TRS Claim - Billing Name Is Different from Traveler

Guys,

I know that similar posts might exist somewhere but I cant find any that matches what I am trying to find out.

My partner is doing a trip back home soon and I helped purchasing a bag online (>A$ 1,000) as a gift for mom.

The tax invoice has my partner's name on shipping info but my name on billing info. Both addresses are the same, just needed different name on billing info section for credit card verification purpose.

Has anyone comes across this situation and got rejected for the claim? Does the GST refund goes off the shipping info or billing info?

Much thanks in advance if anyone could provide advice on this.

Tax invoices for sales of $1000 or more must also include the buyer's identity, for example their full name or passport number.

On another page, it says under the section 'You can't':

[claim] if the invoice has a name other than your own as the buyer

      Additionally:

your name (and only your name) as it appears in your passport if the invoice is $1,000 or more

If the name at the top of the Tax Invoice is in the name of the traveller, I would give it a go anyway. It's worth trying - It they accept it, you get about $100 or more back… If not, they'll just say no.

    • might do this. worst case is getting a no :) thanks

      • They've never really sat there and gone through the invoices with a fine tooth comb because it's always quite busy with the number of people hanging around.

        • They don’t get fully approved on the spot. Them accepting the paperwork means it looks good enough and complete to be thoroughly checked.
In any case, worth a try and I would approve it if it was up to me.

  • The person who is travelling must have bought the goods and must be travelling. You cannot make a TRS claim for someone else such as partner, relative or friend.
