People still spend money to learn how to type these days?

    • +3

hehehehehehe:) For good quality software - they sure do! We've tried some of the free online offerings and they just don't quite cut it :(

There are a few good downloadable alternatives and depending on your taste in software (strictly business vs a little bit of fun) then you might even enjoy Typing Tournament - every one at the office had a go when they started and loved it (but they'd have to say that wouldn't they :p).

If you're after more than just 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' to practice your typing - then this is the 'game' for you. And if you've got kids…you'd be hard pressed to find anything that is as fun or as effective.

      Cheers,

      Jason

EDIT: I heard David Allen (Getting Things Done guro and productivity coach) mention a quirky little way to get more productive…learn how to touch type.

He gave an example of how many months would you save over your lifetime just by learning to touch type - the number escapes me, but it was quite a few! I mean think about it… if you 'hunt and peck' at 20-25wpm and then learn to type at 50-60wpm that's saves half a day of typing everyday! (We'll I guess that only applies if you're an author!) :P

      • "If you're after more than just 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' to practice your typing - then this is the 'game' for you."

Do they also include the many smiley faces you use in your posts? ;)

        • Hahahahaha! Nope… You've got to pay extra for that ;) :P :D

(Plus, I skipped the level on general punctuation usage)

  • Different product, my bad.

    • :D No worries foobar

Had been intending to buy this for the kids, so I just saved $40.

    • +1

Now that's what I like to hear :)

      Thanks for the feedback!

  • Hey rep, If I were to buy this, can two users use the same product?

    • +3

      Hi Voteoften,

If you mean on one computer - then yes, these 'Home Versions' can track the profiles of up to 10 users at once.

      Cheers,

      Jason

And if you mean on two separate computers then I'll borrow a reply from a similar question I had earlier…

When you add it to your cart, you'll notice the description of the license in the shopping cart is 'Instant Download Home (Single Computer)'. So no, you should not really install the same software on both your laptop and desktop ('cos that would be a 'two computer' licence).

Having said that, we'd much rather have the software out there in the hands of kids who need it instead of sitting on our proverbial 'shelf'.

So honestly, if you can only afford one copy then go ahead and install it on little Joey's netbook and Sally's desktop:) Just please don't go sharing it with Tim down the street;) trust me…I know his parents… they can afford the 10 bucks to buy it for him themselves;)

        HTH :)

Nice, honest and fair go reply… well done rep..

      • Thanks. If I install it on a laptop, does my kid have to have an internet connection every time they use it?

        • +1

          Excellent question!

No, you don't need internet access to play Typing Tournament or any of EdAlive's other titles. (However, we do have a separate online learning system at www.zoowhiz.com)

Once you install Typing Tournament it runs directly from the hard drive - no need for the CD or Internet access after that.

          Cheers,

          Jason

I used to play this back in the day :o.

Just curious, how fast can you type Jason :)?

    EDIT:

Actually, I used to play a head of your games!

I remember: Numbers Up!, Typing Tournament, Baggin' the Dragon and Aussie SpellForce (I had no idea how to play this one :/ ).

    • Hey maybeamacy,

That's awesome! And don't worry - I had a hard time with SpellForce too ;)(Just checkout some of my other posts for proof of that :P @Flippant)

How fast am I? Hmmmm… it's been a while since I checked! On a cold night like tonight I'd say only about 60-65wpm (it's really cold!). How about you?

Thanks rep! Just bought a copy of the Typing Tournament for my mother, who is learning to type :)
    Looks like fun for her.

    • Fantastic:)

I'd love to know what she thinks (it's been designed to keep us 'bigger kids' entertained as we go too!)

  • is this the same as the one on the mac app store?.. cause that one is cheaper at 8.49 but not sure if its the same

    • Hi ynot,

The gameplay and content is exactly the same. So it's great if you have a Mac and like using the app store. Of course, it's not so great if you're using a PC (or aren't too keen on the App store) ;)

The instant download and CD versions direct from our website include both the latest Mac and Windows installers for each title-so they'll work for either operating system - perfect for gifts!

It's a great find though:) Our App store guys adjust the price regularly…so go ahead and grab that bargain while you can:)

Positive vote for a good deal and a very decent rep. Far too few of the latter around here.

    • Thanks Johnno… I appreciate the feedback:)

Thanks for being good rep. If anyone is looking for a free option instead, I thought www.typingweb.com was a great website, for older users at least.

    • Hi Dussk, thanks for the suggestion. If you're after an online version, then that was one of the better ones.

      Cheers!

  • Hey Rep,
Is the reason its from ages 6 and above to do with the tasks or more the theme/game play (eg medievil worlds with a "Dark Typist"?

    • +1

Tht's correct, the theme and 'game' side of things is designed to appeal particularly to kids (6-12), however the actual typing tasks, ergonomics and posture instructions are just as valuable and suitable to children and adults.

Infact, the local guys (and gals) who wrote the text for the typing activities were careful to also included topics and texts that adults will find interesting and humorous too. ( Think Pixar/Dreamworks style movies - they even keep us 'oldies' entertained).
