What Wi-Fi/4G Dongle Do You Use to Take with You on Your overseas Travels?

Hi All

Looking to get a second unlocked portable mobile Wi-Fi Modem for our travels. I have had the Huawei E5573 for quite a while now and it is still going strong, just need a second one for the partner. I buy the local sim card in the country we are travelling to and put it in the Huawei E5573 and I connect our smartphones to it but as I said, I need a second device.

What do people use these days? I just need a cheap reliable one to put a sim card in.

Cheers

Edit: forgot to mention this is for overseas travel where I would buy the local country's telco sim card. The reason I want a dongle cause we have more than 1 person in our travels so want to be able to connect to a 4G dongle rather than buy multiple local sim cards. Also, sometimes we are not together, so can't hotspot if one person has the overseas sim card on their phone.

Dual sim phone and hot spot. Too easy.

      That's only 5G. Mine doesn't come with 4G.

  • Generally, there is wifi everywhere I go or my phone is sufficient.

For the occasions where something more has been required or wifi not provided, I've used a Telstra 4GX Hotspot on a 1 month post-paid plan. I had that running constantly for just over a week with no issues.

I used a Telstra 4G Plus which I connected to my router via USB when my home internet had issues. That device is probably a bit old now.

  • I would suggest most people simply make a hotspot with their phone.

Having said that it would probably make sense for 2 ppl traveling to have 1 optus network and 1 telstra network sim. (And hotspot the best connection).

(If you are travelling overseas it is not always as simple as putting a local (overseas) sim into a USB modem. And it is not always possible to hotspot a local (overseas) sim with your phone.)

  • I've got a few assorted pocket Wi-Fi's and USB dongles, with the best of those being a Telstra 4GX Wi-Fi Pro (Huawei E5787Ph-67a). I picked that up on the cheap with Telstra Plus points a while back, and it usually sports a Belong $80 starter pack SIM, also picked up on the cheap using Telstra Plus points.

  • The TP Link 4G LTE Mobile Wi-Fi modem is a recent purchase - works really well and is unlocked. Here is a link from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-4G-LTE-Mobile-Wi-Fi/dp/B01…

  • It is so cheap these days with esim just get everyone their own. Then you can split up etc without one person being withoit internet.

    • How does that help if you don't have an eSIM capable phone(s)?

Agree with the above. it is so fuss free. As a non-tech person I do not even have to change my sim card. I load as per the instructions before I leave home and it miraculously loads itself onto the local net work when I arrive in Osaka. I don't have to worry about losing my mates as I can phone them on WhatsApp at any time. Japan doesn't seem to have short term sim card plan for phone and data. Only data or that's what I was told at Narita and in Tokyo. Maybe someone can explain how it works.

    • Which company did you get the s8m from?

Used to do about ten trips a year prior covid, never once did I wish that I have a travel router.

Wifi is everywhere, and phone hotspots is a thing.

Remember that WiFi dongle also means an extra thing to have to plug in and charge each night.

Also, sometimes we are not together, so can't hotspot if one person has the overseas sim card on their phone.

Not sure if I'm reading what you've written correctly - If you're not together, one of you has to take the dongle so it means the other person can't use it anyway.

For internet on the go, we usually each just get a local travel SIM.

For when we're stationary, the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 / Slate AX is an absolute joy. We have it pre-configured on all our devices, so plug in or log into hotel wifi once, then all our devices just work. We also have it setup with our VPN account, for when we want absolute privacy on the hotel internet.

  • I usually buy esim.
