In early 2023, Waters gave an interview in which he refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and criticised Pink Floyd's 2022 track "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!", which was released in support of Ukraine

..so Yeah Nah, I'll give this a miss.

Do you reckon his condemnation may have caused Russia to rethink their attack on Ukraine?

    • -1

The Ukraine war says more about NATO and the USA watching over the fence, than it does about Waters opinion. It also demonstrates that 'allowing' Russia (USSR) to be one of the holders of nukes, was a massive disaster for the planet. It had the opposite effect to deterrent.
Sanctions? What a joke. Russia is controlling global oil prices as we speak.
The Yanks are happy to take out the Bin Ladens, etc. Putin is and always has been a greater risk to global security than most of the middle eastern 'threats'.Mind you the giant orange baby loves him.

So I'll be watching it. Thanks SBS

You won’t watch a free concert because you disagree with one political stance he has taken? I seriously doubt Putin is even aware that Roger Waters has taken this stance. If you are going to cut out artists because you disagree with some of their views you aren’t going to have a lot of music left to listen to. A lot of people would complain about your “cancel culture”.

There are things I agree with Waters on and things I disagree with. I think Putin is a megalomaniac who is trying to look macho. I think the same thing about Trump. I, suspect Waters, would agree with me on the second one.

  • “cancel culture”.

Ah! The cries of the conservative snowflake crowd, when their point of view is ignored.

    • Absolutely. You don’t want to stay from their narrow, often religious, view of the world to find yourself attacked. It isn’t by chance most of the shock jocks are very rightwing. It is actually frightening how they are using threats of physical violence to shutdown events.

      • You just argued against cancel culture in your post above? Also not sure that conservatives are pro Russia, in fact I'm not sure many people are. It's simply just stupid not to watch a concert because someone didn't condemn/agree with the "current issue". I don't even know who Roger Waters is.

        • I am arguing against cancel culture. What I am saying is the rightwing are the biggest perpetrators of it. They are the ones using threats of violence to close down events and the views of others.

I also think you can like an artists music and disagree with some of their views.

It would appear we are, emphatically, agreeing with each other.

@try2bhelpful: I wish people would stop turning the world into a reddit thread - every single issue doesn't have to be left vs right, black vs white, rich vs poor, hetero vs LGBTI etc

We import a lot of garbage from the US and I wish we would stop losing our national identity by importing their crappy political discourse. Use your brain and stop parroting "clever" cliches.

          • @try2bhelpful: Not quite, I don't think any "wing" is the biggest perpetrator. Apart from that we are in agreement.

Thinking that's one random musician should have to support whatever side you've chosen on some issue is just ridiculous. Not only does their view hold no weight whatsoever, it doesn't change the music they are making.

            • @brendanm: We are agreeing on the musician point. I’m also against the cancel culture. Funnily enough the people, mainly, complaining about cancel culture are those who have a grievance with left wingers. The trouble is the people who scream “free speech” the loudest are the ones who think that women and the LBGTQ+ people shouldn’t talk.

              • @try2bhelpful: I don't know anyone who thinks anyone shouldn't talk. YMMV.

                • @brendanm: The libraries in America being defunded when they have books with LBGTQ+ themes or witches in baths.

                  • @try2bhelpful: Are you taking about the one in Michigan? Where people didn't want a special tax levy, and it likely didn't have anything to do with the type of books they had? Man people on both sides of all this crap will just believe anything.

Trump ( a tad conservative kinda guy) is Putins bestie.

          • @Protractor: One person does not equal all last time I checked.

            • -2

@brendanm: No, I agree, but he has a shitload of followers, worshippers and enablers. And another large swathe terrified under their beds.Cross borders, cross ideologies.
While may be one, he represents a lunatic collective with the ability to wipe out, a safe and workable American society, global and economic stability. It's seems the lemmings have seen his cliff and they like the look of it. I'd argue that although an individual he represents a massive deranged gun toting wrecking ball lynch mob. The fact he just keeps going in to bat for the most evil ****s on earth , and yet his home boys (US and others) keep defending him shows how totally deluded they are.The rich, the gun lobby and the military, security etc are all leaning his way.His latest ploy is to shut down America full stop, to save his gutless miserable ass.

              • @Protractor: This happens on both sides of whatever fence people are currently up in arms over. There are rabid lunatics on both sides of everything. The stuff spouted by both sides, and believed by people on both sides, often reminds me how poor people are are at using any critical thinking skills whatsoever.

