Using Ultimate Gift Cards to Purchase JB Hi-Fi Online

Hey guys, looking to make use of the current woolworths 20x rewards points when purchasing Ultimate gift cards. In particular I’m looking to use the gift cards to get a “discount” off preordering a new iPhone.

I’ve seen lots of comments and posts of people claiming to use this method, so I know that it does infact work, but i’m a bit confused on if this works online or only in store.

The ultimate gift cards themself claim to work online at JB HI-FI by entering it in as a typical credit / debit card. However with this purchase I’m looking to make, it’ll exceed $2,000, and with the gift cards maxing out at $500, i’ll need at least 4-5 of them. However, I’m not sure if it’s possible to enter multiple cards / split pay online? Does anyone know how this process works?

Ideally I would prefer to pay / pre-order online, as I’ll be able to do it easily at work, hence why I’m looking to see if this possible. But if it’s not possible I’m more than happy to go in.

*edit: note i’m not associated with JBHIFI, I created this post on mobile and it wouldn’t let me proceed without selecting the option, and now i’m unable to deselect the option Mod Update: Association removed.

  • FYI, I pricematched a product online with JB and the payment didn't accept 3rd party giftcards. I used the ultimate giftcards to buy JB Hifi giftcards and paid for the order that way. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/gift-card-digital-500

Not sure how many JB giftcards you are allowed per order though.

JB Hi-Fi’s website will only allow the redemption of one Ultimate (Visa) gift card per online transaction, as JB Hi-Fi’s website cannot handle split payments across multiple Visa cards.

If you attempt to charge $2,000 to an Ultimate (Visa) gift card with $500 loaded onto it, Blackhawk Network will decline the transaction, because that Ultimate (Visa) gift card does not have $2,000 available on it.

However, there are potential workarounds (if you have the patience).

One workaround is to use an Ultimate gift card to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card directly from JB Hi-Fi. There is no limit to the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that can be redeemed in one online transaction. There are three ways to attempt this:

    1. Purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card on the JB Hi-Fi website and entering the Ultimate gift card’s details (16-digit card number, expiry date, CVV2) into the credit/debit card section of the online checkout.

    2. Add the Ultimate gift card to Apple Pay, then access the JB Hi-Fi website on an Apple device to purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card and use Apple Pay at the online checkout.

    3. Go to a physical JB Hi-Fi store and purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card using the Ultimate gift card as a payment method.

There are three main issues with attempting this workaround:

    1. JB Hi-Fi may cancel online orders for JB Hi-Fi gift cards paid using an Ultimate gift card, due to Riskified - a third-party tool used on JB Hi-Fi’s online store to determine whether a transaction is likely to be fraudulent - flagging such a purchase as being potentially fraudulent.

    2. If JB Hi-Fi does not cancel an order for a JB Hi-Fi gift card paid using an Ultimate gift card, it will only permit a maximum of two orders of JB Hi-Fi gift cards per calendar day. Any attempts to purchase more JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the same calendar day will be unsuccessful.

    3. JB Hi-Fi staff at a physical JB Hi-Fi store may stop you from purchasing a JB Hi-Fi gift card using an Ultimate gift card if they realise that an Ultimate gift card is being used as a payment method.

Another workaround is to separately purchase a JB Hi-Fi gift card to cover the cost of the difference between the order amount and the Ultimate gift card’s available balance, then redeem the JB Hi-Fi gift card and the Ultimate gift card together. That probably is not the ideal situation for you…

    • wow thanks for such a detailed and concise response. In regards to the “maximum of two orders of JB Hi-Fi gift cards per calendar day” How does this work? Do they check based on recipient email, or billing address?

Furthermore if they’re able to detect fraudulent purchases using Riskified, wouldn’t they also be likely to flag a fraudulent transaction on a purchase with several JB Hi-Fi gift cards each to the value of $500 purchased say the day before?

likewise if a transaction is fraudulent, what would happen? I assume you can’t be refunded onto a Ultimate gift card so would that mean I would just loose my momey?

