Considering Upgrading from Dual Screen to an UW Monitor for Both Work and Gaming

Currently running curved 32" 3840x2160 and 27" 2560x1440.

I'll be honest. I love the practicality of having dual screens but I also want a bit more desk space so am considering making the move to a single ultrawide monitor. I don't really want to spend (but will consider spending if it is absolutely worth it) over $1000 for the monitor.

Games I usually play are RTS, Sim Racing and the occasional FPS. Work-wise, only really need it for viewing multiple windows at the same time (most times 4 windows) which I understand you could set up with an ultrawide.

Monitors I am currently considering:

The monitor will be installed on a monitor arm so not too worried about ergonomics and issues with viewing position when used with its out of the box stand.

Are there any other monitors out there worth considering?

I'm only looking at 34" because I recently bought an Ergotron LX monitor arm (up to 34") and don't really want to spend more money on the Ergotron HX (up to 49"). I would have if I didn't already buy the LX…

Can't speak about the Dell, but I love my Gigabyte. It's fast/good enough for my casual gaming, and big enough for two full-size windows for work.

    Part of me desires a 49" but it's probably a bit excessive…

    • That's good to hear. Do you have / use G-Sync?

One of the reasons I'm hesitant on the Dell is because it only works well with G-Sync above 60fps. If it's lower than 60fps, people have said to experience some flickering issues

ultrawide is pretty good and more ergonomic, i prefer it to multiple monitors

  • 32" 3840x2160 and 27" 2560x1440.

would you be loosing screen real estate ? less effective diagonal size and less pixel count?
I use 2 * 27" screens (1440p 155 Hz+ 1080p 165 Hz) and effective diagonal size is 49", so your current setup would be even larger than mine.

    • Yeah, I would be but I think I'm okay with that. I don't really need the 4k screen and am happy with 1440p.

Running a 3440 x 1440 instead of a 4k would let me increase graphics settings, especially in Sim Racing.

I went for a 34" UW find it really difficult to use for work. I'm considering buying another monitor to make life easier.

    • Thanks for your response. Curious to know what type of work you do. Is it mostly Microsoft Apps & word documents or are you more creative with photography and videography editing, or something else entirely?

      • I use a range of Office products and steel nesting/drawing software. Office products are my main issue though.

    • Have you installed any window management software?

      • Didn't even know they exist! What should I look for?

Depends what OS you are on? Eg Fancy Zones via Power Toys for Windows is highly rated?

There is a learning curve in relation to shortcuts etc

Google "Window management software for ultrawide monitor Windows/Mac"

          • @John Kimble: @stuffandthat Yeah I was thinking of Fancy Zones to help with windows management with ultrawide monitors.

If this fixes your issues (and I think you and I have similar concerns/issues), I might just pull the trigger. But question is which monitor hahaha

  • Honestly picked up a 34'' Kogan ultrawide off marketplace for $150 and it's been phenomenal, just make sure you have a fairly deep desk or you'll fry your retinas.

  • Also after a 34" bigger monitor so tossing between "Dell 34 Curved USB-C Monitor – S3423DWC" or "Dell 32 Curved 4K UHD Monitor - S3221QS" - can anyone please share their practical feedback.

    • Dell 32 Curved 4K UHD Monitor - S3221QS

This is the one I'm currently running and is great for productivity but not so much for gaming. So depends what you're after. If you're just choosing between the two you listed, I would go with the Dell 34"
