As a person who worked for eSports as a graphic designer and animator, I wish anyone in the creative eSports good luck, you'll need it.

I don't miss it at all, thank god I got out. It's worse with the AAA companies.

    • What happened? Just terrible conditions and pay, or something else?

      • +2

Everything, I am a gamer myself and I thought it was the perfect job for me, a dream job in-fact.

        Pay:
I was an award free employee cause e-sports don't have their own award and I was paid $23 (minimum at the time). I was not paid for OT, weekends, late nights etc….

        Hours:
        - I worked literally 11+ hour days. I was the only graphic and animator there….. you can imagine the amount of stuff I had to create, esports is a graphic heavy industry
        - Depending on the sports, my starting time could be from 5am, 9am, 1pm, 7pm etc…..

        People:
        - Imagine a bunch of xbox 10 yr olds saying "I effed your mum" but imagine them in their late 20's, 30's and 40's all joking in the office like they're on a battle in Halo.
        - The women in the office were ignored or looked down upon… cause you know… they're women and their opinion doesn't matter
        - It was literally a bunch of grown up male geeks and nerds. There's nothing wrong with that, but they act like children most of the time

        Events:
        - The MOST stressful part of my work, I was literally working for 3 months straight animating for 3 esports games that were hosting in Sydney and Melb arenas, I was working 13+ hour days easy just to make animation deadlines and even on event day, it didn't stop. 2 days in a row in the event, I was working 16+ hour days just to make ends meet with graphics and animation

But let's think of some positives
        - I loved working on the graphics and animations, I had full creativity with the only down fall I can steer away from the game's branding which was obvious
        - I got to create graphics for big name companies such as Blizzard, Activision, McDonalds, Paypal
        - At one esports tournament, a Blizzard manager employee approached and complimented my work and he gave me his number and e-mail but I never approached him after I left the company cause I hated the conditions.

        • Phwoar, that is atrocious. I know an ex-artist who worked on video games in Melbourne around 10-15 years ago - similar experience, and he got out just before the games industry crashed in Australia.

    • No. Id do it as PD for teaching or for personal sh!ts n giggles. Thats it.

    • +2

Not at all, anybody actually wanting to land a job in this sector needs actual experience and qualifications.
      Not some Freebie course.

    • +1

The "Mastering Game Programming" course is the only one of the 3 that I would take seriously. The other two are just for coffee sippers and pen pushers.

  • Can you complete all 3 courses for free or is just one free?

    • +2

All 3 Courses for free. Just apply promo code at checkout.

  • Courses end August 2024 so you have a bit over a year to complete it.
