    It's a MILC/EVIL, not a DSLR.

  • It's a mirrorless camera. What is a compact DSLR?

  • :( …. bought this for $913 - 10% GST in June for my NZ holidays

edit: whats the difference between 5nd and the 5n?

    • +1

whats the difference between 5nd and the 5n?

I think the 'D' just means that this is the dual lens kit.

  • How do we know whether or not this one selling GENUINE SONY?
Anyone bought from this store that would like to comment?

Personally, I am waiting for the Nex 5R.

@aurotaro. I think the different might be the lense that you get.
Sometimes you get one lense and the other model get two lenses.
    I could be wrong though.

    • I bought a few stuff from them and they all genuine. They are same like DWI and Cameraparadise.

      • There are two websites that selling it cheap but it is NOT SEALED because they need to open it first and to test make sure it is working before it send.
This is the one that I don't like because it may be refurbish item.

My friend bought it and then after 6 months no longer working. Not Sony brand though.

I will check this website in the next few months when they release nex 5R

I bought mine at Myer in May and there was no seal sticker on the box at all.

seems like a good price but dont know what to compare it with. A buddy bought this for $900 also.

  • +1

sooo cheap . warrantly is important for these items; )

  • Cheap.

But the 5R is also being released shortly, so expect a lot more sales to come along.

Good price for runout model SLT camera…. great sensor…. 5R is coming…

    apparently NEX-6 came out/announced. http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/47449/sony-nex-6-compact-sys…

I paid $750 for this in Binglee. a great camera to carry around instead of my DSLR.

Wish the RX100 had that grippy surface.

      • You can add that yourself but of course won't be as good as this.

  • +1

    Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice deal!

  • +1

Very good price, jump on it guys. I bought this camera for over $700 when HN had the PayPal deal. This is a great camera.

  • Having trouble choosing between this and the rx100!

    • +1

Both are excellent cameras. The RX100 is the best pocket camera, the NEX has larger sensor with interchangable lens but abit larger in size. Depends what your after and how much you can get it for. The NEX offers better value though and gives you more flexibility.

    • Kogan has a blurb on their google listing.. "worlds best price" on the rx100.
      http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&…
T Dimension beats it by $22 when you include shipping.

    Brilliant camera - unbelievable price

  • Considering buying this to take up as a new hobby, would it be fine for a noobie?
Also worth getting 3 yr diamond warranty?

    • The NEx-5N is perfect for starting your hobby. It's easy to use and takes excellent photos. All the hard work is done by the camera for you so you'll get great shots everytime. Once your ready you can even get adaptors to use with the Alpha/A-mount lenses. Up to you if you want extended warranty, I generally dont buy them.

    • Considering buying this to take up as a new hobby…

Get an entry level "DSLR" if you want to take up photography as a hobby. You will learn and progress more with a proper "DSLR". This is NOT a "DSLR".

      • Not to sound ignorant, but can't I still make progress with this? Regardless of it not being a DSLR
What stops the Nex from being "not as good" compared to a DSLR? I've read a few reviews and read that it's okay for a noobie?

        • I've learned far more on my NEX-5N that I did on my DSLR!

        • You're usually better off getting a entry-level Canon/Nikon DSLR body (can be found much cheaper than this) and slowly picking up lens kits as you become more proficient with them. These 2 brands currently have the largest selection of lenses, many of which can be purchased fairly cheaply.

Also, this cameras has NO optical viewfinder which for many photographers is a big no-no. This is a great camera if you want goodphotos without the bulk but if you want to pick up photography, get a conventional DSLR, it'll teach you a lot more and the community around them is much larger.

        • Hmm, I think it really depends on how dedicated you are to getting into photography. Although I agree with every fact Strand0410 mentions, I still think the NEX-5N can make a good camera if you're interested in starting out with photography as a hobby.

Other than the lack of a hot shoe (without an expensive 3rd party adaptor), this camera still contains all the manual options you'd need to get started etc.

So, if (small) camera size matters to you, unsure how much this hobby will stay with you long term, I think the NEX would be a good start. But, if you're really serious about getting into photogragpy in a big way, probably an entry level Nikon/Canon is better bet.

Can also depend on what you're taking photos of. For sports, fast moving kids etc, the auto focus from a DSLR would be much more suitable.

this is an epic camera. we've got one the 18-55mm lens is all youll need. we dont even swap back to the 16mm

    • +2

You should get the ECF1 fisheye converter and have fun with your 16mm.

    • Although I can imagine no need to swap to the 16mm, I'd suggest you try out the 50mm f/1.8 if you get the chance. Especially useful if using in low light or you want to de-emphasis (blur) the background to make subject stand out.

  • I tried to pay with Paypal, it appears $642.22 AUD … I guess it is due to the change of currency exchange rate? Any ideas?

    • +1

SORRY… I have changed the currency on the website and it is 613 then… Just bought one! Great Value!

  • I bought this without the free gifts but got both the 16mm and the 18-55mm. Ordered a few weeks back and got it from tdimension. Came quick and all good.

Have since bought a sigma 30mm lens as well. Great camera and good for legacy lenses. If u are in no hurry, prices may drop more in a months time as the new 5r just came out. Alternative to this is the nexf3 which has some differences for a slightly cheaper price. However I went with the 5n still.

  • Good price :)

I bought a NEX-C3 a few months ago, $600 twin kit lens. This was the same price, but with one lens.

  • Love the mirrorless compact cameras. Word of warning to peeps thinking about buying is you may find yourself boxed in for lense selection with the Sony models. If this doesn't bother you then it's a good deal and a great camera. Personally I'm hoping for a deal on the Olympus OM-D E-M5 as I am already on the micro 4/3 rds lenses and looking to upgrade.

    • +1

If you have been following photokina you would know that lens selection is no longer an issue. Obviously, it is not as developed or diverse as the m43 offerings, but NEX users should be quite happy with both how the roadmap is panning out and the number of zeiss releases.

      • Well, maybe a nice road map, but lens selection is still an issue if you want to put together a system right now.

The other thing I find troubling (for my needs, YMMV) with the road map is no mention of primes or high quality zooms past 50mm. If they had a killer 85mm on the road map, I'd be much more tempted. So, it's probably a good thing for me as otherwise I'd be too tempted by the NEX 6. I can put that money into more m43 lenses instead :)

    • Use this camera with your Leica lenses. :-)

  • Question about free shipping. Is it with tracking and insurance? Which courier company? Fedex? DHL?

    • Yes, it is with tracking. The rep told me it includes insurance but you may want to ask them just in case. They use DHL which I find is quite fast. Got my item within 3 working days.
