Question about TRS Claim for Products from JB Hi-Fi

Hey fellow OzBargainers,

I recently bought an iPad and an Apple Pencil and some accessories from JB Hi-Fi, and both items together cost me over $1000(three invoices of $847 and $149 and $180)

However, I noticed that none of the invoices have my name on them. I've been researching how to claim TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) on the ATO website, and it mentions that invoices over $1000 require name and ID details.

Could someone please help clarify if I'm okay with my current situation and can proceed with claim or if there's something specific I need to do to make a successful TRS claim? Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • If the value of your electronic tax invoice is $1000 or more, it must contain your identity
    (https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…)

(three invoices of $847 and $149 and $180)

you will be fine without your name on the invoices.

    • So just give them the normal receipt which I got from jb-hifi (Which doesn't have my name/address etc) and I should be able to get my tax refund.

Also do you know if the invoice is over 1000$ the address on the invoice, if it's an Australian address will it be an issue or that's just fine?

No mention that it needs an address, just identity.

My local JB has a sign at the counter advising that if you want to do TRS etc please advise before paying and they will add your details to the invoice

    • So like did they add it as a comment on the invoice?

  • Anything over $1000 in one ABN entity, if you want to do TRS, you must have your name on the tax invoice.

JB normally don’t care about this so you will have to go to the store again and they will hand write one tax invoice with your name for you.

However, there are a lot of events that TRS staff don’t accept hand written one as they claimed they can’t read it clearly.

You might want them to do a printed version , if they refuse I will just refund it and buy it from Apple Store.

  • Is that the digital receipt that's like 2 feet long? I know TRS states they need a name, but I've had numerous claims approved (and paid out) without it, your milage may vary… eg, I had a $5k camera from JB, their receipt had no name, I just showed them the credit card which had the last 4 digits 🤷‍♂️

    • Ah I paid using ultimate gift cards, what I have right now is the store receipt, the 2ft long one, it doesn't have my name/ address / passport no etc.

You claim will be rejected without a name. It depends on the person serving you but they can reject it.
The officer there can reject it and you will be in a spot later to chase up ATO for it with the rejection ticket they will generate.
Better create a jb account and ask them to link those items into your account with a name on it or ask them to write an invoice for you.

    • Create account, do you mean online? Like When I login to my jb hi-fi account on their website I can see all the invoices there

  • @Harsh223 Were you successful in lodging your claim with TRS?

Yup I was, The officer didn’t even check anything actually just scanned the QR code from app, stamped all my invoices and refunded to my credit card, all in just 5mins
