This is the long-awaited GOG freebie release of the 2014 retro-styled adventure RPG Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok (it was only previously available on Steam and itch.io).

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok Trailer video

Explore the rich world of Nordic mythology! Egther, last of the Frost Giants, has sworn to turn all the world to ice. A young heroine is called to fight him, but first she must survive the harsh environment, battle hostile trolls, and deal with many creatures and characters from the classic myths.

Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is an adventure / RPG hybrid. Like in many adventure games, you have a world to save, and must use your wit, guile and inventory to puzzle your way through. Like in many roleplaying games, you can customize your character with various classes and skills, and must train yourself in combat to stand a chance against the fierce monsters in your way. Each class has her own solution to the numerous obstacles, where the warrior is the most straightforward to play, the sorceress focuses on smart solutions and finding the right spell for the situation, and the rogue cheats her way through life without getting caught.

The game is designed in the spirit and atmosphere of the classics, and strives to have the same high quality of art, music, and plot. With multiple character classes and several solutions to many puzzles, there are plenty of options for further replayability. The game has been voted 69th All-Time Best Computer RPG by RpgCodex. It is available completely for free, or as we like to call it, priceless.

"It's great to see a female-centric heroic quest." - Corey Cole
"The very definition of a labor of love … makes the world of Jarnvidr feel alive to a degree rarely seen in point and click adventure games." - HardcodeGaming101
"I was still discovering new quests and things to do even on a third playthrough." - Last Token

Heroine's Quest: Developer Appreciation Package on GOG and Steam
  • Normally priced at A$4.50 on GOG and A$4.49 on Steam (source: IsThereAnyDeal)

Heroine's Quest is freeware. If you want to show your support for the development team, you can post a big 'thank you' on the community group, and/or you can get this DLC as a small token to us. You will receive this package with developer's documents and information on the history of Heroine's Quest; several resources that ended up not being in the game; and an old alpha build to play around with, that was used for internal bugtesting. This is for your curiosity and interest; the main game contains everything you need to play, for free.

Did you know that the developers live on three different continents? That the original design called for a fifth chapter on Yggdrasil? That short 3D movies were in the works to introduce the cities in the game? Find out all this, and more, in the developers notes for everybody's favorite Norse-themed female-protagonist Sierra'esque adventure-RPG-retro-hybrid!

This is an incredible game, but it has always been free, even if it's now on GoG.

It's a tribute to the old Quest for Glory series.

Yeah I absolutely loved it! They have made another point and click game which I played the demo of and enjoyed - a tale of two kingdoms.

From memory it was called Hero's Quest originally but changed the name due to the similarity to the board game.

I had a lot of fun with this in 2014. Also Quest for Infamy and Mage's Initiation.
