Do You Subscribe to Things Like Patreon & Onlyfans?

I watch youtube videos and they keep asking me to subscribe to their Patreon, as I understand it, it's similar to Onlyfans?
Why would someone pay when the content is already free and ad supported?

Patreon is very different to onlyfans. Ask me how I know.

    • +1

      How?

      • +2

@jv has a patreon page that helps to financially support him by his number 1 supporters as YouTube has slowly been cutting back their ad revenue.

@jv also has an onlyfans page, and while it also provides a revenue stream for him, the content and purpose is very very different.

        • -2

Can't knock it, I'd rather be a content creator than work in an office.

          • +1

            @deme: you could do both

            • @FoxJump: Why would I whore myself to a faceless corporation, if I could be a content creator?

        • whats jv’s youtube?

          • @kaleidoscope: It's not a public account.
You get the password with patreon membership.

    • One is better you can do it with clothes on

  • It's one of lifes mysteries.

  • +5

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patreon explains what it is.

Some content creators don't get very much income from Youtube. You could get by without Patreon if you're MrBeast and have millions of subs but more than likely, if you're creating niche content (like 3D printing and car modding), or content that is demonetized by YouTube (for e.g you cover sensitive political topics like Russia or China) then you've no choice but to use Patreon for income.

    • +1

      TIL what patreon is
      .

    • -2

Why would someone use Patreon over Onlyfans?

      • From Google bard (information may be inaccurate)

OnlyFans Takes a 20% Cut on its Users' Transactions

Patreon currently takes between 5% and 12% of creator earnings (plus a payment processing fee), depending on the product plan chosen by the customer.

        • Wow, that's a very good reason to switch.

        • Haha, OF is 30% on both sides …

So video marked as $10 on OF, viewer pays $13 and OF pays creator $7 ;)

Fansly is much better, 15% per side :P

      • One is for adult content, the other isn't…

        • +10

You are definitely wrong, I've seen lots of adults on Patreon

          • +1

@deme: no, they are right, one is designed for adult content, the other isn't, that is not to say that Patreon cant be and isnt used for adult content, but it is basically a platform for content creators to get donations from their fans, an example is if someone sings covers on youtube, you as a fan might put in a request to cover a song of your choice and you would use Patreon to pay for your request, Onlyfans is pretty much exclusively for adult content

    • I bet there's fist fights at Dominos over who gets to deliver when Mr Beast orders. How disappointing would it be to deliver it and he just grabs the pizza, doesn't even put on that stupid fake smile, when you'r expecting a $100,000 tip or a new home.

Patreon is used to support a wide variety of content creators. I support a guy making pseudoscience debunking videos, as I enjoy his content. Advertising revenue has been plummeting over the past couple of years, and who watches ads anyway?

OnlyFans is for women who want to show their bits to thirsty men. Very different to Patreon.

    • +2

OnlyFans is for women who want to show their bits to thirsty men.

      Not just women lmao

    • I love a good pseudoscience debunking video - who is it that you support? Professor Dave?

  • I subscribe to a couple of Patreon members.
One is to make a site ad free for $3 a month. Considering what it offers, it's well worth it in my mind.
The other is for bonus/exclusive content for a hobby I enjoy.

  • +3

as I understand it, it's similar to Onlyfans?

    Lol.

Yes, in the same way that a McDonald's is like a restaurant.

Also, lol that you expect anyone to admit to subscribing to OnlyFans on here.

    • +1

Yes, in the same that a McDonald's is like a restaurant.

      So onlyfans is better?

      • +4

Yes, if you like your content with a side of daddy issues and an extra-large serving of "what are you doing, step bro?"

        For anything serious, no.

        • So you prefer mcdonalds?

          • @deme: See here.

            • +1

@Gnostikos: Well, he's not wrong. Edit: didn't realise it was you who was ranting - agree 100% and also +1'd your negged response too.

    • +2

Also, lol that you expect anyone to admit to subscribing to OnlyFans on here.

      Why not ?

      • You and deme really live vicariously through asking dumb questions, don't you?

        Why not ?

Because it's by degenerates for degenerates. The same reason you never see anyone going in and out of seedy adult sex shops or Asian "massage" parlours unless they look like Jimmy Saville.

        • Why do you always disparage my queries? It's rude and uncalled for.

The reason I asked is that we're all anonymous randoms here so what is the big deal with admitting to subscribing to OnlyFans? It's obvious that more than a few members are subscribers, even those that mock the platform yet seem to have 'subscriber' knowledge as to how it works.

    • +1

McDonald's is more like a real cafe than a real restaurant. They have real coffee machines and plenty of cafes will fry some chips or slap together a burger.

  • +4

I've previously been subscribed to 3 people on Patreon - only for $1-2 a month, not all at once and not for more than 3-6 months.
Yes, their content is free and ad-supported, but I've enjoyed their content so much I wanted to contribute so they can make more. They've all been smaller creators.

Some patreon accounts like Cold Ones post exclusive content to the site, but a lot don't.
A YouTuber who I watched early on and saw them blow up and go viral has nearly 3,000 members paying $8.50 AUD a month minimum.

