Toyota Camry - What Is the Recommended Major Service at 120,000km?

It's me again with my Camry MY2013 ASV50R, Engine Code 2AR-FE, odometer at 125000 km. Unfortunately, the previous owner(s) lost all itemised records/invoices of the services. He only has the Toyota logbook with all service stamps and dates on the left hand side, the right hand side slips were taken away by the workshop. So I have no idea what major services have been done for the car.

The workshop that did the last service at 124000km only changed oil and oil filter and replaced engine air filter, cabin air filter, battery, wipers. They recommended the spark plugs to be changed in the next service, no mention of transmission or anything else. I recall my German car required some major services around 90k, 120k, 150k, etc.

My questions here are:

  1. What are the recommended major services for Toyota Camry at this stage, i.e. 125000km, or something I should do even as preventive measures to avoid potential catastrophic failures later?

  2. I watched some videos from Toyota/Lexus specialist who recommend transmission service even though it's life time to avoid issues with the torque converter for this year of Camry. The service includes either draining and topping up the transmission fluid or completely flushing/replacing it. Is that recommended or should I wait for any signs, which is not my strength either?

Thanks all.

    It has just run in!
Give it good oil to specs and say with 150kk talk to a transmission specialist, perhaps send an oil sample to a lab.
Different story to CVT models out of the Nissan owned plant: There transmission fluid changes are rather essential to avoid premature failure.

    • I will note that for 150k. Thanks

Whenever you buy a used car without service records its a good idea to give it a FULL SERVICE
Just so you know where you stand.

That would include transmission service, coolant drain and engine flush and at least check spark plugs.

It's a 10 year old basic Camry, not some highly strung forced induction super beast. Just request a major service from an independent next service then start a fresh service cycle from there.

There's not much to service on modern Toyota cars. Check in your book, I'm sure spark plugs aren't due until 160k. The dealer does a moisture check on brake fluid to see if it's still ok, but at 10 years old I'd get it done.

The coolant should have been changed at least once in it's life. If you can't find records then just get it done

If you're planning on keeping it forever have the transmission fluid changed, if not don't waste your money.

Service details for the service says it should be replaced!! So they are ripping you off if they are not doing it.

Standard to rip it out at service.

So I have no idea what major services have been done for the car.

Flick back (or forward) a few pages and the services breakdowns including what is done are listed in the manual from memory.

The workshop that did the last service at 124000km only changed oil and oil filter and replaced engine air filter, cabin air filter, battery, wipers. They recommended the spark plugs to be changed in the next service

120k was a service point, should be every 15k, so 145k is too, and 160k.

Flick forward in the services book and look at the 160k or 185k services, one of them is spark plugs.

What are the recommended major services for Toyota Camry at this stage, i.e. 125000km, or something I should do even as preventive measures to avoid potential catastrophic failures later?

As per what the service book says to do every 15k. Have a look at pages 26/27/28 and 62/63 in this PDF

Sure a flush and new oil never hurts and transmission.

    • Yeah, I would just do that then, as the history is unknown.

You are way overthinking this again. You are going to have a very stressful time of car ownership.

Maybe you are right ;) Nonetheless, I got a number of unpleasant experience of car breakdown out of the blue, water pump failed during a traffic jam on Autobahn, gear slipping in the middle of nowhere (had to replace the gearbox), to name but a few. I often service my cars regularly to keep them up but this one does not show to whole history, so I just want to avoid any potential problems, that's all.

Are you suggesting I just wait and see (with regular services)?

      • If done by Toyota, or similar mechanic, they would have done it by the book as Toyota recommends. As jimmy mentioned above, I'm pretty sure the actual schedule is further along in the book, and is most definitely in about a million places on the internet. Continue to service as per the log book, job done.

        • and is most definitely in about a million places on the internet

I added a link to the service book in my post ;)

Yep its all listed in there either side of the 'rip out pages what to do and when.

        • Thanks for the clarification, brendanm.

but this one does not show to whole history,

        Did you not say this

He only has the Toyota logbook with all service stamps and dates on the left hand side

It sounds like its had a complete service history to me……

Hostly if you look at the services that would have been done to date, its basically oil/filter every time. Then a few other meh items like engine air filter and cabin filter mixed in there. Nothing major on the books yet at 125k like coolant, plugs etc have been done yet, so you're pretty good to go!

Thanks for the info, JimmyF. Yeah, it has full service, just not the details, that's what I meant as "whole history". No complaints though, just curious what I should do as I'm new with Asian cars.

See my link above for the 'whole history' of what was done at each service then.
