Ryobi Warranty for Second Hand Purchases

I have bought a fair bit of Ryobi 18v over the years, some from Bunnings, but also a lot from Facebook marketplace and Gumtree. Bunnings used to be great with warranty, but lately I have found that without a receipt they won’t even touch it.

Can anyone here confirm whether you get ACCC protection from original distributors. All Ryobi tools have the date and serial number.

I've tried warranty with serial before. No go. You must have a receipt…

Warranty is generally only valid to the original purchaser…

This warranty will not apply to Ryobi products that are purchased from Amazon, eBay, second hand and other non-authorised retailers. This Ryobi product warranty does not apply to any parallel imported product and does not apply to any Ryobi products that are not purchased from an authorised Ryobi retailer.

      • Is that even legal? Buying brand new from Amazon voids the warranty, so if it falls apart after a day then you're just screwed? Whatever cut of the purchase Amazon makes must really piss the Ryobi company off.

          amazon

Could be wrong but I just checked 10 Ryobi products on amazon , and none were shipped or sold by amazon - all third party so probably a grey import or buying it through another channel eg with staff discount etc to get it cheaper then resell

Amazon don't sell locally sourced Ryobi (third party of Amazon us are the sellers if you look ) so why would Ryobi Australia need to provide warranty for them?

        • Yeah my thoughts exactly. Understand they don’t “want” to look after the warranty, but curious if they are legally obliged to.

          • @oscargem: Nope if it's a grey import the country of origin looks after the warranty and repairs this is like any electronics say Samsung Phones, Samsung Au wipes their hands clean as different models are sold in different countries with different variants and it makes it hard for spare parts to be sourced etc.

I suggest you read up on ACL and your rights as it's been asked to death on ozbargain…

Be careful because a lot of power-tool manufacturers warranties are not transferrable - that T&C is usually hidden in the paper-work you receive in the box.

You can usually get away with it by having a copy of the original purchase receipt so if you're buying used power-tools, either take into consideration that without the receipt you're pretty much on your own if it faults within the warranty period, or get in the habit of asking if the seller has the original receipt if it's still under warranty.

(Disclaimer: I was previously employed in a field that dealt with warranties regarding power-tool manufacturers, a few years ago)

  • I’ve had success with replacements at Bunnings without receipt where the build date was within the warranty period.

Not sure what normal policy is though.

    • You got lucky

You need proof that you purchased it.

  • Yeah watch up when you buying from Facebook marketplace and Gumtree, you get no warranty but some tools get extra extended warranty if you buy them from bunnings and registered with Ryobi.
