HA Solution - Wall-Mounted Tablet/iPad for HomeAssistant

I’m contemplating what I should use as a wall tablet. There are many threads in forums with some very neat solutions. There also seems to be a bias towards android tablets. Anyone else who stood in the choice between android and iOS? Was cost the primary motivator or anything else?

I have second gen iPad mini which I was thinking to wall mount but now I am thinking it might be small screen. So, I may look for another tablet or continue using Ipad mini. Other issue I have is I dont have any recessed power point for the space I have to wall mount it. So I have to ask builder if they can create any. My plan is to use home assistance app, reolink cam app etc. Thanks.

  • I just use an old ipad 2 as the wall mounted tablet for home-assistant. It is just running a kiosk web browser that points to the url from appdaemon which is running as a docker instance. Works okay for me for the past 3 years or so and until now.

    • thanks, what mounting bracket did you use for this? and is your ipad getting charged 24*7?

      • I 3d print the mounting brackets. Works well. The ipad is plugged in to usb power all the time. Also works fine for all these years.

  • "Fully Kiosk" app is the winner for this. I have an old android tablet attached to the wall with 3M picture hanging strips, always plugged in. It's near enough a plant and counter that the cable doesn't stick out too much.

  • I'm using HomeAssistant with an old iPad with a bad battery and cracked screen. 3D Printed a bracket to hold it on the wall and it works well!
