Opinion on Uber Lime Scooter/Bike Hire Cost

Random Tuesday morning forum topic. I jut just noticed the cost of Uber 2 wheel hire lime scooter hire is $1 unlock fee and 51c p/minute for bikes and 54c p/minute for scooters.
I thought this was too expensive as if you wanted to use it for an hour it'd be at least $30 and it's only for 1 person. What would others be willing to pay?

I haven't looked at car next door or other car hire by the hour type options in a while but from memory it's a similar $. I get it, different uses and potentially different users but whos actually hiring these, tourists? Couples? If you've hired one before, would you again?

I mean they're all in Melbourne cbd with public transport abound so why would anyone bother apart from for just a few minutes travel?

For the escooter apps a lot of them offer daily/weekly/monthly passes that give you a set amount of riding time for a set fee and it's always cheaper than doing it by the hour.

Beam Solo in some cities will rent you a scooter for $19.99 a week and you can take it home with you.

No you clearly have no idea.

Lime has passes plus 50% discounts for low income users, Neuron have passes, Beam have passes including for low income and the weekly rental

Champ is still upset from last week so it'll be no surprise they'll be up for some trolling today.

        • Beam Solo sounds great but not available for me (Armidale) - we are under a state-sponsored 12-month trial for a rural city.

          • @singlemalt72: I find Beam to be the best provider as you're getting a Segway scooter with suspension. Their plans end up being quite cheap too.

        • 😂

            • @Chippps: Nah unable to assist. Suggest you ask clear. They seem to know a little bit about just about everything.

@Champ888: Sorry Champs didnt mean to tag you on that one

        • OMG I never even knew about Beam Solo - is there any feedback on what the service is like?

      • A business big enough that it could be listed on the NASDAQ

      • Ok champ

  • was something like $12 to cover not even 6km in Adelaide (beam), definitely expensive.
That being said, I do understand why - people behave like idiots on them and vandalise, steal, throw them in rivers etc.
The amount of people in city hospital emergency departments due to scooter related injuries is quite shocking.
This means that insurance, maintenance, clean-up and compensation to council increases costs which have to be passed on to customers.
Was a novelty to try out, but definitely will be avoiding them unless they halve in price - not happening anytime soon

Why's that? I don't use them, but I just leave them alone.

I remember looking at the prices when it first came out in Melb CBD and it was almost $5 for a 10 minute ride (including the initial fee of $1 or something). Pretty expensive. But the bigger issue for me was the compulsory wearing of a helmet. I don't carry a helmet with me everywhere I go and I also don't want to wear a helmet that's been on everyone else's sweaty head.

That kills the whole convenience thing for me.

    • Such a good point about the helmet. End up with creatures in your hair. Now I think it should be even cheaper than I initially thought.
Yeah I was just shocked and thought, am I the tightarse or is this a total rip off? So naturally, I turned to Ozb.

The problem is that demand is based on how much people are willing to pay, not how much it costs to run a service.

They set up a system that's priced at drunks and tourists, but designed it so it's meant to be used by everyone to normalise it and spread the cost. They need to price it low and just wear the costs until the service is normalised, but no one is willing to do that.

  • Random Tuesday morning forum topic.

    It doesn't appear random.

    • It randomly popped into my head this morning, like the odd ball I am. Closest to random but it might just be me forgetting what made me think of it in the 1st place and therefore moreso
      randomness born from memory loss.

    $778.60 per day

    Sounds like a bargain… 😵

    • Now now jv. Never cross a scooter true believer. They’re very passionate!

Maybe 20 - 25c a minute, but agreed they're taking the piss. When they wonder why they failed it's their pricing structure.

No one is paying that much to drive themselves around. It's purely novelty value not commuting.

Too expensive, but if you're in a hurry and your choice is walk 30 minutes across the city on a hot day or pay whatever for a scooter, I can see why people would get the scooter.

    • In melb cbd at least, city public transport is free. That's what gets me even more. Plus, it's Melbourne, it's rarely hot here.

I used to use them occasionally to get to work. No parking near the office but surrounding areas I could park for free on street. It would be 20-30 minute walk from there to the office or 5-6 minute scooter. The price per minute was about half then which made it much better value than a toll road in terms of time saved for $. Not sure I would still pay at the current prices.
