Stihl BG86 Blower Dead Need Replacement

Fellow ozbargain friends,

My stihl 2 stroke BG86 has died with an exhaust issue. I've repaired a few times but the exhaust is beyond repair. I did pay $250 for the bg86 2 stroke unit 8 years ago. So good value for the outlay.

Need to buy something.

I've got a Ryobi 18v 2.0h battery and hedge trimmer and charger $99 from ozbargain deal so could go Ryobi.

I feel like I'll be disappointed at the power output of a ryobi unit compared to BG86 2 stroke.

I could find another BG86 used on marketplace for $200-$250.

Or slap a Ryobi unit with a 5 year warranty?

Any suggestions? I am cheap and very ozbargain.

A battery 36v brushless Stihl is around $399 at the shop don't know if I should go that route. Just a big outlay for ozbargain boy.

PS, I've only got around 200m2 of lawn

Thanks all x

  • I have the basic Ryobi blower (R18BLW24), it's really good for its size and insanely comfy to use.

You will be. I have an equivalent ozito that I use exclusively for blowing the dust out of the shed. That's all it's good for. My BG86 is still going strong after 10 years but I will need a new priming bulb soon. It kicks arse compared to a base model battery powered unit.

    • Agreed, the 18v is a bit under-powered for gardening. Haven't tried the 36v.

You use the leaf blower on your lawn? I never realised that was a thing. https://www.bunnings.com.au/44cm-plastic-leaf-rake_p3350684

Yeah but a blower is less work and has the added benefit of p!ssing off all your neighbours with the noise.

      • My neighbours have a policy of "It's okay for us to make noise at all hours of the day, but you have to warn us if you're going to make noise"

      • "p!ssing off all your neighbours with the noise."
        & dust

my dad gave me his old BG86 and that thing is great for what it is. Can't expect the cheapy Ryobi to even got half way against it, you will be sorely disappointed (I have this blower too).

if you want electric, i heartily recommend the 56v ego blower. bg86 sits unused these days (which is probably pretty bad for it…)

    • My neighbour has an ego, seems to go hard. It's unfortunately over my price range

    Hey @SoTightEcoLPI

I have a BG86 2 stroke and wanted a battery alternative for yonks

I stumbled on this model Ryobi at Bunnings which had been returned because someone thought it came with batteries, so got it a bit cheaper

    https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/18v-one-4ah-hp-bru…

This unit runs pretty calmly at standard throttle, but it has a boost button on the top which i think get close enough to the Stihl job, or close enough for me that I havent had the 2 stroke out in nearly a year since getting this blower

I have an acre of land and have all the tree's you could imagine so this blower cops a hiding

    Pros:
    - Super quiet, can get out and blow at 6am and not annoy anyone, even better if you have a small block
    - Good battery life on standard setting, chews it a bit on boost, but its fine if you have a few batteries and the low setting still moves some air
    - Its got volume, not high flow, so good for larger yards moving lots of shit, not like the smaller battery blowers which are more directional (I also have those to compare)
    - Its got high flow on boost

    Cons:
    - TBH i cant think of any, im sure some of the newer models have more air flow again but this does the job really well

I dont even know if this unit is still available, but i find this one to be great and any newer models with similar air flow and larger outlets would do you fine

Hope that helps, let me know if you need any more info!

    • Thanks so much, exactly what I wanted to hear. Least I've got a Bunnings change over warranty with the purchase.

      • Yeah, give one with a bit of oomph a go, one with a boost button is your best bet, and a whisper model is even better. No ear plugs, no fuel, no annoying your neighbours

What exactly do you do with your blower? I’ve got an older Ryobi 18v. Perfect for blowing the gras clippings off the driveway after mowing. Good for ‘sweeping’ out the garage. Also used one a work a few times, it’s not as powerful as a petrol version but it’s so much lighter and more convenient.

I’ll never have a petrol powered garden tool at home again.

  • I bought an atom 2 stroke, Australian made, for $299 a while back. It’s been great

  • Apples and pears, but for me the Ryobi OBL1820S does what I want it to do, and then some.

In fact I use it to clean about 60-70m of gutters, regularly(when gutters are dry)
More than happy Feck the extra noise, fuel, smell issues

I had a Homelite 2 stroke blower, which was a good unit but was getting a little of a pain to mix the fuel and she would often run a little rough and my mower also was on the fritz, so I bought a Makita package that had a 36V mower, and came with an 18V blower as redemption. I feel that when the 18V battery is on full charge, the Makita blower is on par with the Homelite 2 stroke blower that I had; the Makita has a larger output vent than what the Homelite had.

There’s probably a bit of difference between the Makita, and the Ryobi but I doubt it’s much, if noticeable at all. I would have gone Ryobi too, but with the redemption, and some Total Tools points Makita ended up being cheaper, unbelievably.

At any rate, if you’ve already got the 18V Ryobi set up, I’d definitely give a Ryobi blower a go. The only thing is that if you’ve only got a 2.0 AH battery, it will probably chew through the juice rather quickly.

    • Good point, i have 2 chinese 6a batteries plus a genuine 5a battery and generally ill only use 2 batteries doing a full gutter clean out for the house, which is a big job with all the trees we have here. Definitely want some bigger batteries for if you are going to give the 18v a shot

  • Picked up a Ryobi 450CFM unit in kit for $379.

Good thing is that is has been registered so has a 6 year warranty. Definitely feel there is more air speed on the Stihl, I'd say around 20-25% more. Which is right 178kmh vs 276kmh (76 m/s). As it wouldn't lift some wet leaves, but a little kick got it going. With the boost on the Ryobi it's more seems fine for my domestic application. Thanks for the suggestion all, seems like a no brainer for the price and warranty. Much better than a marketplace second hand unit.
