365 Day Mobile Plan for My Son - Data Must Be Refreshed Monthly

Hi guys

Looking for a mobile plan for my son, 365 day is fine BUT only if the data is given monthly, i dont want him to accidentally smashing all the data in 2 months by accidentally leaving youtube running or something haha

It's just for contacting him when he's out and about and for emergencies etc - want to pay around 10-15 per month and min 8 GB data

EDIT - I picked up a good deal at Lebara - 8GB plus calls and texts for $7.45 (1 month)

He isnt fussed about a number as such so il just get a new deal once it expires.

How much data does your son need a month and how much do you want to pay?

You can contact him even if the data allowance has been reached. Voice and SMS won’t stop working.

Regarding data usage. Either he has to do it himself, maybe with some support from the family, or put a control on the phone that will do it for you eg, some sort of parental control app that limits data usage.

That's not how 365 day plans work. If you want monthly data refresh you're going to have to go on a monthly plan. The only way around this would be if you both have a plan with data gifting (like Woolworths), You have a monthly one and he has the cheapest yearly one. If he burns up all the data then you can gift him half of yours each month.

Some Kogan mobile yearly plans give you the choice of the data in 'monthly' blocks….. Look under the "How do you want your data?" menu.

      or

      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

They are great plans for kids learning to manage data usage.

      • Kogan mobile’s data allowance actually started this way, by giving you a set proportion to use monthly. Only recently (~2-3 years?) did they introduce the option to use the data allowance over the whole year.

I was gonna say the same thing in that they use to only offer the monthly quota and then later offered the bulk annual quota in one hit for us to manage by ourselves.

Definitely more value for money for someone like me who only uses 40Gb-ish per annum but may have the odd big month if traveling or if home NBN is down for whatever reason. On Kogan's 120Gb plan, I have 75-80Gb contingency.

But I can understand OP's preference to give his son a monthly quota first. I would too… then transition to an annual quota if they show restraint.

OP, don't forget to install the Kogan mobile app on your son's mobile for them to monitor their usage but you keep the login so you can also log in via the web portal to monitor how they're going in terms of data usage.

EDIT: Don't fall for getting the small monthly plan at $15/month:

          https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-monthly-plan-vouch…

The medium 200Gb/yr plan at $180 is $15/mth but gives you 17Gb/30 days as opposed to the small's 10Gb/mth.

Agreed, if you have self control, then having all the data in one lump is better.

EDIT: Don't fall for getting the small monthly plan at $15/month:

Hence why I didn't link to it and it also doesn't come with the option of getting the data monthly, only in a yearly lump.

            • @JimmyF: There's actually two small plans. The Small 120Gb for $120/yr and Small 10Gb monthly plan for $15/mth is actually two separate plans.

The former you play the full year upfront and doesn't have the option to deliver the data every 30 days as you said.

The latter looks like a proper monthly plan so one doesn't have to pay a year upfront but it costs $180 if you stick with it for a full year vs $120 for the upfront annual plan. This monthly one is the one I was referring to. It's just bad value.

              • @Mugsy:

I don't disagree, but the OP is asking for yearly plans with monthly data allowance. So no one was talking monthly plans.

Exactly the same as me. I was on the large 300gb plan and last year only used 100gb so I moved to the small 120gb plan this year when it was on sale for $99, especially as the medium/large didn’t have a sale at the time. Figured if I do go over, I would just buy a new voucher, though it’s not looking like I will need to

            • @jjjaar: Yeah, I use to be on the Medium plan myself. I have a feeling the small plan may have had too little data each month. Medium use to give ~7Gb/mth IIRC which was needed if I went on a domestic trip.

After moving to the full data quota given as a lump sum, I stayed with the Medium plan at first but noticed I wasn't using much data per year. The last year has actually been the most data used at just over 42Gb. I leverage off my home and work wifi a lot.

So two years ago, I started using the Small plan and haven't looked back since.

Had Amaysim kept their $120 60Gb plan with data banking, I may moved to that as their data roaming plans are really good these days ($50 for 5Gb data that lasts 365 days). The first year or two I wouldn't have much contingency data but it would have kept things simple for me with just the one phone plan to manage. But at least my mobile can take two sims so I can just set up Amaysim on As You Go at $10/yr and have access to their roaming plans.

      • This is the way.

Been doing this for about 5 years.

    • Not exactly
There are 1 or 2 365 day plans that break the yearly amount down into monthly amounts

  • +6

Get him to research you a plan, so he understands your concerns.

  • +10

    Doesn't exist.

If they're using an Android phone, you should be able to set data warnings and data limit each month.

    • Good shout. I forgot about that function coz ive never needed it !!! THANKS :)

    • +7

Yes it does. KOGAN 365 Plan and you select data each month not in 12 month block.

