Which Company to Use for Early Morning Drive to Sydney Airport?

Hello, family member is going on a holiday domestically and needs a ride to the airport at around 4.30am to make a 6am flight.

Please recommend which service is the best and available to use. Happy to pre-book in advance also. I have previously tried to book an uber for next day pick up at this time and none were available. What are my options here?

Drive themselves and do domestic airport parking

    • its 10 days away so not sure if its worth it

      • How far from the airport are they? Might still be cheaper to pay for parking than a paying for a taxi twice

        • The flight back is at a normal time so can catch uber etc. I'm needing it mainly on the way there. But you do raise an interesting point. I can't see any promo for parking at Sydney airport. They are about 20-25min away

    Which city?

  • +4

    Take them

  • Uber, Didi, Ola, Indrive

    • Uber was not available last time on a weekday at 4.30am

      • +1

        You can schedule it.

I had a couple of 6am flights in past few months, left home around 3am, each time uber was available. The first time it was a normal booking. The second time I scheduled it (and found out there is a separate fee for that, not doing that again).

      • Trains run earlier on the T8 line/airport line. I caught a train at 4 am at Riverwood recently. There were earlier ones too and there is a station master on duty. Are you able to drop them at one of the stations along this line.

  • Pubic transport could be an hairy affair that time of the day

    • -1

That's not an option as services don't run at that time

  • +1

    You could drive them?

  • +2

    Taxi.
The rest are dependent on driver availability at that instant, which can't be forecast as easily.

    • Taxi wanted over $100 for 20min trip

      • +1

        You didn't specify budget.

      • ok

      • +3

I hope you reported them, it's a $1000 fine for doing this in Sydney

Call up the taxi company and tell them to send another driver because they asked for an unreasonable upfront payment rather than turning on the meter.

  • +3

    Walk. Leave in 69 minutes.

    • Too much luggage to walk it

    • +1

Op will have a nice walk.

  • Take them to the train station

    • I dont think trains operate at 4.30am

      • +1

Check your nearest major station or intercity line station. They operate, before 4am

Why not you take your family member to the airport? Or ask another family member or a friend 🤷💁

Thanks for the comment but that wasn't what i asked for in the post

  • Uber is probably a safe bet in all major cities. Even in Adelaide I can count on a 4am Uber Eats any day of the year. But I guess you wouldn't want to miss the flight. Why would you book a 6am flight anyway?

    • +1

      'cause employer

      • Then they are paying for the taxi…

        • Of course

    • I thought that would be the case but it wasn't on this particular day. So don't want to be in similar position.
Its cheaper and I wasnt the one to book them this flight.

      • +1

I'd hope the savings were worth the inconvenience of needing to be there at 4.30am. And messing up your normal sleep schedule.

        • I know exactly what you mean, they somehow don't seem to mind

  • Try using Placie. It gives a selection of options from Didi to pricier cabs, but will show you whats available at the time and how much. I'd go with cab rather than rideshare as its more likely to arrive without delay. No point booking ahead as they don't set aside a car for you, they just call out the job a bit before. If you're concerned, download the app and try checking a few times beforehand at 4.30 to get an idea of what's available. Usually there are drivers around as, yes, no public transport.
If they are new to Placie there is a referral link on OzB too, I think its worth $20.

    • Thanks I haven't heard of this app before. They are not tech savvy so would need to be done on their behalf. But I will look into it!

    • Looks like that Placie is no longer trading.

      • whoops sorry, i didn't know. shame, it was a good idea :( i guess just dload a heap of apps and use them all?

book a night at the airport hotel
catch public trabsport the day before

    • +1

That's not what the OP asked for. Read the OP again

    • This is the safest option there are that many traffic holdups, leaving at 4:30 to catch a 6:00 flight sounds risky.

    https://silverservice.com.au/services/

If these are too expensive then, what can I say, a taxi or uber is going to be too expensive. So you need to find an alternative or a bigger wallet. 4.30am airport transfers are pretty common, it shouldnt be too hard to find a taxi

  • +1
    1. Ride apps (Uber + rivals) but you might not find a ride on time on the day
    2. Stay at a hotel near the airport and use the hotel shuttle
    3. Google “sydney airport transfer” and compare quotes. This is an alternative to taxi before Uber happened. Example: https://www.klook.com/en-AU/airport-transfers/service/syd-sy…
    4. Post on airtasker
  • We walked!
A bit of construction going on but hey if google map gets lost just follow the crowds.
Finally there is a free bus between terminals.

  • Depends where you are.

In my experience, Uber and 13cabs availability varies a fair bit in the outer suburbs, but I've never had a problem getting a driver in the Hornsby area at 4:30am. Look up how long the drive takes on Google Maps (with arrival/departure time selected) and allow anough time for a driver to come to yours for pickup should the booked one cancel for any reason.

For a 6am domestic flight for example, I would:
    - Take 20-30min off to get boarding time (or check boarding pass)
    - Another 30min off to get into the airport, check bags and pass security
    - Another 30min off if getting breakfast (food places get busy!)
    - Another 45-60min off to allow for the drive to the airport, including any time to find a taxi/Uber driver if required

So for that 6am flight not only would I be spending over $100 on an Uber, more if a taxi, I would still have to leave at 3:30-4am to allow enough time. If you're quicker at eating or getting fed on board you could possibly cut down on that time, and security might be quieter so early in the rush, but better safe than sorry with these things.

Essentially, there has not really been any good suggestions meaning there is none. Sydney is dead at 0430.

    • +2

There have been plenty of good suggestions. OP just doesnt want to pay the cost of those suggestions. People have been catching 6am flights in Sydney for decades

      • This is true but none of the suggestions are ozbargain approved. Too expensive. It means that there are no cost effective suggestions.

        • Major train stations/intercity train stations operate before 4AM. Find the nearest one

  • +1

If it were me, especially for a couple, I'd go the airport hotel. Ibis is under $120.

    • Good idea. How long does it take to walk from there?

      • +1

10 minute walk from Ibis Budget to domestic terminal.

  • Try an airport shuttle service. There are plenty of them around.

    Example
    https://anytimeshuttle.com.au/services/airport-shuttle/
Is one that operates 24hrs (charges a higher rate outside 6am to 7pm, but they do still operate)

  • I use Nav from Melbourne Chauffeured Services. Always on time, always an immaculate car, price agreed up front. It's a bit more expensive than a taxi but so much better.

    • Tell me you didn't read the thread without telling me you didn't read the thread.

      • I would insist on champagne and wine with cheese also. I will call the driver JEEVES.

  • +1

Book a taxi - pay the necessary. Tell family member never book a 6am flight again.

  • +1

I used an airport shuttle company called asn from the northern beaches for a 6.15 flight. Cost me $48 with a surfboard (so cheaper with normal luggage).

Service was fantastic, they called me when they were out the front and it took about 25 mins. Would def use them again

  • I dunno cause Uber is always available instantly in my area (Lakemba, NSW)
