around the corner will be miles better than this

  • +4

I got one of these lightly used for about $200 off Facebook marketplace. It’s a bit finnicky, and can only track the controllers out in front of you.
Decent for just playing beatsaber, but I wouldn’t recommend it at $500.

    • +2

You need base stations to track the controllers without relying on the headset to do the tracking.

      • Yep. And the cosmos doesn’t come with them.

  • +5

I've been in the VR space since Oculus Dev Kit 2 in 2015, please don't buy this one. The tech in this (especially the tracking) wasn't great when it came out and is even worse now in 2023 compared to the competition.

I recommend waiting for the Oculus Quest 3 if you can stretch to $830 or get the Quest 2 for around $500, it's a better experience in every way.

    • …so long as you don't care about it being a Facebook product.

  • Is there any point of buying these old VR kit? Do they still have anymore new software being released? If not, it's a waste of money.

    • It doesn't need it's own specific new software, it can do PCVR, which has most of the best VR games.

(And, in steam sales and humble bundles, they are a fraction of the cost of the two other big VR game marketplaces, Meta and Sony PSVR).

Not a bad price for a new one, but still prefer my Oculus… and check out the new Apple Vision Pro…

  • Could be good as an antique

  • +1

    Absolutely atrocious pcvr tech.
    Not worth $499
Wouldn't buy it unless its maybe half that.
and even then, it'd just be as a backup headset.

Terrible tracking, terrible mic, mediocre audio, mediocre displays.
Much better off saving and buying a quest 3. New chip in the quest 3 should make pcvr more viable with it.

  • Quest 3 is expected to be announced on this year's Meta connect though (27th Sep)

    • Technically already announced but they’ll presumably give the exact date (leaks indicate the 10th of October) and open preorders.

  • +1

If you’re getting a headset just for PCVR (like this one)…. Try and get a Pico 4 instead. Way better for PCVR than this and comfortably better than the Quest 2.

  • yeah the tech in this headset is not even worth it any more you better off waiting a month for the oculus quest 3

  • +1

The only reason to buy this is if you are upgrading from the original vive with this + the cosmos elite tracking faceplate to use with your existing base stations and controllers. Faceplate is currently ~$100 from scorptec/eBay.
