Smart Lock Recommendations for Less-Technologically Inclined

My parents just bought a new home and want keyless entry/locking for the front door. I say "less-technologically inclined" not in a way that they cannot use a computer but rather in a sense they would just prefer something relatively simple in terms of ease of use.

They are in the Google ecosystem if that helps.

Edit: I was just told that they bought the Google Nest Doorbell.

  • Assuming they don't need to open their door with a mobile phone, they likely need only a keyless lock which requires a passcode or fingerprint to enter. Choose one that's compatible with their existing door hardware for a low-cost DIY installation. If they have a keyed deadbolt, I recommend this one US$80 from Wyze which you'll have to source directly from the US when it comes back into stock.

    • I'll check it out. Thanks.

  • Google Nest Doorbell.

    That's not a lock

I never said it was. They want to use it alongside a smart lock.

What's the point of saying it

More information, I don't know, you tell me. I thought it would help.

      • Google Nest Doorbell.

This is a totally legit question.

If you already have the Nest Doorbell (and Nest App) get a Nest X Yale Lock and it would seamlessly integrate with the App and existing account and would be much easier for your "Less Technically Inclined" parents to control both within a single UI/App.
This lock is not sold in Australia but you can get both new and used from US via eBay and this is what I have been using for the last three years without any issues, and yes it works great in Australia. However just be aware of the usual caveats such as no warranty or local support by importing from US and also the Nest subscription fees for footage (suppose you already know this)

    Then stick with a key.

    • I would do the same. However, they have made it clear that they do not like having to carry keys when leaving the house for short periods of time e.g. to walk the dogs

Cut a separate single key and put it on a clip that attaches to the dog lead.

God it sounds like something my parents would ask for!

My response would be just use the key because you’ll know what to do if something goes wrong

Not to mention who will be the first called for troubleshooting

      • Hahaha most definitely!

  • here is $79 smart lock with, PIN, fingerprint, app unlock (Bluetooth) feature: https://www.amazon.com.au/TEKXDD-Fingerprint-Deadbolt-Biomet…

I bought this one last week and installed and set it up in 20 mins. Quite happy with the purchase.

    • But how secure is it? Many of those cheap electronic locks have serious security faults. Check out lock picking lawyer on YouTube.

  • Just carry the 10 gram house key

Easy… Just get a digital lock. They are mechanical, don't require any electronics or batteries and easy to install… don't need a key and only need a PIN.

    Something like these

  • Leave the door as is and install a lockbox ?Bunnings

Then they don’t have to carry keys. They just open the box when they get home.
