Amazon Now Requiring Signature/OTP on Delivery for "Bigger" Orders

Just placed an order for about 90 bucks, nothing special, just razor and metamucil.

It then prompts me that the order will require a signature or OTP upon delivery. I tried reducing the order to about 60, the prompt is no longer there. So the cut off seems to be around the 60-90 range.

I ended up using a parcel collect address at my local post office instead of my place. Because if they can't just leave it at the door, then it will probably be easier to pick up from the post office just down the road.

When did they introduce this change? There has only ever been one order that has gone astray in the last 3 years, and thats because they delivered it to the wrong address entirely. (Well, there is another that gone to the wrong unit, but that was recovered) This is going to be PITA.

It’s been around for a long time. There’s no clear cut criteria for it. Some items or delivery routes are considered higher risk so they do the code thing to minimise risk. Maybe certain accounts get flagged too.

External hard drives generally get triggered for me. Whereas have had several hundreds dollars worth of stuff that doesn’t…

Can confirm. I've had both cheap and expensive items require a OTP.

  • one amazon guy delivers my items to the wrong place, around the corner

    It might be just you

I ordered something > $300 the other day, and no issues…

    • I am feeling special today!

  • Well, there is another that gone to the wrong unit, but that was recovered) This is going to be PITA.

    1. The one time code will help alleviate wrong delivery / missing / stolen claims?

    2. Why is it a pain in the ass… why not look at getting goods delivered to a parcel point if you’re not home?

The only time I’ve had to do the code was for a $900 camera. I’ve had other orders over 1k with no one time code so still random and depends on location I say.

I've had it once for an order of about $200. Other than that, I've never had an OTP code.

Given they're Amazon, they probably are using data(maybe data about you or your area) to determine when this should occur.

  • Only time I've had the OTP code was when I ordered had an Apple iPad delivered. Took an additional 5 seconds during the delivery process.
If it ensures the items delivered, with no chance of being incorrectly left or delivered to the wrong location, happy days.

    • The majority of items are just TP and slabs of drinks., or a pile of almost expired Reese chocolate Not exactly high value but quite a few are bulky and heavy.

So convenience trumps potential for theft/loss.

Perhaps your area has had an increase in lost, stolen, or incorrect deliveries.

  • If you happen to not he at location, just direct to nearby parcel point or post office if they happen to come to you you are not there, they will just come back another day.

If you don't bother with the pin, you just tell them the last 4 digit of the phone number in the account, they will release it for you.

  • I’ve ordered off Amazon hundreds of times and values range between $20-$500 and never once had this issue. I think I’ve only ever flagged 1 or 2 items as not received or lost so I agree with the above comment maybe it’s based on order history and also location (high theft rates from apartment buildings or houses on main streets etc)

  • is it because of the razor?

    • Nah, I changed the Metamucil from 3 to 2 and the message went away.

      • +3

I guess the system thought that if you needed 3 lots of Metamucil, then you are obviously full of shit.

  • I ordered something a couple of days ago. It was $200 each. If I increase the qty to 2, then the OTP msg comes up.

  • Maybe it's the type of item not dollar value. I assume cause it's the razors or the amount of razors purchased?

  • Have never had one and I've done a few hundred orders. Last time they just plopped 2x 2tb firecudas at my doorstep lol

  • I was prompted for a ~$300 item, and the expected delivery date was a day I would have been home so I thought it was fine.

In the end it was a week or so earlier, nobody was home and they just left it at the front door.

      "they" being Toll or AusPost.

      • Toll.

  • Haven't had this issue recently…… and I've ordered a wide range of products and large + small orders. But will keep an eye out on it…. I've had my account for a number of years though (started it because of using AWS), so not sure if is an age of the account thing.

  • I always get Amazon stuff delivered to the Amazon branded lockers near me.

I was just thinking the other day when I picked up the thing I'd ordered only the day before - what did we do before Amazon and their logistics. I didn't even need the item urgently, but less than 24 hours between ordering and delivery is pretty good.

  • I've seen this happen a few times for me now in relation to Metamucil of all things as well - ordering more than 3 brings up the warning.

The only other times it happens is for higher value electronics or the like, so is there something appealing about Metamucil in particular for porch pirates? :D