I also use my free Twitch Prime on streamers who have put a bit of effort into their streams (not just gameplay) but also have little to no viewers.

    • +2

I'll not do patreon but I'll throw then some cash directly - the smaller dudes usually provide that option. Not interested in subscriptions. Usually after a binge I'll be like yeah that's quality work that kept me entertained for 2 days - here's $20 - see ya again when I see ya.

    • Some patreon accounts like Cold Ones

      AU$153,700/month 💀

      Good on them though

      • +3

I cringe seeing them spend thousands of dollars on useless junk in their vids. But then I remind myself they make millions each year so it's chump change for them.
Their Patreon income doesn't include merch, sponsors, ad revenue (probably none cause of their content) and now their new alcohol brand.

They only have 4m subs and it makes you think about how much the bigger YT channels (MrBeast, PewDiePie, DudePerfect etc) make from all of their deals.

I'm subscribed to 1 OF and I lost my login details for it, now I'm stuck getting charged per month and I don't know how to cancel…..

    • +5

Clearly you're not part of the cancel culture.

    • Just cancel your card?

      • I don't want to cancel my card

        • Do you at least get the onlyfans content?

    • I'm subscribed to 1 OF

      Which one?

  • +16

I subscribe to my girlfriend's OnlyFans.

We're hoping to meet for the first time in real life next month.

    • Lucky you, any plans on your first date???

      • +1

Zeggie will have paid for both meals, even if the girlfriend uses their own card.

    • Nice.
Is she bringing her real life boyfriend too?

  • Patreons I am subscribed to at the moment:

    • Merphy Napier
    • LM Reactions
    • LM Reactions

Are you watching it for the reactions and conversation or for the free tv viewing? Or both?

  • I've subscribed to a few Patreons to support 3D artists making models for 3D printing, and they're generally more transactional than charitable i.e. 'every month I'll produce 5-10 models and for $10 you'll get the files to download' as opposed to support me with donations. Most of those artists also just straight up sell their work at a higher price on dedicated sites like Gumroad or MyMiniFactory, so the patreon is sort of like a discount way to get a pretty big collection of cool stuff to print.

A good example if anyone is curious is OnePageRules, this is a link to their september patreon https://www.patreon.com/posts/september-88747197

I don't really see the point of it for youtuber/streamer type scenarios myself, but if you're a fan of the creator and their work it's just another way to support them (and in this way it's a similar use case to OnlyFans I guess, but Patreon serves a much wider range of use cases)

  • If I were wealthy I probably would. Some real cuties on both services.

  • Instead of subscribing to OF, OzB's would just go straight to the 'hub'.

  • +1

Drop your OF link already mate

  • Neither but I do believe in supporting good content, so I do what I can without actually spending. Liking, subscribing, commenting (I think it helps their engagement), clicking on ads (then closing the window). I do donate to Wikipedia and the guardian but maybe $20 p.a do not much, but feel guilty about the amount of content i consume.

  • I subscribe to Patreon for a podcast that I listen to because they couldn't afford to exist without fan support. While there are ads for podcasts these days, the cut from those is apparently very small.

  • -1

    No.

I watch content and give them a subscribe and/or like and the occasional comment.

It's not the viewers fault if the platforms take more of a cut…… that's between the creator and them. Ain't got $$$ to throw to every Tom, Dick and Shazza.

If creators want a full-time gig, then create more content and get more subscribers, it's not up to the viewing public to fund their pipedream.

It's no different to Community TV.

The more they ask for $$ the less engaged I become, we sit through enough adverts as it is. And if I donated to every video I'd be living under a bridge.

And if I see another Aussie Twat asking for $$$ via "GOFUNDME" who rode a motorbike in Bali, had an accident without insurance which then requires medivac back here ….. I'll scream 🤷🤦🖕

Grow up and take some responsibility for your actions.

I used to subscribe on patreon, flicking a few bucks to my favourite creators to help them keep the lights on. But over the past year or so I’ve had to cut them (and other subs) out.

OnlyFans I haven’t used, even though I’ll admit I have been tempted on occasion.I just can’t get over my own brain hurdle of paying a woman for nudes. Realistically I’m only going to look at them once or twice and that’s it. It will be in a folder on my pc never touched again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for women getting paid to expose themselves it they want compensation. I just can’t see the value in it for myself.

    Patreon - Digital beggars.
    OnlyFans - Porn-stars for losers.

  • No

  • Yup subscribed to patreon. I'm interested in the content he produces and pay wat is deserved. Much rather my money go there and large western mainstream media conglomerates.

  • My friends does OnlyFans, you subscribe cause you can put in requests or even send in gifts/items. It's all about feeling like a penpal r'ship she says. As oppose to reading an open letter to anyone and everyone on the hub. She can make you feel special, and you could contribute to her toy collection or assets (though I believe she already found a sponsor for that).

Patreon - I subscribe to a girl who does asmr rooms, she has stuff on there that's not on youtube or youtube has deleted it.
