What's Your Preferred Protein Supplement?

Hey all,

Have been trying to increase my protein intake to try and build some more muscle at the gym.

I bought some different protein shakes from MyProtein but they're kind of gross!

What shakes have you tried that taste alright and aren't full of calories?

    Eggs

    • I don't eat eggs. I'm not super hungry alot of the time, so protein shakes are a good fit

    • At only 4-5 grams per egg, that's about 5 eggs for one scoop of protein powder.

      Advantage: jet powered!

    Amino Z WPI

    • Any flavour suggestions?

I liked Mango Sorbet but I don't think they stock it anymore. The chocolate is good too. Check the previous deals as there are plenty of good suggestions in the comments.

Og vanilla or choc still my fav. Their bags are crap though. Always randomly splitting on the zip. Both my bags of preworkout ruined.

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I had a bag arrive split and they replaced it

            • @thisusernameistaken: Definitely will be mentioning it in the next aminoz feedback. I’ve messaged Vanessa actually to pass my feedback on too. Not really fussed about a replacement, just a shame that the product actually is good value when picked up in their 4kg sale promo with store credit… but let down by crap zips

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: If it's just the zipper popping off, you can easily put it back on

                • +1

@thisusernameistaken: Hm might try taking them off and re-seating it

                  • @Jimothy Wongingtons: So it's just the little plastic zippy thing popping of, or is it the main body of the bag breaking and spraying powder everywhere?

If the first, I am not too concerned. If the second I'm going to be way more careful with my bags or use containers. I've just ordered a load from the last deal.

@rumblytangara: Nah the little lock bit is on albeit doesn’t smoothly slide sometimes, so although I put it away sealed and back into pantry, I find probably the daily rummaging around in pantry ends up enough to open the bag again…

To aminoz credit they offered to send me some new empty bags and tub containers. Can still salvage some of the preworkout I think. Protein is okay I just want to keep the bugs and dust out and protein from going everywhere. The pandan coconut one for some reason feels wayyyy more fine in powder form than the normal.

                      • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Edit turned out Vanessa meant replace whole bags plus issue some secure screw on top tubs, I will definitely be buying from this mob again.

Bulk nutrients who I was using before is dead to me. They also had issues with their sealing but they just fobbed me off.

    Goat

  • I’ve almost never thrown away protein , even the ones past best before date… but you better believe I turfed my $120 order of myprotein protein and preworkout years ago

    • Glad it's not just me! It's undrinkable.

  • Whey protein tastes better than plant protein.
And it all has the same calories - 4 kcal per gram of protein.
Lean chicken or fish is even better.

  • The Vital Strength vanilla high protein powder from Chemist Warehouse is one of the few protein powders I've found that's delicious with water, no need for the extra calories of milk. It also used to be crazy cheap but the price doubled a year or so ago bringing the price in line with most other protein powders.

    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/120402/vitalstrength…

No idea about the level of quality of the protein or the amino acids and all that stuff, but it's 30g of protein for 170 Cal.

whey isolate powder, don't use the other crap. it will cost a little more, but a lot better.

  • I like bulk nutrients WPC.
I tried their protein water drink - couldnt get into it
also have tried the custard protein powder - really popular one. had it once and it sat in pantry for 3 years until I threw it out

  • Can anyone recommend a good tasting protein powder thats pretty simple and doesn’t have lots of chemicals/add ins. I’m just after a simple flavoured protein with nothing else.

    Ants, free and renewable
    .

    • For instance, weaver ants’ larvae and eggs provide around 7 grams of protein per 100 grams in weight. In contrast, adult leaf-cutting ants and black ants contain an average of 42–53 grams and 40–45 grams of protein per 100 grams, respectively

      Yum.

@OP I've tried the Amino Z stuff. Couple of the chocolate variants, taste fine a with water definitely on the sweet size. And Bulk Nutrients vegan in chocolate. Also fine and less sweet.

Most simple flavored milks have the same Whey etc in them as over priced over marked protein supplements . So one of them after a strength training session is a cost effective protein boost. For Cardio sessions I will sometimes use an electrolyte if it is particular hot or if particularly long session (I am cyclist) but generally just use boring old H20.
Beyond that unless you are a pro athlete just ensure you have a decent balanced diet..

Where can you possibly get flavoured milks that offer 25+ g of protein for ~100 calories and $1?

Flavoured milks are under 10g of protein, 250+ calories and $2-4

No, it really is not comparable and can be confirmed just by looking at the packaging.

You'd have to drink a litre of flavoured milk to get the same as a single scoop of powder, and then you'd also be drinking 80g of sugar, versus about a gram.

So unless you're more interested in developing Type 2 or diabetes or barfing than recovery, the powder option makes more sense.

  • Rule One whey blend have great options, buy them when they're on sale at 20/25% from stores

  • Which product gives more protein per $? recently found faba beans powder at Coles give 84g per 100g. 28g/$. Any thoughts.

    • I remember trying a pea protein once when I was trying to figure out if I was reacting badly to milk proteins. That stuff was far and away the most horrible protein I've ever had. Was only available unflavoured and it was hard to mask the natural taste and mouth feel, even in smoothies.

Based on what I can find online, if it's a faba bean concentrate I imagine it's similar: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S096399692…
If it's isolate, might not be too bad.

Luckily for me milk protein ended up being fine, but otherwise the soy one was much more palatable, not much difference in price and similarly high in protein. Might be worth checking whether the vegan ones have a complete amino acid profile, can always mix from 2 sources if there's something lacking.

Whey protein concentrate is what I get, isolate is better but only marginally, and costs way more.

I try get a good quality one as cheap stuff can have bad contaminates. Aussie or NZ sourced milk only for me!

But then to make it taste good I blend it with oats, a banana and some frozen berries. Oats adds carbs, banana and berries makes it taste great.

  • Powder and as CHEAP as i can get it.

  • Thanks for the input everyone! Just placed an order with amino z
