Experiences Installing Tasmota on Tuya Devices

First ever post so please be gentle. I’m a bit late to the tasmota party and most of the Tuya devices I have are esp8266, but are on a newer firmware that cannot be flashed using tuya convert over the air. I’d very much like to use these but they’re basically a bit net waiting to happen in your house without custom firmware.

I’ve never soldered so butchering the devices in that way is out of the question, but I saw a 3d printed springy jig that can be used to connect to the pins of the esp8266 module. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imKZbhJ8lvU

I’ve got two questions. Have any true beginners here successfully flashed tasmota using the serial method and does anyone familiar with maker spaces think that’s the kind of place to find the tools and advice to do it?

Thanks!

https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant and similar subreddits are probably better places to ask. Much more experienced users, and a lot more niche since Tuya/Tasmota/ESPhome is a whole entire rabbithole to go down

Hi, the clips with the pogopins are fine, IF you can get to the chip easily. Most things I've soldered and flashed are very small and cramped with no chance to get a clip on and orientated correctly.

Ive heard mostly good things about running tuya local with HomeAssistant but ive never bothered.

Learn a new skill and solder them. A steady hand, magnified glass, a small iron and some patience is all you need. Its not hard and plenty of training online. It will help you build more custom sensors etc in the future for cheap. The tasmota subreddit has smart people willing to help also on the software side. Shout out to @Tacooo on OZB, really helped me get started on the soldering side, cheers.

Athom also sell preflashed TAS devices.

Happy to help where I can.

    • This is an incredible response, thank you.

I like the idea of using a new skill. Will test how steady my hands are. Do you think it’s worth learning soldering for a tasmota flash? The chips are easy to get to, I just haven’t been confident about my hands and was looking ag the springy pin solution on YouTube.

Thanks for being so willing to share.

Have a look at digiblurDIY videos on LibreTiny. It's a fork/update of the cloudcutter project that can work with a lot of the Tuya devices with new chips & firmware:

I'd second nofate's recommendation of looking at Athom.tech tasmota/ESPHome/Wled when shopping for new devices. Note that it's currently cheaper to buy from https://athom.tech store than their AliExpress shopfront. But keep an eye on the Singles Day sales.

Also for new cloud-free devices; if you've got a hub such as Home Assistant keep Zigbee in mind. And also bluetooth for things like temperature/humidity sensors.
