Chances of changes to Jetstar flights 8 months out?

I booked Jetstar flights to Asia in about 8 months time. We want to extend our stay so I had a look at flights on other airlines and found something suitable. However I don't want to pay cancellation fees to Jetstar. I'm thinking with 8 months out changes to the Jetstar flights are almost inevitable which would give me reason to cancel and get a full refund on the jetstar flights.

What are others experience with changes to Jetstar flights this far out? Trying to gauge how likely it is.

What were the term and conditions you agreed to when you purchased the tickets?

You must be new to flying.

Why must I be new? I fly lots and it seems like at least half my flights on Qantas bought months in advance have changes (which then triggers the opportunity for a refund if the alternative isn't suitable, never taken it up though). I'd imagine with Jetstar the chances are even higher.

      Another good one Muzeeb.
Yes OP should read the Ts & Cs.
They are much the same as any other budget airline.

Jetstar may change times or move passengers from one flight to another
But generally they dont give refunds.

What did you buy with it

It doesn't matter if your flights are 8 years out - if you initiate any changes, you pay as per the terms and conditions.

OP is hoping JQ change the flight schedule by more than 4 hours or whatever the requirement is to open up the option for either an alternate flight or a refund.

      • Seems it's 3 hours according to their website. Which isn't very good as Qantas seem to offer it even for fairly small changes. Probably too much risk holding out for a 3+ hour change.

They seem to only change the flights of the people who don't want their flights changed!

        • Correct.

They use AI to determine which flights are the most economical for them to cancel.

Yeah, finally, someone understands my question.

I understood your question. You just didn't understand my answer.

It will obviously be the one time you actually want to cancel your flight that everything goes without a hitch, no flight changes and it departs on time. haha

    • For sure, and if I don't book the other flights it will no doubt be changed when viable alternatives are no longer available lol

  • Hope you bought Travel Insurance.

    • I did but not sure how it's relevant to the above. If you mean because I'm flying Jetstar, it's worth noting most travel insurance don't cover delays/cancellations that are in the airline's control, just things out of their control like weather. A few will cover mechanical issues but it's very rare for them to cover much else in the airline's control.

In regards to your question, it really depends on what route you booked. Some routes really never change besides equipment change. Other routes might have changes,

Without knowing which route it is its hard to say. For example CNS to NRT or KIX is unlikely to change.

Also the general idea is the odds are on the low side that it will change beyond very minor schedule adjustment or equipment swap (different plane).

    • This. Some routes are well established and have been around for many years with no real change to the schedule.

  • Yeah, i wouldn't count on it.

Just catch the flight over and book a one way ticket back.

    No, just no.

  • I just realised since I have a business fare I get free changes (+ fare difference) which I guess makes it worth taking the risk since if jetstar doesn't make changes that trigger a refund I can at least change the tickets to another trip

I know someone will ask why not change to an earlier flight for this trip - the alternative flights I have are reward flights on SQ so I'd rather take that and use the jetstar fair another time when reward flights aren't possible.

  • Been a while but thought I'd update as to what happened. I actually had to cancel my trip for a reason covered by travel insurance. As part of that process I had to cancel all my flights and then claim back the cancellation fees / non-refundable amounts. Coincidently Jetstar had just made a 10 minute change to my flight that I didn't really pay much attention to since it didn't matter. Anyway I asked to cancel on live chat, they told me since it's only a 10 minute change to the flight they will only give a refund if I can prove it impacted me not being able to go to an event, I told them it hasn't impacted an event I just want to cancel, and then the operator said okay we will process a full refund. Super weird but maybe he just thought he was about to get into an argument and couldn't be bothered (again, I literally didn't care I just needed proof of cancellation and it had nothing to do with the 10 minute change). Anyway, not sure if I just got someone who couldn't be bothered doing their job or if their policy is actually to refund on any flight change if someone pushes it further after telling them they need proof of missing a planned event. Didn't matter to me but might help someone else.
