How to Sell a Xbox/Steam Game Code?

I preordered the physical PC game and also the Xbox premium edition upgrade from Harvey Norman. I was of the impression that the key in the physical box was going to be a Microsoft key (and then the Xbox upgrade would still work) but it is actually for Steam. I haven't activated anything yet but I now have an opened PC edition with an unused Steam code and a still sealed Xbox premium upgrade.

Should I:

  1. Try and sell the Steam key, and buy on Xbox Gamepass instead - assuming I can then use the upgrade
  2. Activate the Steam copy and try and sell the unopened premium upgrade - forgoing any of the upgrade loot/goodies

They are tough things to sell because buyers are predictably and rightfully weird about buying game keys that could easily be activated already. At least the premium upgrade is still plastic wrapped and sealed.

Any other ideas? Or at least best way to sell?

  • What do the codes physically look like?

Presuming they're printed on paper, it's best to post it as a letter with tracking. Better yet if the paper is still sealed with no evident tampering. Best if it has a scratchy-like coating over the code itself.

IIRC, there's no way to separate the DLC from the Xbox Series X itself. I'd use the Xbox DLC as it has zero value as it can't be activated on another console.

    • The Steam code is just on a piece of paper in the box but no scratch off - what has been seen cannot be unseen! I assume the Xbox is the same but it is sealed.

I could try a return like others suggested but it is Harvey Norman and their policy from online seems not very forgiving as a 'change of mind'.

  • If it's unopened have you tried returning the upgrade? Tell them that you bought them thinking they'd work together.

Selling the Steam key will suck. Definitely don't use Ebay, they'll just claim it didn't work and get a refund. I'd try find someone you know who might want it.

  • What about an online key reseller? Never used one to actually sell a key but the principle is there.

If it's still shrinkwrapped then possibly try and do a change-of-mind return which would be the simplest option.

    • Yeah still shrinkwrapped with Harvey Norman labelling on the front. I could try the return but I have pretty low expectations given it is a preorder and I bought it from Harvey Norman.

      • +1

        Oooooof

HN, AND a preorder?? Have you learnt nothing from your time here on OzBargain?

At least JB Hifi has change of mind returns even if the product was the same price, but you're SOL here

        • Yeah first preorder in probably 10 years but I wanted some of the extra swag haha. HN had the best price for some reason ($88 for base game)

Happy to sell, I just know every potential buyer is going to be extremely suss, or ironically, a scammer.

  • use the key, no one will buy it from you. you can cash it out by buying a csgo skin then selling it for real money, but you probably can't be hassled. next best thing is family.