                • @brendanm: Sorry I’m not accepting the false equivalences. The left certainly don’t have the aggressive nutjobs that the rightwing has. The No campaign rally yesterday had Neo
Nazis and conspiracy nutjobs in attendance. The Yes campaign the week before, not so much. There are peaceful events that are being cancelled because of the threats of violence from the rightwingers. I’m not seeing this from the left. There are people on both sides with some odd ideas but, by and large, the left aren’t threatening to follow people home and rape them. Have a look at what is happening with council meetings and council events. That isn’t a left wing issue.

                    @try2bhelpful:

The left certainly don’t have the aggressive nutjobs that the rightwing has.

It certainly does, the fact that you can't accept that is a bit worrying, you obviously only look at news sources that validate what you want them to validate.

                    • @brendanm: You want to give me some recent examples. I’m pretty sure I can give you a lot more examples than you can. You are given me the generalised equivalence comment the right normally does.

                      • @try2bhelpful: There are plenty if you choose to look. I can see the stupidity from both sides in certain things, I can see the merit from both sides in certain things. I've had to correct people from both sides, as they simply believe whatever some talking head has told them, without doing a sanity check.

You are given me the generalised equivalence comment the right normally does.

Lol I'm not even right wing 😂

                        • @brendanm: I didn’t say you were right wing, I said that is the generalised equivalence comment the right normally does.

However, I see you still haven’t given me one example. I’ve given you several of the other way around. Frankly you are sounding particularly patronising without actually backing up your arguments. Does this way of commenting normally work for you?

                          • -1

@try2bhelpful: Bomb threats against target. There is no point listing out things people have done, as it's hardly going to get anywhere is it. I'm not being patronising, it's simply true of anyone who just believes the first thing they read, eg the "shutting down" of the single library.

                            • @brendanm: Vaguely saying bomb threats against targets doesn’t carry any weight. You want to give me some specifics. I’ve given you several specific examples from the last year. This isn’t just one library, it is how the GOP Governments are removing freedoms, and freedom of speech, in their schools, health services, etc. as I have indicated you can’t just give us vague generalisations then imply it is the readers fault for not accepting your premise.

Also if you do some Googling you will see it isn’t just one library that is coming under pressure to remove books, it is in at least three states; Michigan, Idaho and Texas. An interesting definition of free speech.

                              • @try2bhelpful: I don't care if you accept my response to be honest. You have your view that one side is bad and one is good, and it likely won't be changing. I think both sides are full of grifters, and that politicians only sad/do whatever benefits them, or gets them reelected. At the moment, one of this things is creating division.

                                • -1

@brendanm: I didn’t say one side was bad and one side is good. I said one side is transgressing much more than the other. Let’s stick to the facts. You have t shown any proof to the contrary.

The trouble is when you attack the very foundation of the political process then you can’t govern the citizens. The joke is the left have always been accused of trying to tear down the state but, at the moment, the rightwing are the ones stoking division. The people at the farm who shot the cops. The woman who had the axe. These people were radicalised by the extreme rightwing to a state of paranoia. When you have a POTUS who refuses to accept an election result and incites a mob to attack the Capitol it is hard to say “but the left….” with anything equivalent.

Personally I don’t hold that cynical view about the majority of politicians. I do expect them to put the interests of their constituents above their own. I do think some fall well short. This is why I supported a Federal corruption commission.

                  • -2

@try2bhelpful: Let's generalise (it seems to be the norm as we spiral into the sewer of a dying species) The right has all (most) of the guns, anger and power.

The anger over other peoples rights to NOT live in fear seems to offend the right, who are always 'arguing hate speech is free speech'. It seems the right are more easily offended than the left , and are more often than not, bullies who snap easily. Why else do they feel threatened by a man in a frock, other genders, action to save the planet, peace, and not just being kind?

But worst of all why do they rub the fkn bible in ppls faces while championing hate and violence and self righteous entitlement over all other ppls peaceful lives?

There must be plenty of neos and their sympathisers in the cops in Victoria. Why wouldn't there be.
And if the USA right RWNJ are so in love with democracy why have they shafted it so comprehensively and so quickly and literally have no plan B/ Do they think prepping will end with a new world order?
                    Prepperslovakia?
                    OMFG that's some funny shit.
PS For a mob full of bent conspiracies the brave anti mask neo movement wear a lot of masks in public.
