When/Where to Buy Flights for Summer Europe 2024 (SYD - ATH)

Hi all

Looking to travel with a party of 4 to Athens next year (Jul - Aug 24).

I've booked this leg many times before, however not since COVID. My previous strategy was to book as far in advance to secure the best tickets (usually 9-11 months before departure), however not sure this is still the best strategy to secure the cheapest tickets. I was closely watching Europe Summer 2023 prices and was shocked that flights were going for 2 - 2.5x previous years.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks they're willing to share for a cash strapped parent? (:

I've used Skyscanner and it's always pointed me to the cheapest outlet, however is there the next best Skyscanner I'm not familiar with?

  • Scoot, normally a low-cost carrier flies SYD/SIN/ATH but fares for 2024 are not cheap at the moment.

    • Oh cool, might be a bit hard with kids, I used scoot before, as a solo traveller I can manage. but the delays will make it a less enjoyable experience for them

      • I reckon it's no bad thing for kids to experience long layovers and unexpected delays, unless you're sufficiently affluent to minimise the many inconveniences of international travel?

  • google flights has been reasonable.
i've used gotogate for cheap flights previously

    • Oh cool will check there, thanks!

      • Use Google Flights to find routing and prices by all means, but then book direct from the airline.

Don't use Gotogate (or any other online travel agent for that matter). If both you and the airline show up at the originally booked time, it's fine, but if anything changes, you could find yourself in a world of pain and cursing trying to save $50 on a $2k airfare.

  • Singapore Airlines is on sale for that period now but to Athens theyre pointless as theyll put you on Scoot on the SIN > ATH leg.

Think about potentially exiting via Melbourne. Melbourne to Athens is a highly competitive route and prices tend to be much lower. Factor in domestic and any accommodation etc.

    • Oh good suggestion, I’ll check prices through Melbourne, however with kids an extra leg might not be feasible

    • As Benoffie notes, the catch is that Scoot flies to ATH, not Singapore Airlines.

    • Oh great will have a look there as well, yeah I’m thinking full service carrier (Emirates or Qatar) as they have decent services and pretty quick routes to and from (24hr/21hr), and other routes seem to be 28hr minimum