      • How does this work? Do they check based on recipient email, or billing address?

I am not 100% sure. I think it has something to do with a combination of IP address and/or device information, as well as the customer details you provide (e.g. name, address, email address, phone number).

wouldn’t they also be likely to flag a fraudulent transaction on a purchase with several JB Hi-Fi gift cards each to the value of $500 purchased say the day before?

That is always a possibility. JB Hi-Fi say in their gift card terms and conditions that if they suspect fraud in relation to the redemption of a JB Hi-Fi gift card, they reserve the right to not proceed with a transaction/order until they are satisfied that no fraud appears to be happening.

likewise if a transaction is fraudulent, what would happen? I assume you can’t be refunded onto an Ultimate gift card so would that mean I would just loose my momey?

If you have Riskified flag an online order and JB Hi-Fi ends up cancelling it due to security reasons, the refund will be processed back onto the payment used for that online order. It is definitely possible to have refund transactions processed onto Ultimate gift cards.

If you have an online order cancelled due to reasons, you can try again the next calendar day and it is likely it will go through fine. That means you should be able to purchase $500 JB Hi-Fi gift cards in two separate transactions today, $500 JB Hi-Fi gift cards in two separate transactions tomorrow, etc.

    • If JB Hi-Fi does not cancel an order for a JB Hi-Fi gift card paid using an Ultimate gift card, it will only permit a maximum of two orders of JB Hi-Fi gift cards per calendar day. Any attempts to purchase more JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the same calendar day will be unsuccessful.

Not quite true. I didn't know there was a restriction. I bought 3 giftcards on the same day online, all 3 orders within the same hour actually, because my ultimate giftcard has a value of $50 each. Not sure if they will block orders for higher value giftcards though.

  • If I have 2500 dollars in 5x500 ultimate gift cards

And 3000 dollars in 6x500 dollar jb gift cards

Could I buy a $5500 TV in person or online with these?

Does it seem like I need to convert the ultimate ones manually first?

      Instore

Yes, as long as staff let you do this.

The JB Hi-Fi checkouts will let you redeem multiple Ultimate gift cards and multiple JB Hi-Fi gift cards in the same transaction. When you go to redeem Ultimate gift cards, tell the staff member at the checkout:

      • You have multiple Visa cards to redeem (i.e. you would like to do split payments).

      • When you are ready to redeem each Ultimate gift card, the available balance on each Ultimate gift card.

For such a high dollar purchase involving JB Hi-Fi gift cards, there is a chance that you will be asked to present photo ID, because that used to be a clause in the JB Hi-Fi gift card terms and conditions. It looks like that clause was removed recently, and I do not know if staff can reasonably ask you to present photo ID, especially since I do not know how JB Hi-Fi stores that kind of data.

      Online at www.jbhifi.com.au

Yes, but there is a little extra effort required.

You can redeem an unlimited number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards in one transaction, but you can only redeem a maximum of 1x Ultimate gift card in one transaction.

The workaround for the Ultimate gift cards is to convert them into JB Hi-Fi gift cards first. Currently, the easiest way to do this is to go to the exchange portal on the Ultimate gift card website and exchange your Ultimate gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card that is emailed to you. Keep in mind there may be fraud controls on the Ultimate gift card website that prevent the same customer from converting 5x $500 Ultimate gift cards into JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the same day.

You will probably agree this is much better than The Good Guys…

Online at other JB Hi-Fi websites (e.g. JB Hi-Fi Business)

      No.

      • I bet you type really fast… Even faster than most people speak think

        • Hehe I can type quite fast, but not without making a lot of mistakes!

Ok this is great thank you.

I don't think there's loopholes currently to use my ultimate GC (that I got discounted) to further buy, discounted cards, right?

        Those days are long gone?

I recall some ten years back for card upon card stacks, people getting 1200 dollar phones for 400 kind of things.