    • Bad advice. As has been mentioned a few times Kogan allows you to do monthly quotas on 365 day plans. Been doing this for my kids for 5 years.

      • +1

Well, I would have updated the comment after this one but sadly those are the limits of Ozbargain.

        • Ah - fair call.

Coincidentally, I am looking for the same thing today because my son's Kogan Mobile EXTRA LARGE 365 day plan expires soon (500gb total data, delivered as 42gb per 30 days). I got it last year for $180, but currently it's full price at $300.

Kogan have other data sizes available also: Kogan - some of them have the option to spread data across the whole year.

I just saw this deal by fozzle: Lebara Large 360 Days Pre-Paid Plan - might be useful to you

    • I've always bought them around Christmas. They always seem to drop sub-$200 then?

  • If he has dual sim, or an iPhone with esim, he can have one sim for phone calls and another just for data. Telstra used to have $15 for like 5GB then unlimited, but they jacked the price up hugely. But you can use any data offer you want, the sim used for data doesn't need to be the same telco as the main phone sim.

  • +5

    Kogan.

  • Get any 365 plan that is within your budget. Set up a daily warning and limit on the phone. Done.

  • Look at Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Casual plan. $30 for 6 months and you can buy data allowance on top of it if you would like. Data is expensive and we don’t need it (why if wifi is available?) but my child is able to make emergency calls.

  • +1

Just another thought, that may help in a number of ways.

Get him a monthly plan, with as you say, 8gb of data. that way if he smashes the data in the first month or two and runs out, he understands how he has to control his usage. Nothing like running out to teach us all how to be careful. Great life experience we all learn
Then when he knows he can manage, get the 12 month plan.

Far better - he learns a life lesson, that you dont have to pay for.

Thanks Rocky, very good idea my friend !!

  • Dodo mobile $10 a month with unlimited talk text and when the included data is used it’s slowed to 1mb until it resets. You pay month to month and it’s not technically prepaid but postpaid. No extra charges and anything not included is blocked. Optus coverage

This is by far the best solution for anyone who’s budget orintated.

OP wants 8 GB. Dodo only provides 2 GB

      • read it again, slowly ~ its got UNLIMITED DATA after the INCLUDED IS USED at the slower 1mbs…

say in a month you did nothing but download at max 1mbs speed, you could in fact use up the following
        ( https://toolstud.io/data/filesize.php ) 1 month * 1 Mbps = 324GB a month, with no excess fee's to top up back to full speed!

324GB!!! Only felix's $40 plan with 20Mbs flat rate data, which gives a max usage of 6.48TB! But 1mbs is enough, Ive watched netflix on it spreaming to the tv after the included 2gb was used… Asside from 2 or 3 warnings as the included, full speed data warnings then happydays!

For a student, budget minder person or older user I highly recomend it as long as your not wanting to stream TV (free or subscrioption) and use the internet at the same time. You would need patience with website loading, but choose one or the other and its awsome and $10 a month

    • Not really. atm I'm searchig alternative for Dodo 20$ plan. no internet whole day. Technical support not responding.

  • I picked up a good deal at Lebara - 8GB plus calls and texts for $7.45 (1 month)

He isnt fussed about a number as such so il just get a new deal once it expires.

    • How to get a 'good number' cheap, is amayasim and use the number generator to get a good number from the endless lists. I know lots of people dont like 666 so I use that to seed the lists. I think my number cost me $5 this way plus the first month plan, then I ported out taking my new lifetime cool number with me (BTW calls&text only $5/$60 a year!) handy if you go dual sim, just use this for calls and text and the second sim for data… I prefer the simpler dodo $10 option myself but if you need telstra coverage, then telstra prepaid/boost/belong)
      @whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Cheap-Telstra-network-MVNO-plans

And oh, 8gb then nothing or 1mbs for the month=324GB I think dodo wins over the month!

  • For streaming high-definition (HD) video, a higher internet speed is generally recommended compared to streaming standard definition (SD) video. The recommended internet speed for streaming HD video can vary depending on the specific streaming service and the quality settings you choose. However, as a general guideline:

To stream SD video at 480/560p resolution, a minimum internet speed of around 1-3Mbps is often recommended.[dodo]
To stream HD video at 720p resolution, a minimum internet speed of around 5 Mbps is often recommended.[felix]
To stream HD video at 1080p resolution, a minimum internet speed of around 10 Mbps is often recommended.[felix]
To stream 4K Ultra HD video, a minimum internet speed of around 25 Mbps or higher is typically recommended. [felix]
These speed recommendations are meant to provide a smooth and uninterrupted streaming experience. However, keep in mind that other factors such as network congestion, simultaneous device usage, and the overall stability of your internet connection can also impact the streaming quality.

Ive watched netflix, prime, iview and sbsondemand all on dodo 1mbs
